    THEPUSH-FIT PEOPLE

WELCOMEI AM DELIGHTED TO WELCOME YOU TO THE FIRST ISSUE OF THE JG SPEEDFIT NEWSLETTER – ‘THE PUSH-FIT PEOPLE’.

    Whilst I struggle to comprehend

    that we are already trading

towards the final quarter of 2013

and that my thoughts are slowly

turning to the new business year

ahead, I start to reflect on what

    has been another very exciting

year for the JG Speedfit team so far.

Despite the challenging market conditions we have

continued to grow our business and market share,

which is a real credit not only to our entire team,

but also to our extremely loyal customers who

have continued to put their faith in our products

    and services.

Following huge levels of customer demand over

many years, 2012 was the launch year of our

JG Layflat® Pipe range. During 2013 we have

experienced an incredible level of demand, which

at times has been challenging - par ticularly from a

    production perspective.

Being a private, family owned company we don’t

have to answer to shareholders, corporate

management or wade through the layers of

hierarchical pyramids. As a result, when the decision

was made to launch the product we were able

to mobilise the capital investment and resource

to give our loyal and potential new customers a

product they had requested for a number of years.

JG Layflat® pipe has been an incredible catalyst for

exponential growth this year impacting on pipe,

    fittings and Underfloor Heating sales.

Our outlook for the rest of 2013 remains positive and

we are well placed to continue driving sales across our

pipe, fittings and Underfloor Heating business whilst

continuing to identify new product opportunities and

    improving our overall service.

It is my hope that you will enjoy reading the first

of many issues of ‘The Push-fit People’ and we look

forward to keeping you connected with all things JG

    Speedfit during future editions.

  • FLAT OUTWe are proud of a recent addition to our product range - JG Layflat® pipe, as it truly represents the company’s objective to provide cutting-edge plumbing and heating solutions that allow for swift, smooth and easy installations.

The JG Layflat® pipe simply lays flat, stays flat and is ultra flexible, allowing greater control and ease of movement making it possible for a single person to meander and route the pipe as they wish.

Transporting the JG Layflat® pipe is hassle-free in comparison to copper equivalents, requiring no ‘clumsy’ installation tool boxes, being very light to carry and compact enough to be loaded into a small space whilst moving from the shop to the construction site. Regardless of whether you are using a 25m or a 150m JG Layflat® coil, the pipe is consistently easy to remove from the packaging.

Once installed, JG Layflat® pipe proves to save energy due to the specific thermal conductivity properties of plastic, allowing minimal heat loss, which makes it the perfect choice for any UFH system, especially when powered by condensing boilers, ground-source and air-source heat pumps.

Thanks to the inbuilt barrier layer, which prevents the ingress of air, as well as the smooth inner surface of JG Layflat® pipe, a permanent unrestricted flow through the system can be assured as no limescale or corrosion would build up within the lifetime of the product. That on its own offers significant efficiency as the power

needed to pump fluids throughout the circuit would not be expected to increase over time due to corrosion clogs.

The new JG Layflat® polybutylene pipe is the perfect component for most sustainable and energy efficient domestic heating technologies, while the ease of use, speed of installation and lifelong reliability of the product make it ideal for any plumbing project where precision and impeccable quality are paramount.

EQUIPPED WITH JG SPEEDFIT UNDERFLOOR HEATING, THE NEW ODDINGTON HANSE HAUS HOLDS TRULY OUTSTANDING ENERGY-SAVING PROPERTIES.The Oddington ProjectDesigned by Hanse Haus Ltd, the new-build Oddington

dwelling is defined by its high sustainability credentials

    and great aesthetic value.

The house is a four-bedroom, two-storey building with

total quadrature of 235.94m2. Given the size of the

property, choosing the right heating system is of crucial

    importance for ensuring efficiency.

The main source of heat for the Oddington Hanse

Haus is a ground-based heat pump, which as a concept

is gradually proving to be the renewable technology of

the future. The system is using a vapour compression

cycle, where pumps take low-grade warmth and

concentrates it to a higher temperature that is then

used to heat up the building.

Due to the low temperature flow at which the heat

pump operates, UFH is the ideal technology for

    distributing warmth throughout the house.

JG Speedfit’s Involvement Being the sole plumbing and heating contractor of

Hanse Haus for the UK, Synergy PHR has appointed

JG Speedfit as the exclusive supplier of the Underfloor

    Heating system installed.

Darren Farley, director of Synergy PHR commented -

“Since partnering with Hanse Haus in May 2012 Synergy

have carried out installations in seven properties in

the UK, all with full ground and first floor UFH by JG

Speedfit. We have used both staple and Overfit systems

that proved to be very easy to install, saving time and

effort. The cooperation with the push-fit people was

very satisfying from the initial contact with their sales

representative, through to CAD specification, delivery

and installation. On completion, the JG Speedfit

engineers and technical support were always there to

help with system setup, testing and control.”

