As her cancer progressed, Jocelyn did two remarkable things: First, relying heavily on her faith, she accepted her prognosis with incredible grace, speaking out publicly in schools and on television about what it was like to be young and facing cancer.

Secondly, Jocelyn asked her family if she could die at home, instead of in the hospital.

So the Huttons, along with friends, supporters and Jocelyn’s care team, took on the task of trying to provide all her care at home, when there were few policies or precedents for Palliative Care in a hospital setting and none for Palliative Care in the community.

A few years after Jocelyn died, the Hutton family donated their family home to the community, established a corporation and a board of directors and formed the first free standing hospice in Western Canada.

In 2006, the WRHA asked the Jocelyn House board to investigate the possibility of expanding the number of beds, either on the current site, or in a new location. There continues to be ongoing discussion about the right number of palliative care beds in the Province – Jocelyn House supports increasing the number of beds. Right now, 30% of people who want to die in their own home, do, not including people in Personal Care Homes. 70% of these people could be in another location – outside of acute care. Right now, in Manitoba, Northwestern Ontario and Nunavit combined, there are 16 palliative beds in total (Garnet this seems really low)

So the Board began considering a new, or expanded house, but before they did, the Board interviewed staff, families, volunteers and residents, asking the simple question: It’s easy to imagine a new Jocelyn House and all the things we would improve upon in a new and larger space, but what are the things about the current Jocelyn House that we want to make sure we don’t lose.
Page 17: Jocelyn House House full...The story of Jocelyn House begins with Jocelyn Hutton a high school student from St. Vital, who was diagnosed with cancer. As her cancer progressed, Jocelyn

The answer, in many different forms, was unanimous: Jocelyn House is a home – and it needs to continue to be a home.

The next question then, became: What is it that makes Jocelyn House feel like home? The response was developed into the organizational statement of intent.

From the moment a new resident arrives, they are warmly welcomed into Jocelyn House.

Because it is important that the people who live here feel comfortable and cared for, Jocelyn House looks and feels like a home.

In its beautiful, natural setting, life goes on at Jocelyn House, as together the residents, staff, volunteers, family and friends create an environment of trust, respect, support and acceptance.

Residents and their families come and go as they would in their own homes.

There are opportunities for people to be in each other’s company and for times of solitude.

Residents and families have the supports they need, so they can relax, reminisce, create new memories or share meaningful discussions.

High quality, progressive palliative care is a cornerstone of Jocelyn House.

Residents and their families have the information, knowledge, control and power to make decisions about care.

In the spirit of providing the best quality of care, families are encouraged to participate, ask questions, talk about what they feel is positive and express any concerns.

Jocelyn House feels like home because remarkable people make it so.

The staff and volunteers understand and achieve the goals of Jocelyn House.

Each person is clear about what is expected of them, their responsibility, authority and accountability and how this relates to the resident, house and the care team.

They have the freedom to be creative within that role.

Jocelyn House exists because Jocelyn Hutton and her family shared a philosophy about living fully to the end of life. Thousands of individuals and organizations in the community have supported that vision over the years. We will remain fiscally responsible. Jocelyn House is committed to being a strong community partner that works cooperatively with its donors and supporters, neighbours and the health care network.

It seems no matter where I go, when I mention Jocelyn House, someone always says, “oh, I knew someone who lived there, or sometimes they say I knew Jocelyn or the Hutton family,” We are working hard to keep the memory of Jocelyn’s dream of ‘feels like home’ alive and strong in Winnipeg. We use every interaction as a chance to share and to learn. We’re seeing the results as the community gets involved in supporting our work in so many wonderful ways.

Once we had our statement of intent, we were very fortunate to connect with a U of M architecture student who wanted to work on the design of a palliative care project.

Following is his interpretation of these words:

As you can see, Scott started his work with design concepts that included unique features such as flexible space and furnishings, components of remembrance and personable resting spaces.

The first design concept was the creation of a hub, where all the community and support areas would be housed, and from it would radiate 6 cottages – each with four residences a living room and a kitchen

The common area includes office space, a public reception area, laundry and other support services, the nerve centre for running the complex

The purpose of creating the cottages was to more closely replicate the home-like atmosphere in the current Jocelyn House including a private bed and bath, a common area and kitchen area in each cottage. This is a detailed description of the resident room. Scott’s vision of what a resident room might look like includes considerations to make private and public areas quite separate looking, with changes in the quality of light, private balconies etc. To provide appropriate medical care in a modern facility that feels like home.

This design also includes some outstanding features such as a tub / therapy room.

Scott even envisioned a meditation room that, from the exterior would be a defining tower and inside would provide a space specifically designed for peaceful contemplation, meditation and/or prayer. We were all very pleased and impressed with Scott’s vision of the future of Hospice care. But he was asked by his professor to come up with another option, one that had a smaller footprint.

So Scott took his vision upward, into a two storey structure…

This one included larger community spaces, a different perspective of views from the second floor and other features including interior space that reflects nature and a ramp system that divided the space in very unique ways.

One of the most unique features of the second plan is the flexible room layout. It allows for the space inside each room to adjust, As you can see, Scott put an incredible amount of work and creative thinking into this process. It was one thing for us, as a Board, to create a wish list for a new or expanded Jocelyn House. It is something else altogether to have this translated into such a detailed vision. I know that when the time comes to further develop this vision, it will be much richer because of his work. We know now that we can capture the best of what we currently have as we create something new. Thank-you, Scott

The last thing I want to share with you today is some remarkable work from talented young people in Winnipeg. As we were planning to launch ‘feels like home’, we approached a local art school – paradise found – and asked Jeff and Laura Kerr if they would partner with us. They graciously agreed. They asked their students to consider what home feels like to them, and create it in three dimensions. The students had a successful showing at the school in May and took their art home with them. What follows are some samples of their work, set to Chantal Kreviazuk (another young Winnipegger’s) song ‘ feels like home.’ I hope you enjoy it.
