His most famous work, the illustrationso the first of eight volumes of Blandomtar och Troll (Among Gnomes androlls), a collection of fary tales written
y Swedish authors, was published in907. It was hugely successful. In thearly volumes, the illustrations wererinted in grey tones only, sometimes
with yellow color added. In the laterolumes we find the famous examplesf his mature work: Princess tuvstarrnd Skutt the moose against thewilight sky. In the later volumes, his
lustrations were printed in color.

ourney, she finds herself naked, robbedf her fine white gown. The elk watchesver her vulnerable naked body as sheleeps under the stars at night. Heecomes anxious, worried that histrength and wisdom will not beufficient to protect the little princess.
He seems to want to move on, and
ends down to let the princess climb onis back. Then they are gone in a rush,alloping east. He hardly hears whenhe calls to him, and rarely answers. Asf in a fever he breaks through theangled forest at a furious rate. 'Wherere we going?' asks Princess
Cottongrass. 'To the pool,' is thenswer. 'Deep in the forest is a pool,

Many years have passed. Still PrincessCottongrass sits and looks wonderinglynto the water for her heart. She is noonger a little girl. Instead, a slenderlant, crowned with white cotton,tands leaning over the edge of the
ool. Now and then the elk returns,tops, and looks at it tenderly. Only henows that this is the princess from
Dream Castle. Perhaps she nods andmiles, for he is an old friend, but sheoes not want to follow him back; sheannot follow any more, as long as shes under the spell. The spell lies in theool. Far, far under the water lies a lost
eart."
