    more, Maryland, in 1977.

    [11]

In 1985, MacArthur became the president of The Mas-ters College(formerly Los Angeles Baptist College), an

in the summer.[1] In 2015, the MacArthur New Testa-ment Commentary series was completed.[16] MacArthuris married to Patricia and they have four children and fif-teen grandchildren.

    2.1 Young-Earth Creationism

MacArthur advocates young-earth creationism in his

book, The Battle For the Beginning (2001), and inhis sermons.[17] Speaking aboutevolutionary theory, hewrites that Christians ought to expose such lies for whatthey are and oppose them vigorously. He argues that 'thebattle for the beginning is ultimately a battle between twomutually exclusive faiths - faith in Scripture versus faith inanti-theistic hypotheses. It is not really a battle betweenscience and the Bible.'[18]

    2.2 Eschatology

MacArthur is a premillenialist and pre-tribulationist in re-gards to the timing of theRaptureand otherEnd timeoc-currences, and stated, I'm committed to the fact that Je-sus will come to set up a literal earthly kingdom and thatHe will come seven years before the kingdom, He willcome prior to the tribulation. [19] However, MacArthurhas tried to distance himself from others within the line ofthought, such asminister Tim LaHayeandnovelist JerryB. Jenkinsof fame for theLeft Behindseries. MacArthurremarked during a sermon, "...somebody out there isgoing to say, Oh boy, hes in to the Left Behind se-ries. NoI'm not in to Rapture-fiction and I'm not into wacky charts. You don't see me up here with a big

chart and a stick. And I'm not in to newspaper exe-gesis where...everything that happens in the news ful-fills some obscureOld Testamentprophecy...I reject the

    2 2 THEOLOGICAL VIEWS

wacky world of newspaper exegesis and cartoon eschatol-ogy and crazy interpretation like the locusts of Revelation9 being helicopters...[20]

    2.3 Law and Covenant

MacArthur describes himself as a leakydispensationalist.[21] While he holds to a premillennialand pre-tribulational rapture of the church and fulfill-ment of all the covenant promises made to the Jewsat the end of the tribulation, he rejects some of theclassic dispensational ideas, such as the Law having noapplication to the church. MacArthur stated, I'm notin to all that is traditionally known as dispensationalism, seven dispensations, two kingdoms, two New Covenants, two ways of salvation, discontinuity between the OldTestament and the New.[22]

    2.4 Soteriology

MacArthur was a key person in the Lordship salvationcontroversyin the 1980s, arguing againstFree Grace the-ology. He states, you must receive Jesus Christ for whoHe is, both Lord and Savior, to be truly saved (II Pe-ter 2:20).[23] Regardingeternal security, he states, Itshould never be presented merely as a matter of beingonce saved, always saved--with no regard for what youbelieve or do. The writer of Hebrews 12:14 states franklythat only those who continue living holy lives will en-ter the Lords presence. MacArthurs views raised con-troversy within American Evangelicalism and were chal-lenged in print by non-lordship dispensationalist theolo-gians, Charles RyrieandZane C. Hodges, who arguedthat MacArthur was teaching a form of works-based sal-vation. MacArthur has denied their conclusion due to thedisagreement over the nature of Christs Lordship in re-lationship to Salvation.

In December 1989, theBible Broadcasting Networkter-minated MacArthurs Grace to You program. In ex-plaining that step, BBN president Lowell Davey referredto MacArthurs teachings on the blood of Christ, andLordship Salvation. Davey called these teachings con-fusing. In a letter dated January 15, 1990, Davey citeda, "....drift by Dr. MacArthur to a theological positionthat we could not adhere to, and said that MacArthurssermon series on the theology of election "....convincedus that the direction of 'Grace to You' was toward Hyper-Calvinism.... MacArthur preaches Salvation by elec-tion of Gods sovereignty.[24] However, the term Hyper-Calvinism is used by some to denote 5-point Calvin-ism or even any strong defense of Calvinism, rather thanthe historical Hyper-Calvinism position that only the"Elect" may be offered theGospel(compare with the his-

torical teaching of all Protestant denominations, includ-ing MacArthur, of the free offer of the gospel). Thisposition does not seem to accurately reflect MacArthurs

position in his sermons. The controversy concerning theefficacy of the Christs blood stems from MacArthursstatement that it is not the literal liquid blood of Christthat saves, but his sacrificial death onThe Cross, a viewthat he espoused in an article titled, Not His Bleed-ing, but His Dying, published in the May 1976 issue

of the Grace to You family paper that is distributed tohis church. MacArthur himself, though, later clarifiedwhat was stated of him in the article, noting his posi-tion concerning Christs blood and death in atonement, mentioning that the efficacy of Christs blood is not someparticular physical property of the blood itself, but thefact that He shed blood in dying, and his affirmation thatChrists blood in death was necessary to satisfyGods holyrequirement for atonement.[25]

