Νϖ∀∀ Νµµ Νϖ∀∀A diverse and inconsistent inner life together with absolutely outstanding courage, will and determination. Intellectualism together with wildness and unboundedness. Most probably, there could not be abetter and more complex personality to provide a strong inspiration for creation of a music or even better music-theater piece than Milena Jesenská, a Czech journalist, writer, editor, translator and - hero, recognized as Righteous Among the Nations.
The daughter of a leading Prague university professor and dental surgeon, Jan Jesensky, she lost her mother when she was 16, which led to her rather unrestrained youth. She would organize walksthrough Prague and on one occasion she met with Max Brod and Franz Werfel in Café Arco. She was often seen in the German-Jewish quarter, where she would associate with the cream of the artisticsociety.

The history of my love to you, Ernst, is so complicated... And now, it's such that I can't go away, I will probablynever be able to, I - no, words are just stupid.
But I am still looking for a possibility for myself, still looking for a solution, still looking for what's good and right.

This event, together with her marriage to Ernst Pollak, a Jewish intellectual and literary critic, led toa major quarrel with her father. He even had her interned in an asylum, but surmounting numerous obstacles she managed to get out of it and then cut all communication with her family.
Her marriage to Ernst didn’t last too long though, just until 1925 and she later met and married the avant-garde Czech architect Jaromír Krejcar. What followed was the happiest time of her life. Shewrote for leading Czech newspapers and magazines as well as supported the communist party for a while, however soon resigned her membership because of her criticism against Stalin. Du še, tě šímse, nakrátký čas, krát ký čas, srdcesevřené, pravdi vé. Du še tě ším se, srdce, sevřené,pravdi vé.
In 1919, Milena discovered The Stoker, a short story by Prague writer Franz Kafka, and wrote him to ask for permission to translate it from German to Czech. The letter launched an intense andincreasingly passionate correspondence. Milena and Franz Kafka met twice: they spent four days in Vienna together and later a day in Gmünd. Eventually, Kafka broke off the relationship and theiralmost daily communication ceased abruptly in November 1920.
They meant a lot to each other. In 1922 and 1923, they exchanged a few more letters and at the end of his life, Kafka also turned over to Milena his diaries. Milena's translation of The Stoker was a firsttranslation of Kafka's writings into Czech (and in fact, into any foreign language); later she translated two other short stories by Kafka and also texts by Hermann Broch, Franz Werfel, Upton Sinclair, and many others. ∑

Shortly after the annexation of Sudetenland by the Germans in the fall of 1938, a great number of refugees, especially Jewish, came to Prague. Milena was one of those estimating the next politicalcourse and encouraged her Jewish fellows to cross the border to Poland and get to the west.
When the German invasion paralyzed the country in spring of 1939, she, together with her very good friend, a German student Count Joachim von Zedtwitz (also recognized as Righteous Among theNations), learned about an escape route that had been prepared for Czech pilots wanting to flee to France, and started their incredibly courageous rescuing mission. Milena's Prague apartment becamea temporary way station for those in flight, she took care of them and supplied them with food and the false papers they would need on the journey.∑

Shortly before her death, Milena, knowing her end was close, asked her fellow prisoner for a favor. Once the war is over, shewas to tell everything to Milena's family: how Milena lived, suffered, her thoughts about her daughter and the future, herwishes and fears.
As a gift to her family, Milena enclosed a little elephant, made of a toothbrush.
