A Secret Conversation John 3:1-17 Do you ever wonder how many people talked to Jesus that we don't even know about? Do you think there were very many of them? Some of their stories are in the Bible, but some are not. One man came to talk to Jesus late at night, so no one would see him. But his story IS in the Bible. His name was Nicodemus. Why do you think Nicodemus came at night? Maybe he wanted their conversation to be private. Or maybe he was afraid of what people would think if they saw him talking to Jesus. Jesus wasn't exactly a normal teacher in the temple, was he? Anyway, their conversation wasn't exactly normal, either. Nicodemus wanted to know a little bit more about how Jesus could do the amazing things that he did. He figured that Jesus must be sent by God. And Jesus said something to Nicodemus that confused him a lot. Jesus told him that he'd never be able to understand things about God and God's realm* if he wasn't "born again." (Some Bibles say, "born from above.”) Hmm. Can you imagine the look on Nicodemus's face? Do you think he looked surprised? Or confused? How, in the world, can anyone do that? Nicodemus asked Jesus, "Are you supposed to get back in your mom's tummy and be born again?" Yikes! No one's mom would like that idea! But that's not what Jesus meant. And so he explained it to Nicodemus: Jesus wants us to let God's Spirit come into our lives. It's as if it washes over us and makes us all new and ready to live new lives as Children of God; ready to live the way God wants us to live. And when we do that, we can talk to God differently and live with God differently and see God differently. Maybe just because we're ready to listen to God if God talks to us. Are you ready? Can you feel God's Spirit blowing around you and in you? Listen. God might be talking to YOU! *“God’s realm” is how God wants all of us and all of God’s creation to be.