    2.5 Christology

In 1983, MacArthur first published his belief in the doc-trine of "incarnational sonship. In 1989, after some crit-icism, he defended his views in a plenary session ofthe annual convention of the Independent FundamentalChurches of America. In an article on MacArthurs website Grace to You entitled Reexamining the Eternal Son-ship of Christ, he retraces his views from 1983 onward, concluding, I want to state publicly that I have aban-doned the doctrine of 'incarnational sonship.' Carefulstudy and reflection have brought me to understand thatScripture does indeed present the relationship betweenGod the Father and Christ the Son as an eternal Father-

Son relationship. I no longer regard Christs sonship as arole He assumed in His incarnation.[26]

    2.6 Cessationism

MacArthur is a cessationist, and isoneof the mostpromi-nent voices in the church against the continuationistbe-liefs ofPentecostalismand the Charismatic Movement. He has written three books in support of his position:The Charismatics(1978),Charismatic Chaos(1993), andStrange Fire: The Danger of Offending the Holy Spirit

with Counterfeit Worship (2013). In October 2013,MacArthur hosted a conference called Strange Fire athis church, to mark the launch of his book of the samename. The event featured a number of speakers who ar-gued for a cessationist theology and strongly critiquedthe Charismatic Movement.[27] In his opening remarks,MacArthur stated, Watching the behavior of some Hin-dus who belong to the Kundalini cult. Their body move-ments are almost identical to that of people in the charis-matic movement, the extreme behavior of pagans. This isthe work of Satan, it is the work of darkness, and not to beattributed to the Holy Spirit. And that, The Charismaticmovement as such has made no contribution to biblical

clarity, interpretation, or sound doctrine..It detracts andconfuses. It has only produced distortion, confusion, and error. Have people truly been saved in Charismatic

churches? Yes. But nothing coming from that movementhas been the reason they were saved. Evangelicalismhas thrown its arms open and has welcomed the Trojanhorse of the charismatic movement into the city of God.Its troops have taken over and placed an idol in the cityof God.[28]

He broadly calls modern visions, revelations, voicesfrom heaven...dreams, speaking in tongues, prophecies,out-of-body experiences, trip to heaven, anointings, mir-acles all false, all lies, all deceptions attributed falselyto the Holy Spirit. And that The Charismatic movementhas stolen the Holy Spirit and created a golden calf, andtheyre dancing around the golden calf as if it were theHoly Spirit.[29][30] He has made a list of Gifts of theSpirit, mostly from 1 Cor. 12-14, but holds that oncethe New Testament was finished, those sign gifts ceasedto have a function, and ended with the conclusion of theApostolic Age, around 100 AD.[31]

In a subsequent teaching, What has happened after the'Strange Fire' Conference (2013), MacArthur allowedthat within the Charismatic movement there were thosewho believed in the authority of Scripture, honored theLord, and pursued Godly living, and that the movementretained enough gospel truth so that souls could be savedwithin it. However, he saw its interdenominational pres-ence as being a testimony to the absence of any theol-ogy, and charged that its theology is both heterodox andheretical...everything is defined by experience..and there-fore has a weak view of Scripture, thats the charismaticmovement. He further criticized the modern Charis-

matic movement, stating that In 1967 a bunch of Jesusfreak people in the beach areas of Southern Californiago to Calvary Chapel..and for the first time, the church, that i know of in history, the church lets the very definedsubculture dictate what it will be. Out go the ties, out gothe hymns, out go all the normal and formal things...andthe hippie culture, you know, kids coming out of drugs, communal living, free sex, and all that kind of casualthing, and thats a charismatic church, thats a four-squarechurch...Thats where the movement becomes what weknow as Calvary Chapel. The first Calvary Chapel wasessentially the church saying we'll let the culture tell us

