Swings, slides and monkey bars are an intricate part of childhood. Going to the playground is part of growing up. What happens when a child is unable to navigate a playground or parents / grandparents are unable to manage the terrain? Instances where curbs or mulch surround the play structures inhibit walkers and wheelchairs from accessing the area. Playgrounds may be built near freeways or train tracks causing sensory issues. These types of obstacles can turn a fun outing into a disappointment for the child or adult with disabilities.

Great Inspiration Comes from

the Simplest BeginningsJocelyn Borzick sat one evening, scanning through the multitude

of posts on her Facebook feed, when intertwined among the

status updates and memes was a picture of a wheelchair swing.

She thought – WOW – that’s amazing.

So many of her son Logan’s friends were confined to wheelchairs

and unable to play with other kids. To Jocelyn, this type of swing meant freedom.

She knew what she had to do.

Logan is one of many children with special needs and has experienced the stigma of being different.

At school, he is placed in separate classrooms while he struggles to blend in both mentally and physically

with his peers. Logan’s disabilities aren’t as challenging as some. He has friends with harder lives spent

physically confined to wheelchairs. Others are constrained by overstimulation brought on by sensitivity

to lights, sounds or textures.

Children need to play with other children. Interaction is critical to problem solving, sharing, sportsmanship,

and especially, friendship. All Abilities Playgrounds are vital to build a world where children are exposed

to all types of individuals. More importantly, children without limitations need to learn how to play along

with children who do have limitations. If children can experience these differences at a young age, they

will have a deeper understanding of how it affects their friends, and eventually their co-workers and

society as a whole.

Where is the project now?

Through the help of a dedicated core committee combined with an exceptionally supportive community,

the St. Francis All Abilities Playground is in the process of becoming a reality.

1. Leather & Associates’ designers Jim Houghton and Steven Meyer have visited the proposed

site at Greene Park in St. Francis, Wisconsin.

2. Several successful fundraisers have covered initial design costs, including the drawing of

schematics and creation of a 3D schematic drawing.

3. The City of St. Francis has committed to providing the park area and continues to support the

overall efforts in making this playground a reality.

4. The committee continuously seeks ways to be involved in the community and to obtain support

from individuals, companies, foundations and other sources.

Special thanks to those who have already supported our efforts:

ZipKrooz is designed for non-stop flying. Thereis a dip in the middle of the structure that allows forthe child to gain enough momentum while slidingdown to reach the top of the other side and slideback again. The children can race each otherfrom end-to-end.

Wheelchair Swings work by the individual pullingthe center rope down and allowing it to go up, creating momentum and rocking the swing back andforth. This type of swing can be used by children oradults and builds a sense of independence.
