Message from Rev. Kanjun Nakano

More than a month has passed since I came to Hawaii. Be-cause of your warm welcome and the various ways you have helped me, I was able to start my life in Hawaii smoothly. I would like to thank you again.

I came here from Osaka, Japan, by myself. My wife is a musician like me. She has her own piano class at home for many children and adults from our community. She has been teaching piano for about 30 years since we were married. Be-cause of that, it is not easy for her to stop teaching her piano class right now.

Also, the biggest reason she cannot come to Hawaii now is that although both of my parents have passed away, her parents still live in Osaka. Though her parents live in peace together on their own now, her father is getting weaker after an opera-tion for cancer.

Our long awaited help for Rev. Yubun Narashiba has now arrived. Rev. Kanjun Nakano has arrived. Please do not hesitate to introduce yourselves when you see him.

Message from Rev. Nakano (cont’d):

Hawaii is on the other side of the ocean for her parents. If both my wife and I move to Ha-waii, they will feel uneasy. And also, we will have to worry about them, too, all the time. Therefore, my wife decided to stay in Japan for now. However, eventually, she will come to Hawaii though it is not in the near future. Actually, both of us are thinking of settling down in Hawaii and applying for the VISA for permanent residency.

Now, I am a minister and a musician. As a musician, I am always looking for an inspira-tional sound. There are good sounds and bad sounds. There are happy sounds, inspiring sounds and also uncomfortable sounds which make you cover your ears. Sounds can be made by human voices or musical instruments. These are the sounds that can be heard with your ears.

On the other hand, there are sounds which cannot be heard with your ears. They are the sounds which you can hear only with your heart.

The sound of the blue sky of Hawaii, the sound of the ocean, the sound of the wind, the sound of your hometown and the sound of your beloved ones.

What is the sound of your life? Is your life playing a good sound? Is your sound making people around you happy? Or, is your sound annoying others and you don’t know it?

The sound of your life becomes meaningful only when people around you listen to it. The people will hear all of your sounds even if your sounds are good or bad. And then, there are sounds from the infinite universe. You are supposed to be hearing them. The sounds from the infinite universe are the sounds from the Buddha.

Buddha is emitting wonderful sounds which everyone can hear with his or her heart. How-ever, many times, our hearts are too dirty to hear those sounds. But, don't worry. There is a way you can hear the sound anytime, anywhere.

That is Onenbutsu.

Honen Shonin told us that we should live a life so we can always say Onenbutsu at anytime and in any place.

Let's keep our hearts clean by Onenbutsu so that we can hear many wonderful sounds, as well as the sounds from the Buddha.

JAPAN YOSHIMIZUKO CONVENTION IN HAWAII

On June 25, 2010 commencing at 9:30 a.m., the Japan Yoshimizuko Convention will be held at Jodo Mission of Hawaii. We are expecting 480 members from Japan to participate in this Convention. Jodo Shu high priests and dignitaries will also arrive with the Japan Yoshimizuko group. This group will consist of three ma-jor Jodo Shu grand temples—Chionin, Zo-joji and Zendoji. This event will take place in two parts: Part I is the pre-800th Grand Memorial Ser-vice of Honen Shonin, officiated by the Archbishop Kisho Yagi of Zojoji Temple, which is located at Shiba Park in Tokyo. Part II is the Eisanka (Goeika/Gowasan) presentation by Chionin Yoshimizuko, Zojoji Yoshimizuko and Zendoji Yoshimizuko. The presentation will include Otonae (singing Goeika which are poems created by St. Honen and high priests adoring Buddha and Masters) and performing Omai (Buddhist dance). This is a very historical event for Betsuin to accommodate Archbishop Yagi and the three grand temple Yoshimizuko groups. What an honor! And such a once in a life-time event. On June 26th, this Japan Yoshimizuko group will split into three groups. Approxi-mately 200 will visit Hilo Meishoin and par-ticipate in their centennial celebration. Also approximately 120 Zojoji Yoshimizuko mem-bers will visit Maui temples and there will be a special service at Lahaina Jodo Mission. Also over 100+ will travel to Kauai and hold Goeika presentation at Koloa Jodo Mission.

Hawaii Kaikyoku no Goeika Over 100 years have passed since the teach-ing of the Nembutsu was brought to Hawaii with the arrival of Japanese immigrants. Since then, this teaching has flourished in the islands, despite great social changes and struggles. To-day in Hawaii, there are 14 Jodo Shu temples, devoted to the spread of the spirit of Nembutsu. The Chief Abbot Shinko Kishi of the Jodo Shu Head Temple, Chionin, visited the islands on two occasions to officiate the 750th Com-memorative Memorial Service for Saint Honen in 1959 and the 800th Anniversary of the Founding of Jodo Shu in 1972. On each visit, he met with Jodo Shu members on all islands and composed poems expressing his gratitude and the meaning of Nembutsu, and dedicated these poems to each of the temples. In spring 2000, Bishop Kido Matsunami led a Yoshimizuko seminar in Hawaii and com-posed musical scores to the Chief Abbot Ki-shi’s poems as goeika to sing. On January 12, 2001, these goeika were officially recognized by the Jodo Shu Eisho Committee of Jodo Shu headquarters in Japan as “Hawaii Kaikyoku no Goeika.” We hope that these songs will be sung at our temples and that visitors to our is-land temples may also enjoy singing these goeika to better understand the deep meaning of the Nembutsu. The Hawaii Yoshimizuko no Goeika are as follows:

Hawaii Jodo Shu no Goeika Mioshie wa totsukumi Hawaii ni

Tsuta warite Kyo no sakae wo miruga to u toki

Hawaii Jodo Shu no Goeika (translation) I witness with exultation

The thriving teaching of Nembutsu Perpetuated on these foreign shores

Hawaii Jodo Shu Betsuin no Goeika (translation)

The youthful countenance of St. Honen Stands in august dignity

In the garden of the Betsuin

Hawaii Jodo Shu Betsuin no Goeika Honolulu no Betsuin no niwa

Wakaki hino Soshi no dozo genzen toshite tatsu
