What is The ANSWER Key?
• A routine for answering reading comprehension open response questions
• When used school-wide, provides a consistent model as students move from grade to grade and teacher to teacher
• A consistent routine fosters more independence
In this training, you will:
• Learn a routine for answering open response questions
• Learn how to teach the routine to students
• Practice applying the routine to sample questions
• Become familiar with the research about effective feedback to students
• Practice generating open response questions from your content area

Using Open Response to Learn Content
The ANSWER Key is helpful for open response questions on state
assessments.
However,teaching students to answer open
response questions is also a valuable tool for learning content
information.

Basic Training Information
• One-day training, preferably for a team of teachers from the same school
• For educators in grades 3-10 who teach students how to answer reading comprehension open response questions
• This training does not focus on open response questions for math, science, or social studies.
