Mike, can't *iait till you're using the new NLS so that we can do something about bugs that bite you, The only wayto use names other than ,NAME is *name which should take you tothe next occurrence from you the current location, When you use name in file with a number of similar names , it will take you to a seemingly random order unless you output file to new version, (This 1 consider a bud, although some programmers may disagree with me,) Your other question may not be resolvable, but I'll take it to programmer and see what I can find out, How would you like to be one of the first to Use new NLS? Like in a week or so,,. Kidding aside, it would be a great oportunity tor us to tind out about bugsj Anyway, more later, Jim

EJK 4-SEP-74 14:23 31034 Proposal for a 'Library' File

INSTRUCTIONS 1

All new iterrs will be entered in trie following branch called ENTRY, The format will be the following: ib

AUTHOR lbl Title Ibid Periodical Name And Date And Fanes (If A Reprint) lblb Location Iblc

If there are several items to be entered at the same time it is Preferable to type them all in lower case and then xset, rather than to try to type them on the machine properly* lc They should be edited to insure correctness, the AUTHORS set in UPPER CASE and the Rest Of The Material in uppercase initials, Id After insuring correctness each branch should be copied and then the statements containing the author(s) and the title should be transposed, le Where there are two authors the entire original branch should be copied and in that copy only the authors should be transposed using the transpose text command, it Then the items should be copied into the AUTHOR and TITLE branches below, This is best done on the IMLAC, *9 The best procedure is to JUMP to ITEM, bug the first item in the plex under ENTRY using the viewspec x, You can start by moving the branches or groups into the AUTHOR branch, down of course, lh If you complete the authors first, you will be left with the titles, ther you can move the plex containing Just the titles into the TITLES branch, down, Ji

Most of the commands ignore the Content Analyzer in their editing. SRI-ARC 5-SEP-71; 19J56 31039 Newiand Changed Features in TNLS-8 /"Advance Copy;

This is a brief description of the ways in which the new version of NLS differs from the old (NLS-7). It will be discussed at length during the Architect's Seminar, it's being sent to you now in case you might have a chance to look at it before the meeting, for example, on the plane. Have a good trip....

SRI-ARC 5-SEP-7E 19:56 31039 New and Changed Features in TNLS-8 /"Advance Copy]

This is a very brief account of the most important ways in which New TNLS (TNLS-8) is different to use from Old TNLS (TNLS-7). s 1

Questionmark (?) 2

TNLS-8 has useful questionmark facilities. Typing a ? at any point except when you are typing in text will print out the choices available. 2a

Note ? changes its output with.each new step in a command, and its result depends on the recognition scheme you are using. 2b

In Terse and Demand recognition modes (discussed below), "<>" before a command means that you have to type a space to begin that command. 2c

<Control-o> stops printing after a ?. 2d

When the possible command words have printed out, you are still .iust where you were in the command. 2e

HELP 3

<Control-q> puts you into the HELP command and into the HELP data base at a point corresponding to what you were doing in TNLS when you struck the character. HELP provides command syntax and explanations of NLS concepts with menus of related topics. Once you have begun the Help Command, you can continue asking for topics by name or menu number until you hit a command Delete. 3a

Subsystems: E

The commands in NLS have been grouped into subsystems. The commands we use most are in the Base subsystem which includes editing, fil handling, and terminal handling commands, others are available through: Calculator, Sendmail, Identification, Programs, Tenex, and Useroptions. „ Ea

you "Goto" another subsystem. Type G for goto and then first letter of the subsystem's name. Quit returns you to the previous subsystem. Eb

By default the herald is printed in TNLS. It is the first four letters of the subsystem. "<" prints out your suosystem ring. Uc

Execute allows you execute one command in a subsystem with automatic return to the previous subsystem. Ed

Universal Commands 5

Page 46: JHB 27-AUG-74 17*55 31028 Arrangements for the Architect's ... · Arrangements for the (J31028) 27-AUC74 Distribution* /KWACf JHB 27-AUG-74 17*55 31028 Architect's Seminar 17*55*

