ForewordThis translation has been made based on th e original Japanese IndustrialStandard revised by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry throughdeliberations at th e Japanese Industrial Standards Committee, as th e resultof proposal for revision of Japanese Industrial Standard submitted by JapanFluid Power Association (JFPA)/Japanese Standards Association (JSA) withthe draft being attached, based on th e provision of Article 12 Clause 1 ofth e Industrial Standardization Law applicable to the case of revision by theprovision of Article 14.Consequently JIS B 2408 : 1993 is replaced with this Standard. This revision has been made based on ISOIFDIS 36013: 2002 Fluid powersystems-O-rings-Part 3: Quality acceptance criteria for the purpose ofmaking it easier to compare this Standard with International Standard; toprepare Japanese Industrial Standard conforming with InternationalStandard; and to propose a draft of an International Standard which is basedon Japanese Industrial Standard.Attention is drawn to the possibility that some parts of this Standardmay conflict with a patent right, application for a patent after opening toth e public, utility model right or application for registration of utility modelafter opening to the public which have technical properties. The relevantMinister and the Japanese Industrial Standards Committee are notresponsible for identifying the patent right, application for a patent afteropening to the public, utility model right or application for registrationof utility model after opening to the public which have th e said technicalproperties.

    JAPANESE INDUSTRIAL STANDARD JIS B 2408 : 2005

O-ring-Qual i ty acceptance cri ter ia

Introduction This Japanese Industrial Standard has been prepared based on thefirst edition of ISOIFDIS 3601-3 Fluid power systems-O-rings-Part 3: Quality ac-ceptance criteria published in 2002 with some modifications of the technical contents. The portions given sidelines or dotted underlines are the matters modified from

the original International Standard. A list of modifications with the explanations isgiven in Annex (informative).1 Scope This Standard defines and classifies surface imperfections on O-rings andspecifies maximum acceptable limits for these imperfections.

Remarks 1 This Standard only specifies the visual quality acceptance criteriaof O-rings and is not intended to be used, by itself, to evaluate theconformity of O-rings.

2 The International Standard corresponding to this Standard is as follows. In addition, symbols which denote the degree of correspondence in

th e contents between the relevant International Standard and JIS areIDT (identical), MOD (modified), and NEQ (not equivalent) accordingto ISOIIEC .Guide 21.ISO/FDIS 3601-3: 2002 Fluid power systems-O-rings-Part 3: Qual-

it y acceptance criteria (MOD)2 Normative reference The following standard contains provisions which, throughreference in this text, constitute provisions of this Standard. I f the indication of theyear of publication is given to the referred standard, only the edition of th e indicatedyear constitutes the provision of this Standard but the revision and amendment madethereafter do not apply. The normative reference without the indication of the yearof coming into effect applies only to the most recent edition (including amendments).

JIS B 0142 Glossary of terms for oil hydraulics and pneumaticsNOTE: IS O 5598: 1985 Fluid power systems and components-Vocabulary is

equivalent to the said standard.3 Terms and definitions For the purposes of this Standard, the terms and definitions given in JIS B 0142 and the following apply.3.1 backrind longitudinal imperfection in which the rubber adjacent to the flashline shrinks below the level of the moulding and has a U-like or W-like cross sectionwith the flash frequently being ragged or torn ~ ~ ~ . ~ .. ~ g ~ ~ ~ } )3.2 combined flash combination of offset, flash and parting line projection3.3 excessive t r imming flattened and often roughened area around the innerand/or outer diameters of an O-ring, caused by th e trimming process (see figures 2Aand 2B) ............................ .

Information: This is caused by incomplete filling of the mould cavity and byentrapment of air.

    d 1 O-ring inside diameter;d2 O-ring cross-section diameter.

5 Grades5.1 Grade N (general) This grade identifies acceptance criteria for O-rings intendedfor general usage applications.5.2 Grade S (special) This grade identifies acceptance criteria for O-rings intendedfor applications requiring a higher level of quality/precision with respect to dimensionaltolerances o f surface imperfections.

For example, aerospace applications are covered by this grade.

    3B 2408: 2005

6.1 The a-ring surfaces shall be free from cracks, ruptures, blisters or other imperfections for which the limits are greater than those given in attached table 1 whenthe unstretched ring is viewed under a x 2 illuminated magnifier viewer. Other methodsmay be used by agreement between the manufacturer and the user.6.2 There shall be no foreign material embedded in the surface visible under theviewing conditions of 6.1.6.3 Flow marks, non-fills and indentations within the limits of attached table 1 shallnot be allowed ifa) there are more than three in any 25 mm length of circumference;b) they interconnect;c) there are more than three which are separated from each other by a distance

which is less than th e maximum limiting dimensions of such imperfection.6.4 There shall be no flow marks which are essentially radially orientated.6.5 The surface resulting from any excessive trimming shall be smoothly blended.7 Identification sta tement (reference to this Standard) Manufacturers arestrongly recommended to use th e following statement in test reports, catalogues andsales literature when electing to comply with this Standard.

"Surface imperfection limits are in accordance with J IS B 2408 O-rings-Quality acceptance criteria".
