The month of February is filled with expressions of love. In the world of education the priority of instilling a love for learning remains high in importance. In a recent read, I was reminded that fostering a love for learning goes beyond acquiring a knowledge base of factual information. It encompasses helping others to find and develop their interests and hobbies. It includes encouraging others to establish and express their own opinions. Most importantly, a love for learning is aiding others in finding success in each of their unique learning styles. At J.H. Rose High, I know that staff, parents and community do a great deal in providing every aspect of learning for our students that allow them to develop that love. Last year, several Rose theatre students participated in a filming to promote WNCTs anti-bullying project. Recently, we were notified that the spot received an Emmy Award nomination for best promotion. Also in the arts, the Eastern Regional Jazz Auditions were held. Only thirty-eight students from the eastern third of the state are selected for this honor, with thirteen of those slots being won by our very own JH Rose Jazz Band students. Additionally, JHR received notification from the National English Honor Society that two students had winning essays in the recent Intellectual Freedom Challenge. Our Mock Trial continues with their success as their teams advance to the state competition following their recent regional competition wins. Our Computer Science Club came in 2nd in North Carolina in the US Cyber Patriots Competition and will advance to the Southeast regionals. It is truly amazing to see how our studentslove for learning comes to fruition and, in return, we learn from them. Lifelong learning at its best. Over the past five years, students in Honors Ceramics have participated in a very

special project. Mrs. Caracci’s students choose teachers with whom they feel a connection, and create mosaics for them

to hang outside their classrooms. The students first interview the teachers to find out their interests and

hobbies in order to personalize the mosaic. They work on the mosaic all semester, as it takes time to

create each piece and put it all together. The finished products are incredible, and each one is so

unique and perfect for the teacher it honors! Be sure to look for these mounted on the walls outside

the classrooms of the lucky teachers who have them. The creativity, time, and effort that goes into these projects is outstanding. These mosaics not only help our ceramics students practice their skills, but also show appreciation for our awesome teachers and beautify our hallways!

The  Advisory  Council  Congratulates Ariel Tyson

as  the  January  Recipient  of  the   Rampant  Spirit  Award

The  Spirit  Award  originated  with  Mr.  Langley  and  continues  with  Ms.  Jacobson,  both  strong  advocates  of  school  spirit.  Spirit  can  be  defined  by  the  “loyalty  and  feeling  of  inclusion  in  the  social  history or collective essence  of  an  institution  or

group,  such  as  in school  spirit.”  The  Rampant  Spirit  Award  is  given  to  the  teacher,  employee  or  person  who  best                            defines Rose  school  spirit. The  Advisory  Council  every  month  presents  an  individual  who  they  feel  displays  school  pride  and  shows  students  the  importance  of  it.  The  Rampant  Spirit recipient believes  in  J.H.  Rose  and  all  that  it  has  to  offer

every  student  who  walks  through  our  halls.

We are pleased to present the Rampant Spirit Award for February to Ariel Tyson of the Social Studies Department. Ms. Tyson is in her fourth year of teaching and second year at Rose. She began her teaching career at Rose as an intern for Stephanie Noles. Ms. Tyson is originally from Connecticut, however her family moved to Greenville when she was in high school. Ms. Tyson graduated from ECU. Ms. Tyson currently teaches World History and is an advisor for Rho Kappa, the social studies honor society. She also helps with the Clothing Closet, which is a maker space available during Smart Block that facilitates sewing projects. Ms. Tyson recently became a Certied Teacher in Learning Focus, which is an innovative approach to implementing the Common Core curriculum. Ms. Tyson is being recognized for all of the great things she contributes to the Rose community, but in particular for her work as a “Key BT.” This is a Pitt County Schools program designed for highly effective beginning teachers to train and support other beginning teachers. Key BTs help with orientation, making sure new teachers have the training and resources they need, and act as an advocate for beginning teachers. Being an effective Key BT requires many extra hours in addition to Ms. Tyson’s classroom teaching. Ms. Tyson’s dedication to the teaching profession promotes the success of fellow educators as well as the students at JH Rose.