JG Speedfit offered Synergy PHR comprehensive after-

sales support, assisting throughout all project stages

with a particular focus on pipe layout design and

    installation advice.

The Advantages of the JG Speedfit UFH SystemThe technology behind the JG Speedfit UFH model

is similar to the philosophy behind the Hanse Haus

concept - innovation towards energy preservation and

efficiency, comfort, aesthetics and value for money.

The benefits of our UFH applications are numerous:

    – Operating at much lower temperatures compared

to conventional radiator circuits, the UFH system

helps reduce energy consumption, resulting in lower

    heating costs.

    – Installation is simple and requires no clumsy tools.

    – Even distribution of temperature is ensured as the

whole floor acts as a radiant heat source.

    – The circuit is unobtrusive and discreet, which gives

more freedom to interior design, allowing for additional

    spaces to be decorated accordingly.

    – The system makes use of multi-zoning, which

means that each room benefits from individual time

and temperature control. That flexibility alone brings

significant value for money as no ‘paid-for’ energy goes

    to waste.

    – The compatibility of the JG Speedfit UFH model

with other renewable heating technologies such as

condensing boilers, solar power and heat pumps makes

it the sustainable heating solution of the future.

  • ASK DAVE

    P12ISSUE 001 | OCTOBER 2013

    THEPUSH-FIT PEOPLE

    PUSH-FIT EXPERT

    Q) DO I NEED TO USE AN INSERT EVERY TIME I CONNECT YOUR SPEEDFIT PIPE TO A FITTING AND WHY ARE THERE TWO TYPES OF INSERT?

    A) Always use an insert when installing Speedfit pipe as it

gives the connection extra rigidity and support within the

insertion length. We have two types of insert - ‘Superseal

STS’ for plastic to plastic and our ‘Standard TSM’ inserts

that are mainly used for plastic pipe connections to

compression fittings. “Superseal STS” inserts have an

extra ‘O’-ring on the head of the insert and also one

on the body of the insert which goes inside the pipe -

to provide an even greater sealing protection. The ‘TSM

Standard’ insert has a shallow head that allows more of

the pipe length into the fitting. This means that when

joining with a compression fitting or another make of

push-fit connector there is sufficient pipe past the olive

or O-ring that ensures a strong connection.

    Q) IS IT POSSIBLE TO CONNECT SPEEDFIT PIPE WITH OTHER MAKES OF PUSH-FIT PLUMBING?

    A) Yes. Any plastic push-fit plumbing range that

adheres to BS7291 is compatible with JG Speedfit. It

is recommended that you should use the same make

of pipe insert as the pipe you are installing - this

    is because pipe internal diameters

    may be different. For best

    quality and highest reliability

    of the connection we advise

    using Speedfit pipes and

    Speedfit fittings together.

    Q) WHAT ARE THE MAXIMUM AND MINIMUM TEMPERATURES THAT SPEEDFIT PIPE AND FITTINGS WILL WORK AT?

    A) Fittings marked in the installation guide

as suitable for central heating are approved

    to 12 Bar at 20°C, 6 Bar at 65°C and 3

Bar at 105°C, but can withstand up to 114°C

intermittently for ver y short periods if there is

a boiler or heater malfunction. The minimum

temperature is 0°C, provided the water

being carried does not freeze. If there is

any danger of the pipe freezing it must

    be insulated to regulation standards.

    Q) CAN I CONNECT SPEEDFIT PIPE AND FITTINGS DIRECTLY TO A CENTRAL HEATING BOILER?

    A) No, although most modern

    boilers have a high

    limit thermostat,

residual heat can be conducted from

    the heat exchanger. Therefore, we

recommend a minimum of one metre

from the boiler casing should be run

in copper pipe, unless otherwise stated

    in the boiler manufacturer’s installation

literature. This includes all connections to

    the boiler.

    Q) DO I NEED TO INSULATE SPEEDFIT PLUMBING?

    A) The insulation requirements for Speedfit pipe and

fittings are the same as those for copper and should

comply with BS6700 and BS5422. If there is a danger

that pipes and fittings might freeze, that there may be

excessive heat loss or if the installation is outside of the

thermal envelope of the building it must be insulated.

    Q) CAN I CONNECT A STEM ELBOW OR REDUCER DIRECTLY INTO A COMPRESSION FITTING AND DOES IT NEED AN INSERT?

    A) Yes it is possible to connect a stem elbow or

stem reducer into a compression fitting. You will

need to use a copper olive in the compression

fitting instead of a brass one as the compression

nut needs to be tightened more firmly. No need

to fit an insert into the stem fitting as stems

are manufactured compatible with push-fit and

compression fittings. To make a permanent water

tight connection push the stem hard into the tube stop

of the compression fitting, then tighten the compression

nut until the copper olive is gripping the stem tight enough

to prevent you from twisting it in the fitting and finally

tighten the compression nut once more with a full turn.

