Was it merely a "word,"and nothing more?

How many are there today whohave any definite and satisfactoryidea as to what is meant in Free-masonry by "The Lost Word?"

It would probably be safe tosay, not one in a thousand.How many of those who havegiven the subject serious thought

and consideration agree in theirconclusions?

very few.But why this uncertainty and

confusion concerning the one thingwhich, above all others, gives mean-ing, or point, or significance to theDegree of a Master Mason?

If assured by competent authorityand on legal evidence, that "TheLost Word" has reference to anancient estate which has been in-creasing in value for many thou-sands of years, until the distributiveshare of each Master Mason todayis worth a million dollars in cash,and that this vast Masonic Estateis now ready for distribution as

The Lost Word Found 1soon as a complete roster of theCraft can be authenticated, howmany Master Masons would havean interest in "The Lost Word"sufficient to see that their nameswere on the roster?

This is too delicate a subject toadmit of speculation, lest injusticemight be done to the real Spiritand Geniusof modern Freemasonry,as well as to the motives whichinspire many individual membersof the Craft.

There is, however, a sufficientreason for the general confusionamong Masons as to the correct

Sir Albert Pike, our wise andrevered Masonic Historian, gives usa hint of it in his "Legenda," inthese words:"What is most worth knowing

in Masonry is never very openlytaught. The symbols are displayed,but they are mute. It is by hintsonly, and these the least noticeableand apparently insignificant, thatthe Initiate is put upon the track ofthe hidden Secret.

"It was never intended that themass of Masons should know themeaning of the Blue Degrees, and

Whatever the real cause may be,certain it is that no single subjectwithin the scope of Blue LodgeMasonry has been invested withmore of real mysticism and occultuncertainty than is that of "TheLost Word."

During the course of his prog-ress through the ceremony of theMaster Mason's Degree, each Initi-ate is directly or indirectly informed:

2. That at the time of the build-ing of King Solomon's Temple it

6. That a "Substitute" thereforwas adopted "until future ages mightfind out the right," and the initiateis given that "Substitute." Thissubstitute, as every Master Masonknows, is a "word," in the ordi-

was it that was "lost" to Free-masonry and Freemasons by thedeath of the Grand Master,Hiram?Was it a mere word, composed

of syllables, which can be vocal-ized and pronounced, as can the"Substitute"?Think for a moment: At the

time referred to there were threeGrand Masters, in a Masonic sense,who were directly interested in andidentified with "the building of theTemple." These were King Solo-

If the thing referred to was amere word, all three of these GreatMasons must have been in posses-sion of it.

In that event it could not havebeen "lost" to the Craft by thedeath of but one of them. Itwould have required the death ofall three to have lost such a word.To get over this impossible ob-stacle, the ingenious suggestion hasbeen offered, that it was a word ofthree syllables, or parts, and thateach one of these Grand Mastershad one part of it only. In this

The Lost Word Found 19case neither one alone could giveit, but it would require all three;and that this was the reason for theGrand Master's reply, that it couldnot be given "except in the pres-ence of" the other two and himself.The inadequacy of this suggestionbecomes apparent when we remem-

ber that the very first time thesethree Grand Masters came togetherand pronounced the word, each onewould thereafter know the wholeword, and anyone of them couldthereafter pronounce it.

It thus becomes clear that thething that was "lost" through thedeath of the Widow's Son was not

There is, however, a consistentmeaning for the term "Word,"which has been and still is in use,in both Masonry and the GreatSchool back of Masonry, and onewhich meets all the conditionsperfectly.

That meaning was and is "AnInstruction."At the time referred to and prior

When these logical and legiti-mate results are fully realized, thatis, earned by persistent applicationand work, what is the net result?The answer to this question is, aMaster.

