I vividly remember several years ago listening to him relate a story from a book that he had read, telling the story of a mother who never "spent a dime". My father described this far from stingy mother, who had a thrifty quirk, and whose children grew more and more concerned about their mother's fascination with dimes. The mother ran a tight ship, and she and her husband passed this virtue onto their children. The term "the good ole days" could have originated from the home that my father so vividly described. This mama never ran out of energy or food. Unexpected company, well, that was expected in this home. Little did the children know growing up in this home, that they were growing up in the Depression, because they never felt deprived. Years passed and the children left the family home and began raising families of their own. It was on a visit home, as the girls were out shopping with their mother, that they realized her obsession with dimes had not been shaken. She would break a dollar bill before she would pay for it with a dime, even if the price was one dime. The girls wondered...'What is wrong with our mama?' The family tradition was they gathered for dinner at 4 o'clock, and they were not to be late. Despite everyone's willingness to help their parents prepare for the dinner, the parents refused. Every detail was taken care of and dish after dish came, as if they were at a banquet. After dinner, the girls were helping their mother clean up and they all insisted on sharing the expenses of the meal. Their mother laughed, and told her children not to worry- "I paid for it with a year of dimes that I have saved". The joke was on them! Their mother's thrifty fascination with dimes was actually a gift to them. This savvy mother was modeling and then passing on the giving tradition that her children would then pass onto their own children. As we look back and celebrate our 95 years as the Junior League of Chattanooga, this story resonates within our membership. We are blessed with women that have modeled the gift of volunteerism and giving back. As I have said before, when I look back, I can't help but look forward...opportunities abound for us to continue to pay it forward. The Board of the JLC and I thank you for continuing to be catalysts for lasting community change and appreciate all the "dimes" you continue to give to forward our mission and vision. TOUR OF TREES

Let’s give $95 for 95 years as a League! It is time to kick off the 2012-2013 JLC Annual Fund. Thank you to all of those that gave at the November GMM. This year, Actives and Provisional will be receiving their letter via email, and Sustainers will receive their letter in the mail. Keep in mind that any donation helps, and will go directly towards our mission. In December, those that have not made a donation will receive a call from one of their fellow Provisional class members. Every member of the JLC Board has pledged to donate this year. Join them in making a tax deductible gift! Remember, you can make a gift for the future. A bequest is one of the simplest ways to support the JLC. These gifts ensure the League can continue its work to promote volunteerism, develop the potential of women, and improve the community.

NOVEMBER 5, 2012 GMM MINUTES

The 2012 Fall Provisional class is excited to announce their Provisional Project has started! The Provisionals will be collecting women's clothing for a local facility called The Next Door. The 30 bed facility houses local women finishing their prison sentence and addresses the

mental, physical, and spiritual needs of women who have been incarcerated. The Next Door prepares women for leading independent lives after prison. The Next Door strives to help the women become productive members of their communities through workforce development, anger management, and substance treatment services.

The Next Door has an immense need for interview apparel for their residents. The facility has a 'boutique' the residents can 'shop' and borrow an outfit for their job interviews. Currently there are few items in the 'boutique' and the clothes that they do have are tattered and

outdate. The Provisional class has been tasked with organizing a clothes drive for The Next Door. They had a brainstorming session at their Provisional meeting and they are well on their way to tackling their project! The Provisional class is starting their project by touring the facility November 27 at 6 p.m. to see how their efforts will help these women.

Stay tuned for project updates. If you would like to donate, please contact Provisional Co-Project Leaders: Barbara Johnson at [email protected] or Sarah Murray at [email protected].

There is free admission to the Designers’ Tour of Trees for members and family. Membership credits will be given for attendance. Education and Training Chair Angela Ballard spoke regarding prior education and training events that partnered with the Food Coalition and Chattanooga Area Food Bank.
