– Leave the state! There are states where there IS still a demand for teachers

Assessment • Assess your options
– Self-led: online personality inventories (e.g., Keirsey Temperament Sorter), career-assessment worksheets/values clarification, lists of likes and dislikes
– Counselor-led: MBTI, Strong Interest Inventory, Work Preference Inventory…
• Assess your skills – Look at lists of transferable skills and select yours – Determine your best skill sets – Decide whether you will need additional
education/training

Developing a Plan
Searching for a job can take as much time as working a full-time job!
• Determine a timeline
• Review and revise your resume/job search materials
• Learn where and how to search for jobs
• Establish a routine and stick with it (devote a certain time period each day/week to work on this)
• Be sure to build in follow-up procedures
• Consider your financial assets/requirements

Remember: To conduct effective networking, you will need computer access
• Join professional organizations; attend conferences.
• Attend specialized workshops.
• Use available district retraining/outplacement resources (if you want to stay in education).
• Locate alumni connections/referral services (for career changers).
• Consult with friends, relatives, community agencies.
• Volunteer and/or job shadow.
• Collect of business cards from possible resources.

LOCATING EXTRA HELP (Don’t be Afraid to Ask!)
• Contact the Career Services office at the college/university
you attended.
• Ask the district (if you’ve already taught) about outplacement services.
• Find a career mentor (especially if you’re changing careers).
• Join a support group for unemployed workers.
• Consider work with a temporary agency while you search.
• Seek personal counseling if the stress becomes overwhelming.
