4 Jersey Journal – July/August 2013

Western Districts, Gippsland and the Northern Districts again with visitors blown away not only by the impressive type and production of herds but also by the vast range of dairying conditions in which our members base their businesses. Many thanks to the members of and Committees behind, the Colac & Districts Jersey Breeders Club, Central Gippsland and Southern

Gippsland Jersey Breeders Clubs for all your work to ensure that all international visitors had a great time in your region.

The Gold Rush Down Under Tour was a wonderful success not only because of the efforts of our members but also by the many sponsors that supported the event. Support from the Victorian Government and Department of Primary Industries also left a lasting impression on visitors especially those interested in the future possibilities from current Dairy Industry research here in Australia. I have no doubt this tour will strengthen International collaboration on research, facilitate the freeing up of Jersey genomic data sharing around the globe and of course offer many opportunities for the export of Australian Jersey genetics around the world.

I leave you with the comments of WJCB Secretary James Godfrey who wrote:

“The World Jersey Cattle Bureau Annual Council Meeting and Study Tour, held in Australia this year, has been described as a huge success. The travelling party peaked at some 60 delegates

who participated in a packed programme of visits to farms, bull studs and research establishments. To enrich the program further, attendees also took-in an array of visiting speakers.”

“Jersey Australia arranged a superb itinerary with visits to many herds all displaying Jersey cattle of the very highest quality and

farmed in a variety of management situations. The general conclusion of the delegates is that we will be seeing much more

of the Australian Jersey on the world cattle breeding scene in the future.”

JJ JERSEY AUSTRALIA by Scott Joynson

Behind the ScenesThe month of May capped off a wonderful year for Jersey

Australia and in turn a terrific boost for the profile of the Australian Jersey cow.

Mainstream media reported the fact that Jersey Australia had come back from a loss the previous year to a strong profit. Also reported was the fact that many records were set by the organisation during the past 12 months which included; several multi vendor sale record prices, record export interest for Australian Jersey genetics and of course the processing of 22,941 registrations in a single calendar year.

Looking forward, the challenge for the coming year is to continue on with the momentum created by the breed’s hard won recent successes.

Up for the challenge I’m sure is Jersey Australia’s newly elected President, Peter Ness. Mr Ness was full of praise for the outgoing Chairman Trevor Saunders who held the position since the formation of Jersey Australia in 2008. Trevor was presented “Life Membership” in 2012 and is on record as saying he can’t wait to get his teeth into his new role as the Genetics Committee Chairman. The vacated position of Treasurer is now filled by Rohan Sprunt with Milton Johnston continuing on as Vice President as does Chris MacKenzie as Junior Vice President and Troy Mauger as Promotion Committee Chairman.

The 2013 Annual General meeting was hosted by the Northern & Districts Jersey Breeders Club who provided a wonderful itinerary in and around the Port of Echuca, Victoria. The Jersey Australia Board would like to thank the members who opened their farms during the event as well as to the Club Executive and their team for all the work chasing up sponsors, venues, accommodation, elite Jersey catalogue etc. Of course the Board would also like offer a hearty congratulations for the hugely successful 7th Northern Lights Sale that achieved a new record average of $4342 in front of a huge crowd that included over 60 international visitors.

Jersey Australia was approached by the World Jersey Cattle Bureau during 2012 to host its Annual General Meeting which included a three week supporting program of events. In keeping with the Jersey Australia Board’s wish to promote the Australian Jersey beyond its own shores the offer was accepted and a program quickly put together to the satisfaction of the WJCB Executive.

The event began in NSW touring through Camden and Wollongong with visitors impressed by the quality of cattle and hospitality offered by the Cumberland & Southern Districts Jersey Breeders Club. The Tour moved to Victoria visiting the

World Jersey Cattle Bureau James Godfrey out on farm in Northern

Victoria and full of praise for Australian Jerseys.

