5 February 2016 To Whom It May Concern, It is with great pleasure I write to you regarding Joel Hayes and his suitability for employment. I had the responsibility of supervising Joel, while in the role of BeachCare Coordinator/Research Assistant at the Griffith Center for Coastal Management. Joel was initially employed as an intern in August 2012 through the Griffith University’s “Community Internship” Program where students engage with a business of social and/or community value or non for profit organizations and assist with tasks associated with operations. During his internship Joel looked at how Climate Change may affect the ongoing perceptions of volunteers with the BeachCare program and also helped organize and facilitate community beach clean ups and engagement events. Internships usually last 3 months (or up to 100 hours) during a semester to work away at tasks assigned to them. Joel excelled in the course being awarded with a High Distinction (94-100 %). After the internship concluded in February 2013, Joel was offered the position of BeachCare Coordinator within the Center. Still an undergraduate, Joel worked hard to balance his study, work and social life to progress every aspect of his early professional career. He became a valuable member of the team during his nearly two years in the position. It was always a pleasure to work with him and his presence in the office and at social work events was always optimistic. The nature of his work was flexible and mostly unsupervised, but he completed required tasks in a timely and effective manner with or without direction. I had the opportunity to witness his first conference presentation at the Queensland Coastal Conference held in 2013 where he almost secured the award as best student presenter at the conference, but was marginally outvoted. Joel presented his ideas surrounding community engagement and the value of training community leaders to increase participation in high valued volunteer programs such as the one he was coordinating. The main function of Joel’s role at the center was, but not limited to:

x Coordination of a community volunteer program x Report writing x Marketing x Resource design x Liaison between local government and community x Environmental education x Working with children x Working with elderly and people with special needs x Developing partnerships x Managing coastal environmental sites x Research assistance x Conference presentation x Grant writing

x Nomination writing x Workshop delivery

If the opportunity arose for Joel to be re-employed with the Center or any role in which my advice was necessary I would strongly recommend him as a leading candidate. As stated above he has a proven work ethic and attitude, which continually impressed his superiors and work colleagues. I am available at any time to assure Joel’s suitability and recommend him for a role in which he is suited. Yours sincerely,
