St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office searching for missing St. Bernard man

St. Bernard Schools Seeking Passionate, Driven Teachers

The St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s help find-ing a 29-year-old St. Bernard man who has been missing since Jan. 31, Sheriff James Pohlmann said.

Tony Nunez Jr. left his home in the 1900 block of Joseph Drive in St. Bernard community on the evening of Jan. 31, and has not re-turned home or been heard from since.

Nunez is a white male with brown hair and brown eyes. He is 5’8” tall and weighs 180 lbs. He has two cherub tattoos on his up-per chest.

Nunez was last seen wearing a dark blue short sleeve shirt and dark blue long pants. He drives a black 2018 Chevrolet Spark.

Anyone with information regard-ing the whereabouts of Nunez is asked to contact the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office at (504) 271-2501.

The St. Bernard Parish School District has recently released the Program Application for Teach St. Bernard – an alternative certifi-cation program for recent college graduates and career changers looking to teach in high-needs subjects in the school district. Unlike traditional teacher licensure programs, Teach St. Bernard provides a path to becoming a teacher in the district through a high quality, no out-of-pocket cost program making it easier for candidates to make an impact while making an income.

Acceptance to the program is highly selective and based on the school district’s vacancies and need. To apply to the program, candidates must be college graduates who hold a bachelor's de-

gree from an accredited institution with a minimum undergraduate G.P.A. of 2.5 or higher as evidenced by an official transcript, and candidates must have passing scores on PRAXIS I (or equivalent ACT/SAT score) and PRAXIS II (content knowledge) for the desig-nated area in which the teacher will be teaching.

Candidates need to be interested in teaching one of the follow-ing: Secondary Math, Science, English, Business, or Special Edu-cation; Elementary Special Education.

Program Applications are due March 1, 2019. To learn more about this program and complete an application please visit www.sbpsb.org/teachSB.

Lottery Drawings Produce $10.4 Million in Winnings in January

Securing the Border Means Saving LivesI recently received a call from a mother of a fire chief in south Lou-

isiana, Spencer Chauvin. Spencer Chauvin was responding to a call as fire chief in St. John the Baptist Parish. As he was responding to that call he was killed by someone who is in this country illegally. He never got to go home that night to his wife and children, a six-year-old and eight-year-old, and he doesn’t get to talk to his mother anymore. I spoke on the House floor this week to honor his life and stress the human toll of open borders. This is why we must secure the border.

Visit https://bit.ly/2Gm9aUh to watch the full speech.Standing Against Anti-SemitismI am alarmed by incidents of anti-Semitism across the country,

including a growing incidence of anti-Semitic rhetoric and associ-ation with anti-Semitic leaders from some Democrat Members of Congress. We cannot pretend this is a thing of the past; anti-Semit-ic incidents are on the rise, including the shooting at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh and the vandalism of a synagogue in St.

Tammany Parish last September. The American people look to their leaders to take a stand. Like the House of Representatives recently condemned the hateful ideology of white supremacy, we must also condemn anti-Semitism. I have joined with my colleague Rep. Lee Zeldin of New York on a resolution to condemn this hate. Hate in all its forms is wrong, and we as leaders need to stand up against hate and bigotry. Speaker Pelosi should immediately schedule a vote to pass this resolution on the House floor.

Fighting to Improve Flood Control in St. Tammany ParishSt. Tammany Parish President Pat Brister visited the Capitol this

week. We had a productive meeting on how we can work together to improve flood control on the Northshore.

Working with Louisiana ShrimpersI sat down with members of the Louisiana Shrimp Association to

discuss how we can improve even further Louisiana's strong repu-tation for producing the highest quality shrimp.

It is an honor to represent you in Congress. For more information please visit my website, Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook pages.

THE SCALISE CAPITOL REPORT

Placing a down payment on a home and purchasing a new vehicle were just a few of the plans Louisiana Lottery players had for some of the nearly $11.4 million in scratch-off cash prizes claimed in January. The Lottery also reported more than $10.4 million won during drawings held in January.

