Vegas Club, the Western, the Gold Spike,

the Union Plaza, and more. But Jackie’s

pride and joy was the El Cortez. Jackie

bought the El Cortez in 1963, and ran it

until selling it to the current owners in

2008. Even after the sale, Jackie lived at

the El Cortez, often playing in the poker

room. He was the face of the El Cortez,

and a friendly face at that.

Jackie loved the El Cortez because he

loved Downtown. As longtime friend

(and one-time employee) Steve Wynn

said, Jackie “took care of this city and

the people in it.” He was always shaking

hands and meeting people. He liked to

stay in the mix, always looking for the

next improvement, the next big thing in

gaming. When other casinos were closing

shop and heading for the hills, Jackie and

the El Cortez stayed open, stayed proud,

and stayed Downtown. And they were

both more successful for it.

Jackie Gaughan was an entrepreneur, a

gaming pioneer, a visionary, and a friend.

He helped create the Vegas we know

and love today. When the focus started

to shift to the glitz and glamour of the

Strip, Jackie stayed Downtown, keeping

the heart of the real Vegas beating.

Anyone who has been a part of this city

throughout the years has a Jackie story,

and they tell it with a smile on their face.

This year, Las Vegas lost a legend.

Jackie was born in Omaha, Nebraska. He

served in World War II, once stationed

at Nellis (then called Las Vegas Air

Force Base), a foreshadowing to the city

he would make his home. Jackie’s first

exposure to the gaming industry was

back in Omaha, but in 1950 he found his

way to the gaming capital of the world,

Las Vegas, where he bought a stake in the

Flamingo. Over the years he would own

part or all of the Boulder Club, the Las

Jackie was a gaming pioneer, and helped

shape Vegas. From large-scale casino

ownership and land development to

things as seemingly small as creating the

first casino coupon voucher book and

strategic slot placement, Jackie just had

a mind for this industry. His mentoring,

advice, and charisma helped influence

Vegas icons from Steve Wynn to the

Binions and everyone in-between. Even

Warren Buffet has a story about how

Jackie helped him. That’s who Jackie

was. Kind, honest, and always willing to

lend a helping hand.

Jackie put his heart and soul into the

El Cortez, and as longtime friend and

partner Kenny Epstein said, “his vision

for the gaming industry and his presence

as a beloved member of the El Cortez

family will be felt for years to come.”

Goodbye, Jackie. You’ll be missed.
