10 MYTHS ABOUT JOB HUNTING DURING A RECESSION It’s easy to get yourself down and believe some of the myths swirling around about looking for a job during a recession. As gloomy as it feels, jobs do still exist. Let’s debunk some of the most common myths about recession job hunting.

Myth 1: No one is hiring.Fact: While some industries are affected much more than others during a recession, many experience drastic growth and others are much quicker to bounce back. Also, many companies lay off regular employees, but hire consultants and freelancers instead, to save money, providing even more opportunities if you’re willing to look outside of the full-time job box. Myth 2: You have to accept less money.Fact: Companies are still willing to pay for good employees, and they understand that it is necessary to offer a competitive wage to have the best on their team. In fact, asking for less than your market value could be a turn-off. It’s OK to be flexible, but too much flexibility may make an employer feel you’ll be out the door as soon as something better comes along.

Myth 3: No one hires employees over 55.Fact: During a recession, companies are looking for ways to minimize costs—keep in mind that training a junior employee is a

Page 3: Jobs 7.7.2012

huge cost. The difference between finding an experienced candidate who needs minimal training and has a significantly shorter learning curve, and bringing on a junior employee with lower salary but a lack of experience and a large upfront investment in training, could easily make up the salary difference. Myth 4: If you have an outstanding education and great Experience, you’re guaranteed a job.Fact: Nothing guarantees a job these days. Your education is valuable to some companies, but direct experience usually (not always) trumps education. And don’t forget that personality and culture fit have just as much to do with getting the job as your experience and education.

Myth 5: You’ll find the jobs online.Fact: Job boards are a starting point in your jobs search, but they’re certainly not the only place to look. Face-to-face interactions, in-person networking, and social networking opportunities will prove to be crucial in your job search.

Myth 6: Don’t bother approaching companies in a hiring freeze.Fact: Don’t let the words “hiring freeze” stop you. First, if nothing else, you can build some contacts and establish relationships that will be useful later on, when the company starts to hire again. Second, employees continue to make changes and exceptions to hiring new employees will be made for replacement positions.

Myth 7: Temporary jobs are dead ends.Fact: Temporary positions sound like a quick, easy way to make some cash while you wait for something better to come along, but many times these positions will turn into full-time opportunities or at least give you an opportunity to get a foot in the door for future positions more aligned with your skills. Some employers are very cautious about hiring new people, so they hire a temporary/contract worker and then, if things work out, they will hire them permanently.

Page 4: Jobs 7.7.2012

Myth 8: All you can do is send out resumes and wait.Fact: Just sending out resumes and waiting for your phone to ring won’t land you a job. Get out there and be aggressive in your job search. You can seek out positions that aren’t necessarily being advertised by networking with people and meeting up with hiring managers at your target companies. Blindly applying for a job online is rarely how you will land your next position. Myth 9: No one will hire you if you’ve been fired. Fact: Most potential employers won’t know you were fired by just looking at your resume, unless you’re the one to bring it up. You’ll have the chance to win them over in the interview and when the topic of why you left your last position comes up, you can deal with it diplomatically. If you were fired in a job previous to your last position, it’s likely it won’t even come up.Myth 10: You should take the first job offered.Fact: It’s easy to think you should accept anything that comes along, with the economy so slow, but make sure you take time to consider as many options as possible. Consulting, freelancing, and even taking on temp jobs are all better options than getting stuck in a job you know in advance you will hate.

5 QUESTIONS TO ASK ON YOUR NEXT INTERVIEW

When it comes to job interview prep, much emphasis is put on having the right answers. But while you're struggling to come up with responses to queries on your biggest weakness and why you should be hired, don't forget to craft some smart questions, too.

Page 5: Jobs 7.7.2012

You will be judged, after all, by what you ask (or fail to ask).Candidates should always have questions prepared to ask during the interview. A lack of questions demonstrates a disinterest in the position and lack of preparation for the interview.

The questions you ask during an interview should give you a deeper understanding of the company and the job--and that information can help you better sell yourself as the right person for the position. Smart questions also show a prospective employer that you care about where you work, that you have some knowledge about the company, and that you understand the industry overall.

Ask a few relevant questions that demonstrate you've done your research and that you're enthusiastic, and that will help you to make an informed decision as to whether or not this is the right opportunity for you.

