When Jesus died, many people were VERY sad. His mom, his friends, and all the people he had taught about God and God’s love were sad and confused. They didn’t know what to do without him. Some of his friends were so afraid that they locked themselves in a room. But, one of his friends, Mary Magdalene, went to the tomb to be near Jesus’s body. Do you know what happened when she got there? Mary got a big surprise and a bit of a scare. In those days, in that part of the world, tombs were carved into the hillsides. After Jesus’s body was placed in his tomb, his friend Joseph rolled a large stone in front of the door to close it. And Pilate, the governor, had the stone doorway all sealed shut so no one would ever be able to open it again. But, when Mary got there, the stone had been rolled away. She was so surprised that she raced back to the room where the disciples were hiding. She told Peter and John what she had seen and they all raced back to the tomb. Peter and John went into the tomb to look for Jesus, but all they found were the pieces of cloth that had been wrapped around Jesus’s body. After that, they went back home. But Mary was very upset and she stood outside the tomb, in the garden, crying. She thought someone had stolen Jesus’s body. She bent down and peaked inside the tomb. And there she saw two angels sitting where Jesus’s body had been. They asked her why she was crying and she told them what had happened. As soon as she had finished saying this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there. But... She didn’t recognize him. She thought he was the gardener. When he asked her why she was crying, she asked him to tell her where Jesus’s body was. What do you think Jesus thought about that? Jesus said, “Mary!” And in that instant she knew exactly who he was. She said, “Rabbouni!” (That means “teacher” in Hebrew.) What do you think Mary did after she talked with Jesus? What would you do? Mary went to tell the disciples that she had seen Jesus. Can you imagine what she said when she walked in the door? “Jesus is alive! Hallelujah!” Click here for a full coloring page of Mary and Jesus. John 20:1-18 A Very Special Surprise Single use permission granted in homes and churches © 2014 Tamalyn L.
