NAIDOC National Award 2017

Congratulations to Auntie Faye on her award for Female Elder of the Year 2017! Faye Carr is a Yuggera Elder from Ipswich in Queensland, who has overcome a tough childhood to become a strong advocate and leader in her community. Passionate about sharing her culture and knowledge with her community, Faye has been contributing to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people since the 1960’s. Faye was involved in establishing the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Service, the Kambu Progress Association and the Kambu Aboriginal and Islander Health Service to deliver important legal, housing, recreational and health services to Ipswich and broader Queensland. Among many accolades, Faye was honoured with Ipswich Citizen of the Year in 2016. Always an advocate for her people, Faye recently met with Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and other key stakeholders to raise awareness about the impacts of domestic violence on women and families. Congratulations Auntie Faye and thank you for your continuous advocacy and support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and the Hymba Yumba community.

Congratulations to Liworaji Aboriginal Corporation for the opening of their new premises at 60 East St, Ipswich. Also announced at the opening was that Ipswich City Council will be naming a park after Aunty Faye Carr, so watch this space! Liworaji are supporters of the community, so if you need advice and/or support with health, mental health, domestic violence, housing, education, volunteering or anything else please give contact the wonderful staff at Liworaji.

NAIDOC at Hymba Yumba

Hymba Yumba held our NAIDOC celebrations on the 23rd of June. It was an amazing day full of fun events for all. The highlight being a fantastic Kup-Murri feed organised by Mr Leroy and Uncle Justin as well as some willing helpers. It was an early 4am start for all the cooks, but the end result was certainly worth it.

Respects Day Senior: On the 21st of June, the seniors had a great day out at the Ice Rink. There were plenty of sore knees and hands at the end of the day, along with plenty of smiles.

SPORT

Basketball Game: On the 15th of June, Hymba Yumba was participated in a Basketball competition organised by the Murri School. We sent our seniors to the event and they did very well! Even though the scoreboards weren’t in our favour, I can honestly say how proud I was of every single jarjum that attended. Special mention to Day Day who was selected for the student vs teacher game at the end of the day. Well done Day Day! – Mr. Richards.

Touch Game: On the 22nd of June, a senior touch side led by the very capable Khaleb attended a touch carnival held by Inala Flexible Learning Centre. It was quite a warm day and there was some tough competition. Everyone played very well and we made it to the semi-finals. Darnell played exceptionally well and showed great skills and awareness on the field. – Mr. Richards.

Rugby: Lloyd McDermott Rugby Development Team Inc. were given a great opportunity for Indigenous Youth to experience the Australia vs Italy Test Saturday 24th June at the Suncorp Stadium. As part of the ARU and Indigenous Rugby partnerships, ARU has kindly provided Indigenous youths to volunteer their services to help fund raise and promote Indigenous Rugby to the wider community with the opportunity to experience rugby union at its elite best. The day was long and hot but thanks to the involvement of Hymba Yumba staff, a handful of dedicated and highly respectful students toughed it out and helped raise money towards Lloyd McDermott Rugby. Each volunteer on the day were given food, a shirt and tickets to attend the main event.

Thankfully, Australia came out trumps and won the event! On behalf of Lloyd McDermott Rugby Development Team Inc. I would like to thank all our volunteers for their support and time promoting and raising the profile for Indigenous Rugby.

Springing to New Heights! Congratulations to Ella from year 1 who represented at the Gatton Invitational Gymnastics Level 2 competition and was successful in gaining 1 silver and 3 bronze. Well Done Ella!
