THE healthcare and pharmaceutical industry witnessed stable rise in talent demand in Jan-Jun 2016. The sector posted an average
1 per cent rise in Jan-Mar 2016. Hiring posted maximum rise in demand in Feb 2016, post that it reported an average 7 per cent drop in Mar-Apr 2016. Opportunities for doctors and medical professionals was high at the middle level and support functions are desired at junior and senior levels. Job share was maximum for professionals with 2-5 and 5-10 years of experience. With the healthcare industry seeing a robust growth trajectory, workforce in the sector is expected to be at 7.4 million in 2022 says a report by FICCI-KPMG. The report further states that the healthcare sector impacts the country’s GDP through various routes. It is also one of the largest sectors in India in terms of employment generation. With appropriate investments, the sector is expected to further increase the employment rate and positively impact the country’s GDP, says the report.

WHILE junior level job share dipped, talent demand was steady, especially for support roles in Jan-Jun 2016. Business management, hospitality, logistics and customer care
professionals had significant rise in demand at entry level in healthcare and pharmaceuticals sector. However doctors, nurses, medical professional and biotechnology, pharmaceutical profiles reported drop in demand, despite claiming significant job share. Specialisation in nursing, pharmaceutical and clinical research and analytical chemistry saw demand rise at junior level. Tier II and III locations had increased talent demand at junior level. Unlike Jul-Dec 2015, international locations witnessed decline in both job share and demand for entry-level talent. Even with negligible job share, Chattisgarh, Rajasthan and Uttarakhand posted rise in talent demand.

Considering the high attrition rate in healthcare industry, the sector will give opportunities to freshers in sales, lab operations, pharmacy, radiology etc. though the qualification and eligibility criteria follows respective specialisation.

RESEMBLING the trend in Jul-Dec 2015, talent demand was up across various specialisations at middle level during Jan-Jun
2016 in the healthcare sector. Doctors, nurses and medical professionals clocked maximum job share, along with a significant rise in demand. Similarly, logistics professionals claimed a high job share and talent demand was also buoyant. There was demand for accounting, finance, biotechnology, business management, medical writers and HR professionals in the sector. In analysis by area of specialisation, demand grew for surgeons, research scientists, medical imaging and technical sales experts. Jobs increased in international locations and so did the talent demand. Delhi-NCR too claimed significant jobs but talent demand was also noteworthy. Chennai was the best performing metro at middle level.

In this industry, emerging skills which will be game changers are strategists,
Big Data analytics, R&D, quality, regulatory and IT skills. At middle level,

THE job share at senior level improved compared to Jul-Dec 2015, but demand was slow in the healthcare and pharmaceutical industry during Jan-Jun 2016. The demand was sluggish for
both core and support roles. Business management, consultants claimed maximum job share, however the demand fell. The job share for doctors, nurses and medical professionals dropped and demand dipped by over 30 per cent. Surgeons, paediatrics, cardiologists and medical writers were in demand from Mar 2016 onwards. Accounting, IT and quality control/assurance were the most in-demand functions in this period. West Bengal clocked most jobs, but the demand was stunted. Delhi, the job hub in Jul-Dec 2015, reported drop in talent demand. While Chennai saw stable demand, hiring was muted in international locations at senior level.

With the emergence of numerous tech healthcare startups, the hiring in this space will see fair amount of rise in the number of healthcare jobs. The challenge is just to attract talent with good skills and retain that talent.

Emerging skillsToday, globally there is an increasing trend towards outsourcing R&D activities to specialised CROs as organisations look at maximising their R&D productivity. The CRO industry plays an important role in the value chain of their clients and there is a constant need for discovering new molecules and researching for sustainable solutions for critical diseases in a cost effective manner. The skills required are related to research, development capability, process knowledge and analytics.
Future outlookIndia is emerging as a favourable destination for outsourcing research and manufacturing services. The primary levers are quality education to produce employable talent, advanced pharmaceutical knowledge, skills and accelerated development of talent base within the industry.
