INVISIBLE SHAPES OF THINGS PAST
• Joachim’s early and
contemporary work involves
exploring moving image and
how it could translate its data
into a physical space. His series of
sculptures were inspired by multi-
exposure photography, film and
the way cubists and futurists
broke down linear representation
of space and time in sculpture.
He has continued to add to this
series since 1995.
FLOATING NUMBERS - 2004
• The piece consists of floating numbers on an interactive touch surface. Once touched by the visitor the numbers reveal content that they represent and also react to physical stimuli on the table in a continuous and organic nature. The object is meant to engage the visitor in a dialog with the applications as well as other visitors.
• The numbers are “typobots” with specific behaviors programmed to give the feeling of an autonomous and non-deterministic system.

DISCUSSION
• Do you think Joachim and his collaborators are successfully exploring new ways to translate data expression into physical spaces?
• Why is it important to explore how technology can affect visual expression in the fields of art and design?
• Do these installations and sculptures make you feel aware of data being physical? Or does the final form of his work end up masking the presence of data and processing?