JERSEY AUSTRALIA seeks expressions of interest from members who might be interested in being part of a Trade Mission to South Africa 12th - 20th September 2014. The trip will include the Jersey South Africa hosted WJCB Conference and is likely to cost approximately *$4750 - $5500 AUD.For more information contact Robyn Barber 03 9338 9259 [email protected]*pricing and final itinerary to be confirmed

6 Jersey Journal – July/August 2013

The O’Mearas sold off their Friesian herd in 2002 when drought and deregulation left their farm near Bega losing $20,000 a month after a 60 per cent cut in their milk price.

“We decided that it wasn’t worth going into more debt to milk cows at a loss,” Craig says. He went into an off-farm business as a sandblaster, but was always driving Julie crazy with ideas about ways to stay in touch with dairying.

In 2009, the O’Mearas decided that Jerseys might give them a way back into dairying if they could breed and sell show cows to supplement milk income. They called the stud “Salvation Jerseys”.

The O’Mearas also have eight daughters aged up to ten, and the girls have their own stud.

The girls learn to spray teats as soon as they can easily reach them, and then progress at their own rate to rounding up the herd and helping with milking and showing. The O’Mearas are glad to have Jerseys because “they are great with the children”.

They started the reborn stud with 70 Jerseys bought from Winnie Oslear. Craig says Winnie’s strong cow families get good results with semen from American bulls.

MORE than a century after their ancestors began dairying on the New South Wales south coast, Craig and Julie O’Meara hope that their new all-Jersey herd will give them a way back into dairy farming.

Salvation Jerseys inspire new generationSwitching to Jerseys might enable a Bega family with eight young daughters to continue five generations of dairy tradition.

The future of the stud is not yet secure, but Craig and his daughters collected a few more ribbons at this year’s Sydney Royal Easter Show.

Craig says he was both proud and humbled to be in the front line with breeders whose excellence with Jerseys matches their consideration for people.

“We decided to give Jerseys a go.”Craig’s great-grandfather James began

dairying near Cobargo in the 1800s. Julie is from a neighbouring family the Allens, who were already dairying in coastal foothills 16kms inland from Bermagui when the O’Mearas arrived.

Craig says the non-irrigated farm is “a bit hilly, but not too steep”. It has good coverage of granite-based soils and 2km of creek. It grows rye grass, clover, paspalem and kikuyu, and winter crops of oats and triticale.

At Easer, they were milking 120 to 140 Jerseys and had 30 to 40 dry cows and about 180 heifers. They were planning to reduce production and sell 60 young Jersey milkers.

“When we decided to restock in 2009, we just couldn’t see the benefits of going back into the Friesians.

“They were very dear at the time, and had taken a backward step. They’d lost

that nice heifer with a snug udder,” Craig says.

“We decided to give the Jerseys a go because we needed to be on that higher pay rate with the fat and protein components.

We are more than pleased with the way we can maintain them without huge inputs. They are calmer and easier to handle. They don’t eat as much, but they still just chug along. No matter how dry or wet it is, they seem to be just able to hold on to themselves.”

However, the past six months have been another difficult period with dry weather and rising prices for grain, freight and electricity. The 42-cent return per litre is below the 46-cent cost of production. “Everything else seems to go up, but the milk price goes down,” Craig says. He wants government to ensure that the milk price is always more than the cost of production.

“We are happy to break even in he tough times and flourish in the good times,” he says. “But now we never ever get forward. We may just have to shut down again.”

The farm currently supplies up to 600,000 litres a year to Bega Cheese. “We are a small dairy and we do all the

work ourselves. Most farmers around here are doing 12-16 hours a day. We never complain about doing it seven days a week, but it would be nice to be able to buy groceries to put on the table that you’ve worked hard for that week.

“I enjoy breeding cows and milking cows and knowing what the cows are doing. It’s not about the money. It’s about being able to do things properly.”

