When the curtain goes up for The GypsyBaron you will view the culmination of efforts

of over 200 individuals. Since tryouts in mid-February the cast has been working a minimumof three nights per week in rehearsal. For vir

tually the same period of time the productionstaff has been busj' with the physical aspectsof transforming a bare stage into these threeenchanting scenes; plus turning engineers, teachers, accountants, students, salesmen, and house

wives into effectively made-up, costumed characters.

The local businesses advertising in our program assist financiallyin addition to making this program possible. We are indeed grateful for their interest in perj)etuating the educational and culturalexperiences which the Schenectady Light Opera Company affords.

Please note the information regarding our .scholarship audition.sin June, and encourage any talented young vocalist who has notpreviously won this award to apply. This is just one of the manyways in which contributions from our Special Members are utilized.

We hope that you enjoy our production this evening, and willplan now to attend our shows next sea.son — ̂lusic Man in N'ovem-ber Where's Charley in May.

THE GYPSY BARONStor^ and d^adt^round

Tlie Oupay Huron is a light operetta coiiecniing a hand of Tlomany Gypsies. C/.ipra. Queen of tlie Gypsy tribe, lias n dreuJii telling of the return fromexile of Saiidor Harinkay, son of their late leader. Feodore Barinkay. She andher grand<laughtcr. Saffi, relate thLs new.s to Zsupan, ISIayor of Zrinyi, andhis hou.senian. Otto.

C(nint Kare.ska, a eivil commissioner from Vienna. a(;companies Barinkayon hi.s return and conspires with Zsupan to promote the marriage of his flirtatious daughter Arietta to Barinkay. thereby gaining ])os.'Je.ssion of a treasure, known by Kare.ska to be concealed in the Barinkay e.statc.

Barinkay. however, falls in love with Saffi, and in spite of the efforts ofKareska. Arietta. Zsupan and his housekeeper, Mirabclla, he decides to takehis father's place and become the new Gypsy Baron. This pleases Otto immensely since he had already planned to marry Zsupan'.s daughter, Arietta.

Czipra defends the proposed marriage of Barinkay and Saffi and. at thesame time, reveals the whereabouts of the treasure and legal documents proving Salfi to be of royal lineage. The marriage is delayed when the governorof the province. Graf Peter Homonoy arrives on a recruiting mi.ssion to allaya Turkish invasion on the borders.

Otto and Zsui)an find theinselve.s in the army when they too join in thefestive ceremony of drinking recruiting wine and donning the Shako. Barinkay, wlio has picked the honored Shako, assumes command of the Romanysquadron. .\s he marches off to war, he reluctantly leaves Saffi and thetroanre in Kare.ska's custody.

The first of the victory celebrations in the palace is attended by theGypsy girls at Saffi's invitation. Kareska is bani.shed by Homonoy. nowChancellor of TTiingary. because of his boorish treatment of Saffi. UponZsiipan's and Otto's return, it becomes obvious that they enjoyed the warfar from the battle lines. They are greeted with marriage i)roposals fromMirabella and .\rletta.

Barinkay and the Romany Squadron arrive at the ball and are toastedby (iraf Homonoy. As a reward for valor, Barinkay's Barony is restored andhe is at last reunited with Saffi.

The Gyp.sy Baron, composed lo a libretto by Ignaz Schnitzer, had itsworld premier at Vienna Theater an der Wicn. on October 24. 1885, under thedirc<'tion of Johann Strauss. It ran for over one tliou.sand performances beforemoving on to other Viennese theaters. Like Strauss' Die Fledermaus, it hasconquered the world, and translations have been made for performances inevery language in the world.

The version pre.sented tonight is a modern version of the original libretto, with the book written by Phil Park and Conrad Carter and the music arranged and adapte<l by Ronald Hanmer.
