How to lead a global alliance of 400 companies and not lose your hair…
2
So, Who Wants to Take on the World?• Leading a global community to evolve rapidly and stay
relevant• How a few individuals took on the challenge (and risk) to
• Herd cats• Play politics• Travel the globe• Influence the world, the IoT and the industry for years to come
• Light the fuse….. • And see what happens (catastrophic failure or… something amazing)
• This is a story of leadership of a global community that is evolving

Our modern existence depends on many things we take for granted.
Cars run on gas from any gas station, the plugs for electrical devices fit into any socket, and smartphones connect to anything equipped with Wi-Fi or BT.
All of these conveniences depend on standards, the silent and often forgotten foundations for choice, interoperability, mass markets and scale economy.
Life gets a lot easier when anybody can plug in to any system.
4
Trends in Connectivity -Overcoming fragmentationFrom proprietary to standardized , to get rid of• Too many incompatible options• Lacking scale and support • Single vendor lock-in
From “anything goes” to managed choices, because• Too many standards with overlapping objectives• Costly bridges/gateways• Fragmented networks create niches,
prevent harmonized market/economy of scale• The market delays until winner appears
Needed: a small set of connectivity standardsthat can harmonize the market

Evolving• Sunset of Manufacturer Specific Protocols (MSP)• Consolidated profiles under one umbrella• Consolidated test processes and procedures• Ensured test houses were compliant• Modified our IPR policies• Updated our trademark and copyright rules – and enforcement• Creating relevant liaisons and partnerships (ie: Thread, IP, …)• Facilitating Industry Discussions (ie: HIVE)• Which drive new initiatives (Ie: all hubs, one data model, cloud & security)

Some application examplesAria Hotel City Center, Las Vegas:+ 100,000 Zigbee devices
GM Spring Hill Plant: 28,773 connected lights, 20 million square feet

• Zigbee Smart Energy is the world’s leading standard for interoperable products that monitors, controls, informs and automates the delivery and use of energy and water. This information enables homeowners to save money, create comfortable living environments, and reduce their emissions footprint
• This technology functions on lower frequencies for devices used in new buildings where thickness and composition of materials can interrupt signals between devices.
• All Zigbee Smart Energy products are Zigbee Certified to perform regardless of manufacturer, allowing utilities and consumers to purchase with confidence.
• Zigbee Alliance member companies who have successfully deployed Zigbee Smart Energy products include BC Hydro, Honeywell, Itron, Landys+Gyr, Pacific Gas & Electric and Smart Meter Texas.

Technology Update• A new Certification program for Zigbee Smart Energy 1.4 opened in Q2 2018.• Simultaneous operation on sub-GHz and 2.4 GHz bands enhances the overall Smart Energy Application
Standard offering. Benefits to Certification with the Smart Energy Application Standard include: • Intelligent energy management • Smart energy metering• Increased savings for utilities and consumers• Competitive marketplace of multi-vendors• Reduction of emissions footprint• Low-energy housing• Smart urban networks
• The latest deployment is in the United Kingdom, rolling out to 30 million homes (110 million nodes) by 2020 with an estimated $15 billion expected in net benefits based on consumer energy savings and lower energy generation demand.
