“Crop Stop” is a joint venture between Clemson University and the College of Charleston. It is a component of the South Carolina farm-to-school initiative, wherein schools invest in their local communities with their food dollars, allowing for locally

healthy habits to take root. (CropStop)

Next to the Long Branch Baptist Church, Greenville, SC

Our Mission is to design and construct the porch part of Crop Stop kitchen for Mill village farms at above location.

Since our site is 4 hours drive away from our shop. We decided to prefabricate most building components and transport them to site to assemble. In that case, we can spend least time on a remote site.

Everything started from this spot, where i took this sketch. That was a sunny afternoon. I was wondering around the site. Suddenly, I saw this little pocket of open space was hidden in the middle of three big trees from far away. They formed a “skylight” with their canopies. Light poured down on the ground. Those spot light were jumping and dancing around, looked like they were alive. I felt a strong shocking wave of happiness and warm in my heart. Then something came to my mind.

The plan layout following the logic of tree branches surround middle trunk.

Living room has linear oppening to let light in to give a feeling of forests light.

On the top of all, Central skylight imitates the void created by three trees that I saw.

The second phase, studio was asked to delocation from previous site. And by using prefabrication, our house should be able to duplicate. I decided to condense circulation and let other rooms be regular box and surround central skylight.

Knights of Columbus Charleston building has been used by the Catholic fraternal organization since 1907. Knights consider the upgrade of their facility so that they can open up more opportunity for commercial use to increase revenue, which will contribute to charity.

By open up part of west facade, we made a chance to allow outdoor scene get into building. But due to code limitation, we decided to use a wall full of plants to block opening between properties and also create new scene for inside building

this museum design. The building has two cores and a middel atrim. With ramp all the way around, gallery space is bond together both horizontally and vertically. the ramp create a outside-gallery circulation, and at the same time it also provides a inside-gallery circulation.

Experimental 3d printing practice. The early version of two chunk of building.

52

Page 56: jianfei Shen 2015 Architecture Portfolio (Selected works)

After weeks of development, I combined two cores into one, and two parts of building together as well. The reason for doing that was to keep gallery space not too many fragments. and centralize core to maxmium the area that could be used for galleries.

Urban design

The Neighborhood around Lee St was once separated by John P. Grace Memorial Bridge ramp. But after new cooper river bridge built, old bridges were demolished. It left a scar at this area of city. The land is still empty. In this project, our mission was to mend and re-active neighborhood.

City structure is all kinds of components

characters within a city.

Our proposal has to respond to the existing urban environment and city structure

Site is part of largest residential area, neighborhood are widely spread. But site itself is empty.

Site is really close to city core, where main activities in the city happen. But condition now is that site abandoned and no activities at all, wasted land.

Our proposal has to re-active this area and hopeful plug area back into city core.

RESPONSE MEND RE-ACTIVE

61

Site is three directions surrounded by highway/bridge structures. Visually and physically isolated from the rest part of peninsula

Our proposal has to adopt the condition and be creative. Try to design a new

Upper east side of peninsula doesn't have any main street to connect from east to west.

st. Try to build up a corridor that link the core to east side water front.

Charleston is full of water front and green open space. They formed a network around Charleston. There is one on our site originally

Our proposal has to take advantage of green public space network. Make a new contribution to it by creating another Charleston open public space.

62

Page 66: jianfei Shen 2015 Architecture Portfolio (Selected works)

After bridge removed, the empty space created a void between the two neighborhoods. The Void itself become an invisible barrier. The huge area of land has no activity.

Parti sketch shows the simple solution is to create new space in between too neighborhood edges.

63

Page 67: jianfei Shen 2015 Architecture Portfolio (Selected works)

To start with, we focused on neighbor-hood edges that are on both sides of the “scar”. There might be still some relationship between two edges even they have already been separated for years.

Then we decided to develop new edges to form a new void. Instead

neighborhood, we kept most part of site still green public open space. We intended to celebrate the past of this land.

64

Page 68: jianfei Shen 2015 Architecture Portfolio (Selected works)

The question is what principle should drive us through the entire design. We started from observing the original open space around site. If our goal is to create a new open space that can activate the entire area, then this new open space should draw all the open activity and space to one.