Remember - many but not all compression fittings

are suitable for use with plastic fittings and pipe.

Compression fittings with short tube stop depth or

brass olives should not be used with plastic fittings

    or pipe.

    PUSH-FIT IN THE COMMUNITYPUSH-FIT SUPPORT

PUSH-FIT IN THE COMMUNITYINTRODUCTIONAs a family owned company we endeavor to project our values of empowerment, integrity and business ethics onto our involvement in the community. With a strong sense of corporate and social responsibility, we attempt to support numerous philanthropic and charity activities within our reach and beyond.

Over the years John Guest has financially supported and continues to aid initiatives and institutions such as the Thames Hospicecare - taking care of people living with life-limiting illnesses; the Harlington Hospice - providing holistic treatment for patients with lethal diseases; the Com Café - a project supporting vulnerable families within the local community by health & wellbeing seminars and workshops; the Bell Farm Christian Centre - providing meals and social activities for elderly people in difficult situations.

With our extensive international reach we are happy to be involved with social causes outside of the UK such as the construction of a new hospital in Kalene, Zambia and the development of a new water purification technology intended for areas deprived of potable water.

    HOSPITALIN ZAMBIA

    WATERFOR ALL

Our goal is to reach out and

    touch people’s lives despite any

borders and with that in mind we

are happy to announce the recent

    opening of a new operating

    theatre block at the mission

    hospital in Kalene, Zambia.

The new addition to the hospital

was built with donations by John

Guest and other third parties, as

    the Zambian Government has no

    financial commitment to the project.

Thanks to the extended capacity of

the new facility more patients could

    receive life saving treatment quicker.

    Also the new hospital addition

    allows for major operation and

    caesarean section procedures to

be performed at the same time in a

    highly sterile and safe environment.

    Designed to offer potable water

    to people in disadvantaged third

world areas, the new ‘village pump’

    is a manually operated filtration

    technology with the capacity to

produce up to 500 litres of crystal

    clear water per hour.

    Developed by our John Guest

    Engineering department and Dutch

    inventor Rob van Osdorp, the

    new water purification concept

    transforms contaminated water,

    filtering out viruses and bacteria,

    which could help prevent the

    spread of cholera, hepatitis and

    other endemic diseases in high-risk

    areas such as Africa.

    The final pump has now

    been launched and aimed

    at environmentally engaged

    companies to donate to deprived

villages around the world with no

Not everyone is an expert in Underfloor Heating

and for that reason we introduced a set of UFH

video tutorials to help plumbing professionals better

understand the technical and installation details behind

    the UFH system.

The videos are easy to follow self-explanatory

guides that can give confidence to even a first time

Underfloor Heating installer. Each video features a

professional demonstrating how the JG system is put

together in a step-by-step manner. Along with a best

practice explanation of each JG pipe fixing system, a full

breakdown is also provided on how best to prepare the

floor, how to connect the manifold with the pipework

as well as tips on how to test the system once installed.

These videos will fully complement our Speedfit

Support campaign, which aims to inform our

contractors of the complete Underfloor Heating

technical support package offered by the company. The

videos are available on our website -

    PUSH-FIT CONTACTSPUSH-FIT BEHIND THE SCENES

BEHIND THE SCENES OF A BRITISH MANUFACTURER

With significant focus on product excellence, we take

pride in the high manufacturing standards we have

established after many decades of refinement. The

entire journey of our products from the initial concept,

through to tool design, manufacture and testing has

been fully undertaken by John Guest and carried

out entirely in the UK. Each fitting that comes off the

production line has undergone numerous quality tests

    throughout the whole production cycle.

Since this is the first issue of The Push-fit People it

is important to provide some insight into what the

manufacturing of our world-class products entails.

Tony Adams, one of John Guest Head Office’s Moulding

Managers at the West Drayton site, takes us through

the initial stages of producing the iconic push-fit fitting:

“As we have adopted a very strategic approach of

undertaking every step of the supply chain ourselves,

we can exercise total control over our planning and

testing production stages. That allows us to establish an

extremely low defect ratio, which means that only a

very tiny fraction of the millions of fittings manufactured

do not pass our quality tests before we send out to

the marketplace. For the purpose of reducing the

reoccurrence of faults, procedures are instigated to

control non-conforming products with an emphasis on

identifying what caused the problem and implementing

    a corrective action.”

From the very start, John Guest keeps the entire

engineering process under its own umbrella. All fittings

are designed by JG engineers, all tools are made by JG

toolmakers, and all plastic products are moulded by JG

moulding machines. When you see the JG logo on a

fitting, you can be sure that it is a genuine JG connector.

At John Guest we apply various measuring techniques

for the purpose of checking the dimensional stability

and surface finish standards of our products along

with visual checks to identify aesthetic moulding faults.

That allows us to be extra confident in the high quality

standards we have established and continue to offer

    manufacturing excellence.”