Breeding for showing“We made a decision when we went

back in with the Jerseys that we wanted to breed for the show scene.

“We are trying to produce Jerseys that are not over-big – just a nice size with a good front end, really good feet and legs, and really trying to put that perfect udder on her.

“We have only been four years breeding Jerseys, and we are happy with the way we can stand up at the front of the line with some really good Jersey breeders. We can’t be the class of some of them, but we’re quite happy. We’ve got some sensational heifers coming through and we expect more success.

“Everybody likes to milk a cow they enjoy looking at. They are going to be

buying them more. We cannot survive purely off milk. We have to be selling heifers and we have to have them top line to get people in to buy them.”

Salvation Jerseys first showed in Sydney at Easter last year, winning a class with a two-year-old heifer.

The O’Meara girls had had a Jersey bought for them, which was a 2012 reserve champion.

“This year, we had heifers that were finishing first, second, third and fourth,” Craig says. A cow the stud had bought was reserve intermediate champion. His daughters’ cow was third in her class.

The girls – Sophie aged 10, Ruby 9, Ivy 7, Fiona 6, Evelyn 4, Vanessa 3, Naomi 2, and Diana born in April this year – enjoy showing their cow. Craig says the girls tell him what they want her bred with, and whether they want her flushed or joined.

“We pretty much involve them in everything. They learn to be confident around cows. They then progress at their own want. They only want to do more.”

So does their dad: “What happened at the Sydney show inspires me to keep going.”

He was moved by the Wilson family’s warm reaction to the historic double

clean sweep by its Shirlinn stud. His daughter Ruby bugged him for

hours to see the Shirlinn Jerseys. Craig was impressed when Brian Wilson had “all the time in the world” to answer all the questions of a nine-year-old girl.

Craig thinks the no-stress temperament of Jerseys might rub off on their breeders.

“The future of dairy farming really is in jeopardy because we are all struggling so much,” he says. “If we are going to make it through it will be from everybody supporting everybody. That tight community feeling is what keeps everybody going.”

He just wishes the broader community would say no to dollar-a-litre milk. “We need city people to understand that cheap isn’t always better for the producer,” he says.

“If you enjoy your fresh milk and having it in your coffee, then a dollar a litre just doesn’t cut it.”

“We have to get people to focus on where it comes from, not just the price. We want the best for our farm and our cows, and we have to pay top dollar for that. “We need to be paid what our product is worth.”

8 Jersey Journal – July/August 2013

South Africa - Badger now over 100,000 doses and around 50,000 doses of ASTOUND.

The shipment of semen that was sent to South Africa in March 2013 contained the 100,000th dose of BADGER semen and the next shipment of the last ASTOUND semen qualified for export will take his total to around 50,000 doses exported to South Africa. Beular Taranak Badger (BADGER) and Molly Brook Berretta Fabulous (ASTOUND) have been influential in creating the awareness and demand for Australia proven genetics.

In recent years BADGER and ASTOUND have been among the most popular bulls for South African Jersey breeders.

BADGER is in high demand as his daughters are exactly what South African breeders require. They have great frame with substance and this is combined with good milk flow with yield. With his diverse pedigree he is the ideal bull to be used over the predominant North American Population. It is not just the frames and robustness he delivers with production, BADGER also has the ability to sire outstanding type, functional dairy cows that are a pleasure to milk and will be around for a long productive life.

Mollybrook Berretta Fablous – ASTOUND is arguably the best type sire in the history of the breed. He has lead the breed with outstanding type proofs in Australia, New Zealand, the US and South Africa. His daughter in South Africa have created great excitement amongst breeders with many describing the ASTOUND daughter as close to their ideal dairy cow. ASTOUND was ranked number 1 for a number of proof runs and his daughter HI-Klass Fabs Robin was the highest genetic merit cow in South Africa.

The international profile of the Australian Jersey has increased at a dramatic rate, with Australian proven

genetics becoming popular in many countries.