For your next interview, consider adding the following questions to your repertoire:

1. What happened to the last guy? Candidates should always ask what happened to the previous person who had the job. You are trying to tell if the job holder is promoted up into the company or if the company uses the person, burns them out and then they leave.

2. What do you like about working here? This question will give you further insight into the company's corporate culture and will give the interviewer a chance to talk about themselves for a change--and who doesn't like to talk about themselves?

3. How do people typically work together here? Even if the pay and job content sound good, it's important to understand the environment that you would be going into. Job seekers too often forget that this process is as much about them picking you and it

Page 6: Jobs 7.7.2012

is you picking them. You want to ensure the highest potential for success and eventually growth.

4. How can someone succeed at this job? This tells you exactly what they're looking for in a candidate and allows you to reiterate your relevant strengths.

5. What's next in the hiring process? Too many interviewees forget this easy question and are left wondering when to follow up later on.

Not all questions, however, are good. Avoid the following:

1. What do you do? "That general question makes me cringe every time I hear it asked. How can the person prove they are right for job if they don't even know what they would be doing?

2. How much is the pay? Don't ask about money too early in the interview process. It's a distraction and will draw attention to you as a dollar amount before they may be ready to evaluate your potential to add real and meaningful value.Likewise, don't ask about vacation days and paid holidays--wait for a job offer before you tackle compensation and benefits. This is a time to show what you can offer the prospective employer.

3. What are the hours? This question makes candidates look more like clock-watchers on the first interview rather than serious professionals.

4. Do you have other open positions? This offers the perception that the job you are interviewing for is of little or no interest to you.

5. Will there be a drug test? If you have to ask, it means you're concerned about your ability to pass.

HOW TO SPOT BAD COMPANY CULTURE

There are many factors to consider when deciding whether to take a new job: salary, benefits, title, and length of the commute. Those things are all important, but there is something else to think about before you accept an offer: Will you be happy at the company?

Bad company culture—often characterized by fear, intimidation, animosity, and laziness—is one of the biggest killers of job happiness. And being unhappy in your job can stunt your career in the long term, making you depressed and causing you to disengage.

Don't end up unhappy because you took a job with a company that has a bad culture. Instead, stay on the lookout for these warning signs when you go in for an interview.

1. The interviewer is a jerk. There's a good chance the person interviewing you isn't all that good at conducting interviews. Still, an awkward and uncomfortable interview may be par for the course. Even with skilled interviewers you can expect to feel like you've been put on the spot as you discuss your skills and experience. You shouldn't, however, feel like you're under attack.

If the interviewer is a jerk—if there is an edge to his questions, if he judges rather than evaluates, if he insults you—you may be getting an inside look at how people treat each other at the

Page 8: Jobs 7.7.2012

company. In other words, the interviewer's nastiness may be cultural.

If it starts there. It's downhill after they hire you.

Also, be wary of someone who puts you on the defensive, tears you down, and then offers you a job. If you're as much of a loser as they're making you out to be, why would they want to hire you?

2. You can't get a straight answer. A job interview goes two ways. While it’s certainly an opportunity for a prospective employer to vet you, it's also a chance for you to learn more about the place in which you may end up spending the bulk of your time. You can—and should—ask questions about the company. And you should get honest answers.

Negative environments tend to try to hide.

If an interviewer refuses to answer questions, gives guarded answers, or appears to be lying, it's a safe bet that he is trying to hide something. Good relationships, after all, are built on trust.

3. There's an unhappy vibe. When you arrive for your interview, try to get a look at the workplace. Do the people look happy and engaged? Can you hear the buzz of conversation and collaboration? Have employees personalized their workspaces? Or are they downcast and silent, just slogging away at stark desks until 5 p.m., when they can run for the hills?

Faces tell a thousand things without knowing it.

If spending just a few moments in the office is unpleasant, then spending your days there as an employee would be agonizing.

4. The company has a bad reputation. Hop online and do a little research. Search for company reviews, both from clients and employees. If there are an overwhelming number of negative

Page 9: Jobs 7.7.2012

reviews—especially from clients, whose satisfaction should be a top priority— then consider yourself warned.

If they are treating their customers poorly; you won't fare any better.------------------------------------------------------------------------
