Job Title: Pub Manager Reports to: Management Liaison Director Line management responsibilities: Bar and cleaning staff Main purpose of the job To manage The Puzzle Hall Community Pub Limited and its staff in order to create and maintain a vibrant, community-focussed, financially self-sufficient pub Working closely with and supported by the Management Liaison Director. Responsibilities Staff 1. Lead and motivate the staff team in order to deliver consistently excellent customer service, ensuring policies and procedures are followed by all staff. 2. Recruit, train, manage and supervise the staff team including rostering, time sheets, holiday management, staff development, capability and disciplinary. 3. Ensure that the staffing budget is adhered to. The Pub Manager will need to work behind the bar in order to meet this objective. 4. Hold regular staff meetings, one-to-one staff meetings and lead the performance appraisal process for each member of the team. 5. With Management Liaison Director, develop, implement and review operational procedures for all staff, for example those relating to pub, staff, stock and cellar management, opening/closing, security, till, PDQ, cashing up and banking. 6. Liaise with the Chair, Treasurer and Accountant to ensure that requirements relating to salaries, national insurance, PAYE, statutory sick pay and VAT are met.

Finance and Stock Control 7. Purchase stock and manage and monitor stock levels in order to minimise

wastage, meet customers’ needs and facilitate efficient, regular stock checks alongside an external stock taker.

8. Ensure that purchasing follows financial procedures, best value for money is obtained and purchasing is in line with the organisation’s commitment to social responsibility.

9. Liaise with the bookkeeper in order to develop and implement appropriate procedures to check all expenditure and pay all bills/invoices. `

10. Monitor and track income, expenditure and staff costs to ensure that they are

in accordance with the annual budget.

11. Liaise with the bookkeeper and Treasurer in order to ensure that financial records (paper and electronic) are kept up-to-date at all times in order to facilitate reporting.

12. Maintain statistical and financial records. Marketing and Events 13. Working with the Management Liaison Director and Entertainments &

Committee, implement and review appropriate marketing strategies (e.g. advertising, regular/special events), using a wide range of electronic and traditional media, in order to – as a minimum – meet targets set within the budget.

14. Working with the Entertainments & Events committee, manage a programme of regular events including music festivals, poetry evenings, and gigs.

15. Liaise with the Community Director to accommodate community events. The

Puzzle will be used outside the hours of licenced trade by the voluntary and community sector and it will be part of the manager’s role to facilitate and develop this.

Other 16. Develop and maintain relationships with committees, volunteers, the local

community and other relevant organisations that patronise or use the facilities of the Puzzle.

17. Attend regular meetings with Management Liaison and Chair, to assess operational fitness and business strategy.

18. Responsible for cellar management.

19. Ensure that all legal requirements are adhered to such as licensing laws, environmental health, employment law and health and safety.

20. Develop, implement and review health and safety procedures to ensure the health and safety of staff, customers and all those who come into the pub.

21. Liaise with the Management Liaison Director with regard to building maintenance and capital expenditure in order to maintain a pleasant customer environment, whilst staying within budget.

22. Act as the main point of contact for complaints, suggestions and customer feedback, respond appropriately and use the feedback to deal with issues/make improvements.

23. Aspects of the responsibilities above may be delegated to staff, but overall responsibility remains with the manager.
