How big is Scunthorpe?

Only 70,000 people live in Scunthorpe making it a relatively small town. It’s famous for its steel works – one of the most modern, clean and efficient steel producing centres in Europe but has several parks and green areas within the town.

What is there to do in the town?

There is a museum, theatre, leisure centre with swimming pool, bowling alleys, library, snooker hall, sports fields, golf courses and cinema.

What is there to see in the area?

We are surrounded by small villages. Nearby you can visit the Humber Bridge, Normanby Hall country house and the historic city of Lincoln.

Is it a safe town?

Since it’s fairly small, rural and friendly it’s quite a safe town to live in.

Can I get foods from my home country?

There are specialist food shops including those selling Chinese food and Halal meat in Scunthorpe. In addition you will find many international restaurants.

What shops and services does the town have?

You will find banks, clothes shops, supermarkets, pharmacies, a law centre and multi-racial advice centre in the town centre.

Where can I go to pray?

There are churches, mosques and temples in the town which reflect the different religions present in the population.

What is the weather like?

Average temperatures are approximately 5oc in January and 25oc in July.

“A homestay is a good opportunity to get to know English culture, and understand the way the average British person lives. It is also helps me improve my English. My host family is really nice and they do their best to make sure that I feel at home.”

Timur Kozhakhmetov, Almaty, Kazakhstan

Page 16: JLC International Prospectus 2012-13

Your first step to an inspiring futurewww.leggott.ac.uk

JLC international students live with a host family in homestay accommodation. We choose host families very carefully and all are police checked and inspected by the college before we will let you move in.

Most homes are within walking distance of college but some students use public transport or cycle to college. You will share breakfast and evening meals with your family on weekdays and all meals at weekends and holidays.

Accommodation fees are paid directly to your family. The cost per week is £105.

Accommodation

“The advantage of a small town is that JLC knows every host family and therefore the relationships between students, host families and the college are very close. Parents can contact them very easily. In addition, Scunthorpe is very convenient as well as quiet and safe in comparison to big cities such as London or Manchester.”

Life-long friendships

“My host family treat me as their own daughter and I feel very safe. Being away from my own parents has taught me to become more independent and since I get on very well with my host family we have become really good friends and I have had the most enjoyable experience of living in a different country. Homestay gives you the chance to practice and improve your language and get to know the English culture.”

Maria Golovanova, Pyatigorsk, Russia

“Our children expressed that the most effective way to upgrade their English is to stay with a host family. It is very different in Hong Kong, where they practice spoken English only for a few minutes in English classes.”
