Terrain and Planner’s notes

Open sand dunes with some fences, generally low lying with a maximum rise of approx. 10m and with some extremely intricate areas. Runnability is variable from very fast to tough and is hindered in some areas by scratchy shin high vegetation. Gaiters or other similar leg protection is therefore highly recommended.

Page 6: JHI/NIOC - Saturday 24 - niorienteering.org.uk

The area is used for Military training. It is important that any strange objects are not interfered with and reported to event officials or range control.

As a result of the military training, paths (often formed initially by landrovers) change frequently. Whilst much effort has been made to ensure that the indication of paths on the map is up to date, please be aware that interpretation as to whether old paths should remain mapped is subjective. Note that a combination of the indistinct path symbol and a strip of yellow open land symbol has been used to represent grassy vehicle tracks. Where a path such as this is shown on the map, running on the path will be faster than the surrounding terrain.

Vegetation on the dunes varies from relatively light shin high scratchy plants to seriously thorny and woody waist high shrubs. Since the shin high vegetation is generally runnable only particularly thick areas are indicated on the map by green stripes. Both the wide spaced and narrow spaced green stripe symbol has been used to indicate varying degrees of thickness. Note that only very dense areas of the ground vegetation have been mapped as solid green. The boundaries of such vegetation are generally very vague and therefore competitors are advised not to use edges of vegetation for fine navigation.

As a result of the Military training numerous “props” are present around the dunes and these include posts, signs, plywood animals, buildings and such like (example photos of these can be view on our Event Facebook page). However note that most of these have not been mapped and that some of these may be close to controls. Please also note that there are a number of rectangular target boxes (approx. 0.9m x 2m x 1m deep) sunken into the ground around the competition area. Generally these are visible on the approach however they are too numerous to tape and so care should be taken.

Note that some courses contain half butterfly loops with the same control visited twice from different directions. Take care to complete the loop in the correct direction. Also note that where some courses

Page 7: JHI/NIOC - Saturday 24 - niorienteering.org.uk

have spectator controls near to the finish area, care should be taken to ensure that controls are visited in the correct order.

The area is periodically grazed by both sheep and cattle. Whilst we have made efforts to ensure that any cattle are relocated from the courses during the competition area please be aware that there is the possibility of stray cattle remaining.

Crossing Points and Out of Bounds areas

Where crossing points are shown, competitors are strongly recommended to use them, however they are not compulsory. Where competitors choose to cross fences away from crossing points they must ensure that they do so with their own safety in mind and also so as not to damage the fence. Please report any damaged caused to fences at the finish.

Areas indicated in purple cross hatching on the map are strictly out of bounds.

Weather.

If the weather is bad then the area is very exposed. Please bring suitable clothing. Cagoules may be required.

Crossing Points and Out of Bounds areas

All competitors (apart from 10, 9 & 8) have a compulsory crossing point early in their course and again just before the penultimate control (as they enter the range)- all courses.

Areas indicated in purple cross hatching on the map are strictly out of bounds. When you enter the range near the end of your course you must not cross the solid purple line across the top of the range but you should enter the range through the NW corner.

JHI Relay

1st leg runners will be called to the check-in approx. 15mins before their start. At check-in all runners will be handed a rolled up map- it is strictly forbidden to open maps before the start.

There is no spectator control on the relay so 2nd and 3rd leg runners need to ensure they go through check-in in plenty of time (please see approx. winning times above).

There will be a demonstration of the relay change over etc. approx. 15min before the Girls mass start.

First Aid

A First Aider will be available at the download point in the assembly area.
