The goal of preparing a JHA is for those responsible for or performing any work to review the risks and possible complications of that work and to consider ways of mitigating those risks and complications. Remove and set aside for later use the covers on the FVC camera mount port and the four (4) circular access ports surrounding it. Set all the cover mounting screws aside with their respective covers.

Position the jacking cart under the telescope to the SE of the mirror cell, where the 5T dome crane hook can reach it from above. Put the wooden box/height extension on top of the jacking cart with the jack fully lowered, center the adapter plate on the wooden box, and lash the adapter, box and top of cart together for stability using the nylon ratcheting straps. Be sure not to cover or obstruct any bolt holes with the straps.

Lift the base baffle tube section high enough to clear the adapter plate on the cart. Position the cart under the baffle tube section. Lower the baffle tube section onto the adapter plate, taking care to align the bolt circle (10mm through holes) in the baffle tube section bottom flange with the corresponding holes on the adapter plate. Bolt the base tube section securely to the plate. Detach the lifting sling ends from the crane, remove the sling, and remove the eyebolts from the tube flange.

Roll the jacking cart back to its starting position and place the upper baffle tube section under the crane hook by hand, oriented vertically with the aperture flange facing up.

Lift the extension baffle tube section high enough to clear the adapter+base section assembly. Position the cart under the suspended baffle tube section. Lower the extension baffle tube section onto the top flange of the base baffle tube section, taking care to align the bolt holes on the mating flanges of the tube sections (will require personnel on step ladders or movable work platforms on either side of the baffle tubes). Bolt the extension baffle tube section securely to the base baffle tube section at the mating flanges. Detach the lifting sling ends from the crane, remove the sling, and remove the eyebolts from the extension tube section aperture flange.

8. Clear the area under the telescope of everything except the adapter+baffle tube assembly on the jacking cart.

Roll the jacking cart underneath the telescope from the South East, taking care that the adapter plate is oriented roughly correctly North-South: North is marked on both sides of the adapter plate with silver Sharpie notations. Lock the wheels of the jacking cart.

10. Three people clip into fall restraints previously attached to the mirror cell bottom.

Raise the mirror lift as far as possible. The three fall-restrained people ride up on the lift, stabilizing the cart and the subassembly as it rises and ensuring that the stovepipe is roughly centered in the central hole of the mirror cell.

Once the mirror lift has reached the maximum height allowed by the Cass cage, jack up the jacking cart until the adapter plate is almost in contact with mirror cell.

14. Install the bolts, and tighten them sequentially, working around the bolt circle.

16. Lower the mirror lift back to the level of the Main floor.

Using four ¼-20 socket head screws inserted through the counter-bored holes in the mounting plate (Detail D of YALE-DESI-FVC-SA1-P3), secure the camera to the adapter plate.

18.

Fit each square strut into each square cutout in the camera adapter plate, making sure that the threaded hole pattern in the strut sides are closer to the adapter plate than the free end. Secure to the adapter plate with ¼ -20 socket head cap screws and tighten.

19. Attach gusset plates with 8-32 flat heads as shown in the 3D rendering in the Yale drawing package.

20. Remove the rear (smaller) protective cover from the lens.

21. Remove the protective cover from the Birger adapter on the camera body.

If not already present, apply a small amount of a mild thread-locking compound (blue Loc-Tite or similar) on the ends of the threaded studs that will tie the two halves of the clamp together. Allow the thread-locking compound to dry.

-When working with or around thread-locking compounds, avoid contact with sensitive areas, such as the eyes, nose, and mouth. If contact occurs, follow the “First Aid Measures” on the applicable Safety Data Sheet (SDS). -Inspect PPE before and after each use. Report any abnormalities or imperfections to the job supervisor.

Fit one of the clamp halves around the lens at the free end so that the counter-bored holes face UP and line up with their threaded counterparts on the support struts. Loosely fit ¼-20 socket head cap screws.

24.

Fit the second clamp half onto the threaded studs of the first clamp, apply both washers and nuts and tighten clamp. The second pair of counter-bored holes should line up with the remaining threaded holes in the two struts. Insert ¼ -20 socket head cap screws and tighten all four.

25. (One person) CAREFULLY carry the camera-lens-support subassembly down the stairs and into the Cass cage.

-When using the stairs to transport equipment, workers must use caution. -An alternative solution must be used if workers are unable to safely transport equipment using the stairs.

26.

CAREFULLY insert the subassembly into the square hole in the adapter plate and lift it until the subassembly base plate aligns with the two 6mm diameter alignment pins on the adapter plate. It may help to have one person support the subassembly while another person guides it onto the pins.

27. Loosely install the three M6 mounting bolts through the subassembly base plate into the threaded holes on the adapter plate.

At each of the M6 bolt locations, insert three (3) thickness of brass 0.010” shim stock between the subassembly base plate and the adapter plate, around the M6 bolts. Tighten the bolts sequentially.

Install the round Delrin covers over the West and South access ports adjacent to the FVC. In the other two round Delrin covers, drill through-holes and attach brackets for mounting the NUC interface box (East cover) and the FVC power supply (North cover). Attach the NUC interface box and power supply using their respective brackets. Install the covers with electronics attached over the East (NUC) and North (Power) access ports.

-Examine covers and brackets for abnormal wear or structural damage. -When working with power tools, workers may experience vibration and noise hazards. -Adequate hearing protection is required for noise levels over 85 dbA. -To minimize a tripping hazard, keep covers and brackets out of working path as much as possible. -Inspect PPE before and after each use. Report any abnormalities or imperfections to the job supervisor.