January’s draw-style game winnings included one Powerball with Power Play match-4 + PB prize of $150,000; one Powerball with Power Play match-4 + PB prize of $100,000; and 47 Powerball match-4 prizes totaling $4,700. There was also one Mega Millions with Megaplier match-4 + MB prize of $30,000; two Mega Millions match-4 + MB prizes totaling $20,000 and 16 Mega Millions match-4 priz-es totaling $8,000. One player won a Lotto jackpot prize worth $800,000 and 88 players won Lotto match-5 prizes totaling $213,404, helping to bring Lotto’s monthly total winnings to $1,418,274. Pick 3 winning tickets totaled $3,185,160 and Pick 4 winning tickets to-taled $4,005,200.

Two players won Easy 5 jackpot prizes totaling $173,190, which brought the game’s monthly total winnings to $320,274 with an ad-ditional $126,067 won on ezmatch, an instant-win option available for an additional $1.

“About 28,000 Power Play purchasers won an extra $429,529 in addition to their regular Powerball prizes,” Lottery President Rose Hudson said. “Over 22,000 Megaplier purchasers won a bonus total of $207,198 in addition to their regular Mega Millions prizes.” The $1 Power Play option offers Powerball players the chance to increase any nonjackpot winnings. The $1 Megaplier add-on multiplies nonjackpot Mega Millions prizes by a multiplier number selected during the drawing.

In total, draw-style game winnings from drawings held in January were $10,446,868. Lottery draw-style game players have 180 days from the date of the drawing to claim the winnings from those tick-ets.

“We encourage players to sign the back of their tickets immedi-ately after purchasing and to check them promptly after the draw-ing. Even if a ticket does not win the jackpot, it could have won another prize,” Hudson added.

In addition to $11,357,037 in scratch-off cash prizes paid during January, players also claimed $2,027,160 worth of free-ticket priz-es. According to Lottery policy, scratch-off games are closed when all top prizes are claimed, and scratch-off players have 90 days from the official game closure date to redeem a winning ticket. A list of current scratch-off games, prizes remaining and claim deadlines can be found on its website, www.louisianalottery.com/scratch-offs.

While actual game performance and the amount of prizes claimed will vary from month to month, the Lottery allocates nearly 53.7 percent of sales to fund prizes. At least 35 percent of sales is transferred to the state treasury for the Minimum Foundation Pro-gram that funds K-12 public education in Louisiana. Retailers are paid 5.6 percent compensation, and the Lottery retains less than 6 percent of sales to operate.

Hudson reminded ticket purchasers to play responsibly, encour-aging anyone who has a gambling problem, or friends and family of anyone with a gambling problem, to call toll-free 1-877-770-7867 for help. Ticket purchasers must be at least 21 years of age.

St. Bernard Port Board Member Receives Presidential Plaque And GavelEach January, the St. Bernard

Port, Harbor & Terminal Dis-trict’s Board of Commissioners presents its outgoing president with a Presidential Plaque and Gavel to show appreciation for their dedication and services rendered to the Board during the previous year.

The Board of Commissioners bestowed this token of appreci-ation upon Mr. Harold Anderson at its January meeting.

Installed as president in January, 2018, Anderson has served on the Board for the past 16 years, holding various posi-tions, including president, vice president, secretary and trea-surer.

A native of St. Bernard Par-ish, Anderson has worked as an independent professional land-man in the oil and gas industry for more than 45 years. Serving

on the Port’s Board of Commis-sioners is his way of giving back to his community, he said.

“To be president of any asso-ciation is an accomplishment, but I’m especially proud to be president of the Port’s Board of Commissioners,” Anderson said. “I’m dedicated to anything that benefits St. Bernard Par-ish.”

Members of the Board of Commissioners are unpaid vol-unteers who meet on a regular basis to vote on Port contracts, agreements and policies.

Drew Heaphy, the Port’s exec-utive director, said Board mem-bers play a vital role in the Port’s operations – which include mul-tiple maritime facilities including Arabi, Chalmette and Violet Ter-minals/Industrial Parks, as well as Chalmette and Meraux Mid-Stream Mooring Facilities.

“Mr. Anderson has spent well over a decade serving on the Board of Commissioners, over-seeing and implementing many

advancements and improve-ments to the Port,” Heaphy said. “His services are greatly appreciated.”

The St. Bernard Port, Harbor &Terminal District’s Board of Commissioners recently presented its outgoing president, Harold Anderson, third from left, with a Presidential Plaque and Gavel for his dedicated service. With Anderson are, from left: Drew Heaphy, St. Bernard Port’s Executive Director; the Rev. Henry Ballard, Board of Commissioners Vice President; and Larry M. Aisola Jr. and Rachel L.
