  • 8The Cube is a study of positive and negative space. It

    considers negative space equally important as positive space.

    By utilizing the idea of movement around a central core, a symmetric pat-

    tern of different scaled cubes guides the eye

    around the space.

    Once the cube was considered as a skeletonian structure, paper was inserted to further promote the

    movement of pieces away out from a central core piece.

    The timber bridge was located on a hypothetical small, one acre farm in Detroit. Central to the idea of the timber bridge was simplicity. The usage of notching and large timber members allowed the bridge to be simple and clear in assemby and composition.

    Located in downtown Windsor, this parkette served as a play-ground for university students, urbanites, families, and children.

    The goal to create a playground that also served as an escape from hectic city life was centered around a childhood memory of running up and down hills.

    The undulation of planes allowed for freedom in activity as well as private spaces for studying or relaxing.

  • Isaac Agree SynagogueAn examination of urban semiotics through the binoculars of the sacred

  • As the last free-standing synagogue in Detroit, Isaac Agrees identity has endured de-spite a shifting city. In order to determine how a place of worship situates itself in the midst of a downtown, studies of landmark and semiotics in the urban context became necessary. These studies, then, asked questions like:

    How does one situate themselve in a city?

    How does one know that something is sacred? Do we read it, or is it under stood in another way?

    Contradictions at the site -In a digital world, why does site matter?

    Intention: if the site is full of contradictions/in-betweens anyway, why not let people explore their own in-betweeness?

    Different types of in-betweens:

    -highway as a void, yet a wall

  • The Stratified Memorariuman examination of trace and memory

    The investigation of memory began with the story of Funes the Memorious by the Argentinian short story writer, Jorge Luis Borges. In the story, Funes falls off of a horse and when he regains consciousness he is plagued with the ability to remember every detail. Not only does he remember everything he experiences, he remembers everything he has ever imagined. His memory is like a garbage disposal, constantly digesting fragments without the ability to ever draw conclusions.

    There becomes this constant undulation of the present and real with the remembered and imagined.

    Inspired by the quotes from the novel, Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino, this was the first examination of the idea of trace and memory. It was then interpreted as a shadow and next brought into three dimensions by the following model.

    We each have a city within us.

    All these beauties will already be familiar to the visitor, who has seen them also in other cities.

    Only in Marco Polos ac-counts was Kublai Khan able to discern, though the walls and towers destined to crumble, the tracery of a pattern so subtle it could escape the termites gnawing.

    This mental map brought about the idea that part of the creator exists in his or her creation. This mental map was my own acknowledgment and realiza-tion that my left and right brain had always wrangled when it came to approaching designing or creating.

    I was considering the idea of fractal as a repeated piece that contributes to the overall whole of a thing. There is an intimate relationship between the part and the whole.

    In these pictures, the model and the shadow become one. Again, he real and abstract are joined to be one.

    Furthermore, trace was understood as carving. For example, consider flamenco dancers on a dancefloor. Their repeated, energetic movements eventually cause little carvings in the floor. These carvings are voids that remember an action that once was.

  • Jefferson Chalmers Design/Build Project: Coffee and (___)The Jefferson East Business Association partnered with AIA Detroit to turn several previously vacant storefronts into usable spaces for the local 2013 jazz festival. Young architects and students came together to reinvigorate the space, balancing the needs of the client and a limited budget.

    My Contribution: The back courtyard

    The design of this space was centered around the pal-let motif. The goal was to allow the pallets to become useful for what they were. They became useful not only as a decorative accent in the courtyard, but also provided intimate nighttime lighting.