Let us remember that we are notdealing in "compliments." Wehave assumed that the work is real,seriously undertaken and persistentlyfollowed, and if the results are notsubstantial, then is the whole thinga farce, a delusion, and a snare; aprofanation of holy things (if there

this serious aspect of Freemasonryand pride themselves on their ownintelligence while shrugging theirshoulders at the credulity of thosewho take the subject seriously.

serious aspect being true, the penaltythus paid by the writer for findingsome few glimpses of the Truthand endeavoring to help others tofind the same, is small indeed, muchas he values the respect of his fel-low craftsmen.

It would be perfectly legitimatefor the student to inquire "Whatevidence have you that the 'GreatSchool' and any real Masters existat all?"

Passing by the traditions of theLodge and the philosophy of Ma-sonic Symbolism for the moment, Iam ready to admit that the Man

36 The Lost Word Foundand the account he gives of theexistence and present status of theGreat School must FILL THE BILLThe man himself must be requiredto show his credentials, not in high-sounding titles, "patents" in mys-terious characters, signed byweknow not whom.

But his credentials must be ofmanhood and mastership intrinsic-ally possessed; of character, of wis-dom, of beneficence and of lovingkindness. Are not these the "de-signs on the trestleboard" ? Andis not the real Grand Master onewho can furnish them "at sight" or"on demand"?

such credentials, and so representingthe Great School, is worthy of, andentitled to a very careful considera-tion, a conscientious examination tosee if he can really FILL THE BILL.

In the first place, "does he seeknotoriety?" Is he out for "graft"?Has he anything to gain personally?Does he seek to exploit us? Hashe unworthy ulterior motives?These are all intelligent and legiti-mate questions, and he who doesnot ask them is likely to be de-ceived any day, by any mere pre-tender, just as scores of people aredeceived and imposed on every day.

SIGNS of the Master in the Authorof "The GreatWork." ThatWorkis his trestleboard. The designstherein revealed and the plans forthe construction of the Temple ofthe Human Soul therein set forthare sufficiently clear, intelligent andexplicit to enable any intelligentman (particularly if he be a justand upright Mason) to judge andmeasure his work. The book waswritten, beyond all question, withthis identical design and for thisspecific purpose; and knowing theman as I do, and having the honorand the blessedness of five years

Spiritualism has demonstratedthe existence of a mass of verifiedphenomena outside of physics andkinetics and has extended theboundaries of Consciousness a planeabove (" supraliminal" ) and aplane below ( "subliminal " ) thatpreviously recognized.The various religions of the day

Under all these conditions andsigns of the times, here comes onewho declares that the human Soulis a FACT. "There is no death,"but transition only. Man may be-come "Master" of Life and Deathand thus demonstrate his power to"travel in foreign countries," thatis, outside the physical body, andso demonstrate the persistence of

Back of and beyond all thesesurface struggles and these warringarmies lies the essential problem ofhuman life.

Other armies fight for temporalpower and earthly dominion, but

But in the real issue, the ques-tion is, whether man shall live ATALL. Is he an ephemeral phenom-enon, a passing show ? Or is hislife real and enduring? Does hesurvive the cataclysms of time?Does he inherit the " Kingdom ofHeaven?" May he achieve Immor-tality?A large majority of reputedly in-

It is this "agnostic" gnosticism,this dogmatic nihilism, against whichSir Oliver Lodge, the great phys-ical scientist, in the name of scienceprotests.Modern thought and the more

advanced Scientists have workedup to this point and found an opendoor, though aside from subjectivephenomena (mediumship) they haveno exact theorem. They know nothow to proceed.

Think what it would alsomean if that affirmative answercould tell us where, and how, andunder what conditions life persistsbeyond the grave, and exactly howconditions and the life lived here,

Until the present time, the worldhad no nomenclature, no languagein which the "things of the spirit"could be conveyed to the childrenof men.

It is not now the inability toapprehend as it was then. Todaynothing could bar the way but theunwillingness to listen, the crassmaterialism that prejudges, scoutsand denies without examination.
