As part of the Flagship Chinese Institute, all students are required to live in Willkie Residence Center, operated by IU Residential Programs and Services (RPS). Pictures/floor plans of the FCI dormitory can be

found at this website: http://rps.indiana.edu/willkierescenter.cfml .

    ROOMS

All rooms at FCI will be singles and come furnished with a bed, wardrobe, dresser, and desk. Two singlerooms have a connected shared bathroom and shower. You will be responsible for bringing any otheramenities or appliances. Please review Prohib ited and Restricted Items in The A to Z Guide to ResidenceHall Living before bringing ANYelectrical items.

    APPLICATION

In order to receive a room at FCI, each student must register independently on the RPS website and applyfor housing. If you have not had a contract with RPS in the past 12 months, you will be required to pay a$50 application fee . Below are the steps for the housing application.

    INSTRUCTIONS

    1. Go to www.rps.indiana.edu , select the Online Services tab, and then the Housing Sign-up: NewStudents (Direct Link )

    2. Log in with your IU username and passphrase3. Complete all emergency contact information4. Under Apply for Housing click the Begin Application button under Click here to apply for

Summer Session housing 5. Continue through each element of the list most choices will be predetermined for you

    a. 2. Summer Session Select Flagship Chinese b. 7. Meal Plan Preference Say no to the IMU Meal Plan, t hen choose Cream Standard

($425.00). We recommend all students do this as you will have the option to add on toyour meal plan at a later date.

    6. Once all options are completed, sign the contract presented.7. The final step is to pay a $50 registration fee if you have not had a contract with RPS in the past

Adding to your meal plans is an expense factored into the FCI cost sheet. Also note that your IU ID cardsprovide two different ways to purchase food: I-Bucks and CampusAccess.

I-Bucks are your meal points, good at any RPS Dining Services location around campus. CampusAccess is a type of debit card system that can be used at many local shops, restaurants, and

for laundry. CampusAccess is useful as it provides a safe way for parents to transfer money tostudents without sending a check or cash in the mail. http://www.cacard.indiana.edu/cacard/

    POLICIES

As a student attending the Flagship Chinese Institute, you are required to abide by all the policies listedbelow. Please read each of these closely. Institute policies are non-negotiable and students will be updatedappropriately if a policy changes.

    FCI LANGUAGE PLEDGE

Please remember that the Flagship Chinese Institute is an immersion program and that your languagegrowth and development is enhanced by the Institutes Language Pledge. In your application andsubsequent acceptance to FCI, you signed and agreed to abide by this pledge (see below). To ensure theInstitute quality offered by FCI, accepting this offer binds you to the following commitments:

I will uphold the language pledge governing the institute:

Immersing oneself in a foreign language is a key factor of success in an intensive language institute. Bychecking the box below, I pledge to use no language other than Mandarin Chinese during my entire staywith the program, in all situations and on all occasions except for emergencies or circumstances forwhich the Institute explicitly permits the use of English such as office hours stipulated for specialconsultation in English.

Beginning students with no Mandarin Chinese experience will be granted an initial adjustment period ofa few weeks to allow them to develop basic proficiency. If I am a beginning student, I will progressivelydesist from using English and completely adhere to the language pledge as soon as possible.

This pledge is a serious and binding agreement. I realize that failure to abide by this agreement mayresult in my dismissal from the program, the forfeiture of my tuition, and, in cases where scholarshipshave been awarded, the reimbursement to FCI of scholarship awards from my own personal funds.

Offenses will be addressed as follows.o First offense: written warningo Second offense: one full grade reduction for the course (for example, A to B)o Third offense: expulsion from the program

I further understand the obligations of my summer study extend beyond the traditional classroom setting.

I will be an active participant in all aspects of the summer institute. I understand that it is through active participation in classroom and extracurricular activities held during the week and weekend that mylanguage competency will grow. As such, permission for any absence from any scheduled events must berequested in writing and submitted to the assistant director of the institute at least one week in advance. These absences are granted only for extraordinary circumstances such as health or family emergencies. Ifnecessary, students will be granted a maximum of one absence for personal reasons.

In order to maintain a quality Chinese language learning environment, taking even a short leave of absencefrom FCI is highly discouraged. However if extenuating circumstances require it, a short absence can bearranged. All absences must be approved by the program director and can last no longer than three

    (3) days.* FCI students are only allowed a maximum of one (1) approved leave of absence from theprogram. If you receive approval for an absence from FCI, you will be required to complete all relevantwork you may have missed while gone.
