JICREG: What it is
• JICREG (Joint Industry Committee for Regional Press Research) provides a readership currency for the regional press, and includes data on virtually all regional and local newspapers in GB with audited circulation figures.
JICREG structure
JICREG is an independent limited company and is run by a board of directors made up of nominees from:
• IPA on behalf of advertising agencies• ISBA on behalf of advertisers• NS & independent regional newspaper groups.
Reporting to the board is a user group, a technical forum, and various specialist sub-committees.

Why we need it
JICREG arose out of agencies’ requests for a detailed planning tool for the regional press. Their need was driven by:
• The requirement to identify the strength of competing papers in any area.
• The growth of local media opportunities.• The desire for an industry-led audience
currency.
Readership data
Readership data are generated by applying readers per copy (RPC) figures to circulation breakdowns at postcode sector level. The RPC figures are generated either from market research, undertaken to JICREG guidelines, or by using JICREG models.
These models have been developed following detailed analysis of all available research and demographic details and are regularly updated to ensure they reflect current research findings.
Why is JICREG so helpful?
• JICREG provides audience data for all GB regional papers with audited circulation figures.
• It is a trusted and widely used currency.
• Geographical flexibility enables any area to be analysed.
• It links to numerous other regional media planning systems.
How to access JICREG data
• Basic data on papers and pre-set areas are available via free internet database.
• Jic-in-a-box subscribers can access more detailed data via internet database.

They can also be used to show individual newspaper coverage of catchment areas.

Newspaper coverage example
Brad Intelligence
Brad Intelligence can provide rates, contacts, historical trend data and other useful information on all newspapers in any area.
Schedule analysis
Jic-in-a-box can be liked to all schedule analysis software packages, Telmar, IMS, and BMRB Choices, enabling the net reach and frequency of any regional press schedule to be established against any target audience within any area.
Schedule analysis example
UFO
UFO is a system that enables the readership of national daily and Sunday newspapers to be included on Jic-in-a-box reports, and in the files transferred to schedule analysis software. Very useful to demonstrate how national and regional schedules work together or the value of up weighting a national press schedule with regional press titles.
In order to subscribe to UFO, companies have to be current subscribers to Jic-in-a-box and the National Readership Survey.
