A MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR

Christmas time can be the most wonderful time of the year to save towards your financial goals because you may get a bonus, earn extra from your talents or receive cash gifts. Here are some tips that will help you save towards your goals, without sacrificing the holiday cheer, and in

January have a happy new year.

Budgeting towardsContributed

Michelle Sinclair-Doyley , Client Financial Education Manager

Planning is Key – How much do you need to save every month to achieve your financial goals within your time-line? Saving a part of your Christmas bonus, will allow you to reduce the amount of time it would take you to achieve your goals, or reduce the amount you will need to save each month. A free JMMB goal planning session will give you the information you need to determine how much you can afford to spend on Christmas gifts, and the best financial options for your money.

Save in Your Goal Account – If you want to ensure the money for your financial goals is “safe”, transfer the money to your goal account before you begin shopping.

Create a Separate Spending

Account – Place only the amount you intend to use for holiday spending in this account. Psychologically, it will help to curtail how much you spend.

Walk with Your Gift List – Do not go shopping without it. Remember, if you go over budget on one person’s gift, it is essential that you go under budget with someone else’s, to balance out.

Encourage Cash Gifts – Where appropriate, suggest that your preferred gift be a JMMB Gift Certificate, towards your special goal.

Make Your List – Make a list of all your intended expenditures, and the persons you would love to treat. Total the amount, then check your list twice, to determine whether there are persons or items you can eliminate. If you are over-budget, but cannot think of eliminating anyone or anything, you can get creative and give some personalized home made gifts.

Make the Christmas merry for you and yours but remember, the more you save, the more prosperous your new year.

The expression “there’s no place like home”,

doesn’t become more factual than around

Christmas time in Jamaica. As the yuletide

season approaches, there is a sense of

joy, happiness, togetherness and good

‘ole Jamaican niceness’ that fills the air.

If you should go outside, you can literally

take a whiff of Christmas in Jamaica, as

persons get ready to enjoy the season in true

Jamaican style. Apart from the decorations,

the lights, Christmas carols and hustle and

bustle of shopping districts, no Jamaican

Christmas is complete without traditional

Jamaican Christmas dishes.

To truly enjoy a Jamaican Christmas, here

are some must have recipes that you can use

to create a memorable dinner experience.

** Recipes adopted & tweaked from www.eatjamaica.com and www.jamaicans.com

Ways to Keep Healthy This Holiday Season

Live WellHere are five quick tips to help you maintain a healthy

lifestyle this holiday season, as you enjoy the festivities.

Drink a glass of water before you partake in a meal - Numerous studies have shown that drinking water before meals can result in consuming fewer calories. Water will help to give you a fuller feeling and will take up some of the room in your stomach, making you less hungry and less likely to overeat.

Get Active – Physical activity includes all forms of activities, such as walking, cycling, playing, dancing, competitive sports and even gardening. Set aside some time to participate in some physical activities this holiday season, as doing so will ensure that a balance is created between the consumption of holiday meals and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Eat your meals in small portions – Eating smaller portions more frequently throughout the day, will help to maintain constant blood sugar levels. Low blood sugar levels make you feel tired and slows down your metobolism rate which is critical to the digestion process.

Take a break before consuming dessert – Allow the main meal to be digested properly, before heading for dessert. Strike up a family conversation, take a quick walk or play with the kids – find some activity to do while allowing a reasonable amount of time to lapse, before eating dessert. This will aid in the overall digestion process.

Limit how much alcohol you consume - Social gatherings and celebrations often call for us to celebrate with a glass of wine or your preferred alcoholic beverage. The key to alcoholic consumption is doing so in moderation. Know your limit and be careful not to overindulge.

1 Write Down Your Resolutions –

It’s more encouraging to write down and have a visual reference for your resolutions. Making a mental note of what you want to achieve is simply not good enough. Make a ‘resolution wall’ with actual images of what your resolution goals will look like, when you achieve them. Find a photo of the new car that you want to buy, how the additions to your home will look, or how you will look after your new weight loss programme. This will serve as a daily reminder and encouragement of your goals, and push you forward to achieving them.

Setting & Sticking to your New Year’s ResolutionsNew Year’s resolutions, we all have them, because resolutions create a sense of hope, of something attainable, new goals that we can look forward to achieving. As the year 2014 comes to an end, and before you start setting new goals to be achieve in the new year, here are some tips to ensure that you set realistic goals, stick to your goals, and create solid life-long habits.

2 Focus on one goal at a time – It is possible to have made more than one resolution, however it is imperative that you do not consume yourself with trying to achieve them all at once. Focus on what is your priority goal and try to achieve that one first, and then move to the next goal.

Page 17: JMMB LIVING DECEMBER 2014

Seek Support – Some of the resolutions that we make, will require us seeking support from others. A support system is important for motivation and encouragement. Find a support system such as a best friend, church group or even a financial advisor. Share your resolution goals with them and allow them to support you.

Review Your Progress – Set aside some time to review where you are in achieving your goals. You may need to change direction, or you may need to make adjustments to some of your timelines.

Celebrate your Successes – No success is too small to celebrate. Celebrate every milestone reached in achieving your goals. This will give you the added boost needed to keep going, and also to reward yourself for your hard work. If your goal was to lose weight, go ahead and treat yourself to new a new outfit that will flaunt your new physique.

Keep Going – Along the way to achieving your goals, there may be distractions and moments that you feel like giving up. Don’t. Keep going and keep pushing yourself. There is no greater feeling of pride than to know you have accomplished something that you set your mind on achieving, inspite of all the obstacles.