Australian Genetics are now exports to four main dairy regions. Australian proven Jerseys have ranked amongst the best available in South Africa for many years. Sterling Sires are promoting the Australian product into Europe, Fred Bowman has introduced Australian genetics into South America over the last twelve months and the recent signing of a distribution agreement with Taurus in the United States is an exciting development for the Australian genetics.

What’s driving the growing interest in the Australia’s Jersey population?

Australian Jersey cows are unique as they have;• The ability to forage with pasture the staple diet.• The Australian cow has the ability to effectively

increase production with feed supplements.• Australian breeders have developed a functional

dairy cow with outstanding type.• Australian cows have been designed for a

production and profit farming environment, driving genetic improvement.

• Our cows have a long productive life with the ability to produce over many lactations.

• We have maintained the focus on management and herd health traits.

Australian farmers have demanded this unique combination of desired traits for many years. International markets have now recognised the Australian cow is the best fit for varied farming conditions.

Australia’s open breeding programme, using only the best of international genetics and then screening them for our farming environment has helped evolve the Australian Jersey cow of today. Australian breeders should be proud of their contribution to the advancement of the breed.

Australian Jersey genetics are being sort after as they tick all the boxes. Our cow is being recognised for her;

production, longevity, management traits, health traits, adaptability, outstanding type and profitability.

Genetics Australia’s bulls are noted for their total performance. Our bulls have the ability to produce cows with great functional type, they are easy to manage, efficiently convert feed into milk solids and make their owner proud.

Genetics Australia delivers generation after generation on second crop performance. Breeders have confidence in the non-bias proofs, delivered to the industry by Genetics Australia shareholders.

Rob Walker visited Australia a few years ago to inspect our farming conditions and asses if Australian Jersey genetics had something to offer. Rob has now used over 1,250 doses of BADGER semen in his herd.

Rob shared some of his thoughts on his Australian visit with Tim Arnot on the Semark web site.

“A visit that exceeded my expectations on cows and people. “

“An industry that just survived the worst droughts in memory, but driven by people that have got staying power and strength. That`s exactly what I see in the Australian type cow. If you drive past herds the capacity and dairy strength is remarkable. Most of the farmers use the highest APR (Australian Profit Ranking) bulls and some old favorites. A lot of the farms are one man or family operations where the wife

or father still helps. Australian farmers are hands on and versatile, they demand no fuss cows.

We drove long distances and saw a variety of Jersey and Holstein farms. It was good to have time to walk into herds and saw some of the older bull’s daughters. It gave me confidence to see the quality of these cows, the honest and commercial way they are tested.”

Northern Lights tops $10,000by Dairy Livestock Services

A huge crowd of Jersey Breeders from all over the World were at the Echuca Racecourse for the 7th Annual Northern Lights Sale on Monday evening 20th May.

“An industry that just survived the worst droughts in memory, but driven by people that have got staying power and strength. That`s exactly what I see in the Australian type cow. If you drive past herds the capacity and dairy

strength is remarkable.” – Rob Walker

12 Jersey Journal – July/August 2013

Do you have straws for any of these bulls? We need your help!

Jersey Australia members can help increase Australia’s sire reference population which is used to calculate Australian Breeding Values based on genomics – ABV(g)s.

You can help by reviewing the following list which details bulls that will improve the reference population. Finding these bulls is like looking for a needle in a hay stack. But it’s worth the effort: increasing the reference population means more reliable ABV(g)s.

If you have straws for any of these sires, please consider donating a straw to us for genotyping and inclusion in the Australian sire reference population. If you have any of these bulls stored in your AI tank, contact Jersey House or the Australian Dairy Herd Improvement Scheme (ADHIS) for details on how to make a contribution.

Jersey breeders have been proactive in contributing in the past. The project partners thank you, and hope you will help again.

For more information contact Peter Williams, ADHIS 0448 001 819 or Jersey House 03 9370 9105.
