Style and Concept Statement

Contemporary Modern Design Style

My design style is a contemporary modern fusion. This design style has elements of modern design like minimal, light weight furniture that leaves lots of relaxing space in the room. Contrast between clean, bright whites and darker browns and grays continue the modern style. Contemporary elements are introduced in the artwork and accents that temper the stark modern design with warm inviting textures. The color scheme of this design style is dominated by neutral, monochromatic colors accented by bold, dramatic colors. Clean lines of modern design are complemented with large, patterned art work that draws interest and creates rhythm. In a modern contemporary design, a sterile modern look is invigorated with unruly patterns and colorful accents.

Concept Statement

This space will be a perfect mix of cozy contemporary and modern minimalist designs. The main colors will be a neutral gray on the walls contrasted with a dark hard wood floor. A warm light gray creates a harmonious and welcoming atmosphere. The dark hardwood floors unify the space and create a solid background for a large, fluffy rug in a light gray. Since this room will be used for family gatherings and visiting with guests, plenty of seating is provided. Instead of large, cumbersome pieces, we will group smaller scale single pieces together, creating a nice rhythm while still allowing function and a spacious feel. The furniture continues the monochromatic color scheme with white and dark gray chairs and a white coffee table with clean, modern lines. To accent and invigorate the space, a bright red bean bag chair draws attention and offers a fun option for seating. Orange pillows stand out on the white chairs. Large, bold artwork on the wall in warm yellows and reds continues to liven this space and increase the inviting feel. The family’s built in white brick fire place adds another layer of warmth. For additional functionality, a desk in bright white with a dark leather chair will be near the entry. Finally, the beautiful city view from the front windows is emphasized by the split seating in front of the window and a clean, uninterrupted line of sight. Plants will tie this look together and finish the contemporary, modern feel.

Color Scheme

In this design, the color scheme is dominated by neutral monochromatic colors that start with a dark gray and end with bright white. The accent colors create a secondary three-color analogous scheme with red, red-orange and orange.

Furniture List

Three light scale chairs in white with smooth fabric with a textured finish. 33w 33d 30h. The dimensions of these chairs can vary slightly, but they cannot be too big or have a heavy look. Some pillows or a padded back.

Two individual chairs in black or dark gray, minimal design and smooth fabric, 33w 36d 38h. Width and depth can vary slightly, height needs to be exactly 38” to fill the space right.

Large bean bag chair in a warm bright color, or another oddly shaped chair in a bold color that is low to the floor and has soft lines.

Modern style desk in white, light design. 55w 26d 31h. A depth greater than 26 would take up too much space, width can be between 55 and 60.

Dark brown leather chair, light scale and minimal design. 17w 21d 34h Large rug in white or light gray, 236w 158d, or two 118w 79d rugs put together.

Minimal pattern, fluffy textured feel. Coffee table, white smooth finish, square with straight clean lines. Needs to be about

40d, at least 40w, but can vary. 3 Pillows in a warm, bold color, preferable orange. About 14x14. Art work, 1 very large piece in warm colors, red, orange or yellow. Contemporary or

abstract in design. 47h 47w for two pieces together, or 45-50h and 95-105 w. One smaller piece of art work, about 40w 30h, warm colors, abstract or contemporary. 2 medium scale plants, tall and thin, one small scale plant with interesting texture.

White Chairs(CH1 – 3 chairs)

We will use three of these chairs against the main wall in our room. The small scale will allow us to repeat the item and create a wonderful rhythm. They will be accented with colorful pillows and bold artwork.

Charcoal Chairs(Ch2 – 2 Chairs)

This chair will be right in front of the large window with a nice city view. Two of these chairs will frame the view nicely. The light weight scale of these chairs will leave lots of space and not take away from the valued view.

This colorful chair will bring a lively feel to our minimal design. The fuzzy finish will add a nice texture.

This desk is just the right size for our entry way. The minimal modern design and bright white color is perfect for this space.

This rug will add just the right amount of detail without taking anything away from the modern and spacious feel of the room. Because the rug is 8 x 10, two will be needed to complete the design.

This coffee table will be the perfect filler for our living room. It’ size is just right for our space and the modern design will fit nicely with our other elements.