what we need to be...The charismatic movement has de-veloped...its comfortable in Roman Catholicism, its com-fortable in dead denominationalism...I thinks its a falseform of Christianity. [32] In the past (1991) however,MacArthur commended Chuck Smith (1927 2013),founder of the Calvary Chapel movement, for writinga straight forward critique of charismatic extremism, and stated that there are many like him who have takentheir stand and I thank God for their courage and theirdesire to be Biblical.[33] In response to MacArthursStrange Fire conference, Calvary Chapel expresses afundamental disagreement with MacArthurs understand-ing of spiritual gifts among Gods people today, but af-

firms charisma, not charismania, and commends ChuckSmiths book Charisma versus Charismania as being

one of the best short, popular works on the subject.[34]

Three books have been written in response to the StrangeFire book and conference, arguing for thecontinuationistposition: Authentic Fire: A Response to John MacArthursStrange FirebyMichael Brown; Holy Fire: A Balanced,

Biblical Look at the Holy Spirits Work in Our LivesbyR.T. Kendall and The Essential Guide to the Power ofthe Holy Spirit: Gods Miraculous Gifts At Work Today

by Dr. Randy Clark. Addressing the Strange Fireconference, continuationistCalvinist Baptist John Piperconcurs that there are many abuses in the charismaticchurch, however he adds that we really need to keep inmind that every charismatic abuse has its mirror image innon-charismatic abuses...In some of these cases, the non-charismatic church is more guilty than the charismatic, such as, the absence of emotion, which is probably moredeadly than the excesses.[35]

    2.7 Complementarianism

MacArthur takes a complementarian biblical view ongender roles as opposed to the feminist view and consid-ers that the Bible does not allow women to teach menor exercise authority in churches. He therefore believesthat the roles of elder and pastorare restricted to menonly.[36][37][38]

    2.8 Psychology

He is also an advocate ofNouthetic Counseling, whichstresses the Bible as a sufficient tool for counseling peo-ple with mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety.MacArthur does not reject all forms of psychological the-ories and techniques, though he considers some psychol-ogy andpsychiatryas contrary to the Bible.[39]

MacArthur has argued that True psychology (i.e. thestudy of the soul) can be done only by Christians, sinceonly Christians have the resources for understanding andtransforming the soul. The secular discipline of psychol-

ogy is based on godless assumptions and evolutionaryfoundations and is capable of dealing with people onlysuperficially and only on the temporal level... Psychol-ogy is no more a science than the atheistic evolutionarytheory upon which it is based. Like theistic evolution,Christian psychologyis an attempt to harmonize two in-herently contradictory systems of thought. Modern psy-chology and the Bible cannot be blended without seriouscompromise to or utter abandonment of the principle ofScriptures sufficiency.... "[40]

His stance has caused several controversies, the most no-table of which was the first time an employee of an evan-

gelical church had ever been sued for malpractice. Thecase failed to come to trial because a judge ruled the caseas having insufficient evidence.[41][42][43][44]

2.9 Other Christian movements and other

    religions

His writings disapprove of other modern Christian move-ments and ministers such as those who run seeker-friendly church services such as Robert Schuller, Bill

    Hybels, andRick Warren.[45]

He has criticized popular Word of Faith pastor Joel Os-teen, whom he has spoken of as a quasi-pantheist.[46] Hedisagrees withBilly Graham, who in an interview withRobert Schuller in the hour of prayer program stated thatSalvation is open to all people whether they believe in Je-sus or not.[47]

In May 2002, in the midst of significant media and publicattention focused on Catholic sex abuse cases, MacArthurgave a message highly critical of the entire system ofthe Roman Catholic priesthood.[48] MacArthur has re-

ferred to Catholicism in as the Kingdom of Satan,[49]

and holds to the confession that thepopeis anti-christ,[50]

but which he said applies to anyone who positions him-self against or in place of Christ.[51]

MacArthur unequivocally states that a person who trulybelieves what Roman Catholicism teaches is not saved be-cause the Roman Catholic way of salvation is works basedand is a twisted system of satanic lies presided over bythe Pope.[52] In addition he stated that the theology ofIslam is false.[53]
