Johannes Kepler key figure in the 17. century scientific revolution, was a German mathematician astronomer and astrologer.

He was born at the Free Imperial City of Weil

His father, Heinrich Kepler, earned a precarious living as a mercenary, and he left

the family when Johannes was five years old.

His mother Katherina was a healer and herbalist who was later tried

for witchcraft.

Kepler began his professional life as a teacher in the Protestant gymnasium at Graz, in

southern Austria. From here he rose to become an imperial courtier and achieved lasting fame

as an innovator in astronomy.

He compelled to leave Graz with other Protestants in 1598, he attached himself to the

court of Emperor Rudolf II (ruled 1576–1612) in Prague, and succeeded Tycho Brahe as

imperial mathematician in 1601.

Thus, in only three years, Kepler ascended from the position of a

provincial schoolteacher to become the astrological and astronomical adviser to the

most powerful monarch in the Christian world, although the emperor proved unreliable as a

source of financial support.