SRI-ARC 5-SEP-71* 19:56 31039 New and Changed Features in TNLS-3 /"Advance Copy7

The following commands are available in all subsystems: \ 5a

Execute (command in subsystem) 5a2

Quit (subsystem) 5a3

The journal: 6

Execute Journal has become the Sendraail subsystem. The term "Journal" continues to refer to the body of information and dialog built up of submissions. 6a

Whereas Execute Journal had two command levels (& and &&), Sendmail has all commands on the same level. 6b

New Functions

initialize 6cl1

If you want to erase the information you have given in Sendmail commands, use the Olnitialize command to wipe the slate clean. When you have sent an item, the system initializes for you. 6dla

insert status t>ad

Show Status lists what Sendmail Knows at that moment about the item you are sending. Olnsert Status writes that same information at an address you supply. It writes it in the correct format for the Process Sendmail Form command. It is often useful to insert your status in a scratch file, EDIT IT AT LEISURE, and then use the edited statement to send the item via the Process Sendmail Form Command. 6d2a

Unrecorded 6<13

The Unrecorded command will Keep your item from being cataloged. 6d3a

private 6dli.

The Oprivate command Keeps people who were not on the distribution list or the author from reading the journalized item. 6d^a

Public 6d5

The public command reverses the private command; it returns the journal item to general access. 6d5a

Recognitions 7

TNLS-8 has several recognition schemes. The default is terse recognition. You may select one of the other schemes for yourself through the Useroptions subsystem, ASK for "recognition" through the Help command to learn about them. 7a

in terse mode, certain command words are available at any point following each prompt cs. From that list, NLS will recognize and echo the most commonly used command by its first character. To

C? use a command word that is not among the most frequently used, you have to type a space and then type characters until NLS can distinguish. E.g. from the Base Suosystem herald, "S" will evoke "substitute", but to get "Set" you must type "<>se" (where "<>" represents a space) and to get Stop "Ost", 7b

In terse mode, if you type a letter impossible in that spot, TNLS will ring your bell and wait for you to type in a possible letter. I.e. 0 D P will succeed although the command is now output Printer, The extra D will only make the bell ring harmlessly. 7c

New Commandss

Directory Commands: Now you can deal with your file directory in NLS as well as in TENEX. Delete File, Undelete File, and Expunge are NLS commands. Copy Directory copies your directory into a file as a plex. Options in Copy Directory allow you to see the information TENEX has about your files sorted in various ways, Show Directory prints the information without putting it in an NLS file.

Set Commands: With alternatives following Set you can control several parameters. The most frequently used one is what used to be called a content analyzer pattern and is now Set Content. 6b2

Privacy: There are now two systems in NLS for controlling access to files, one is the Protect File command which calls the TENEX protection provisions, based on usernames and groups. The second is the Set private/public command which limits read access to a list of idents. You have to separately edit the list of idents into the origin statement of the file in the following exact format:

AccessList: IDENT IDENT IDENT; 8b3

You may have any number of idents and they must be in upper case. 8b3a

Repetition: 9

By default, the system now returns to the herald after every command, BUT, if you end any command with a Repeat Character the system will carry out the command, return to the herald, and go forward in the same command until it meets a field that is not a command word. The Repeat Character is <control-b> by default. ?a

The system will continue to repeat the command in that .way until you hit command Delete. 9*1

If you hit Repeat Character at command reset, it will repeat your last command out to the first field that is not a command word. You may then step back through the command word-by-word with <tA>. or <Backspace Character>. 9b

Options and Alternatives 10

When several command terms may follow a given command term (as Plex, Branch, etc. may follow Delete) we speak of alternatives. When typing the option character, <control-u> allows you to put in command terms otherwise inaccessible, we speak of options. Options include, for example, the filter step in the Copy commands that replaces Assimilate, and the commands that select various kinds of information in Show Directory. With full prompting on, square brackets, //, inclose optional terms. 10a

Addressing 11

The prompt for addresses is A:. Following A: you can put a "directoryname, filename," separated by commas. You may omit them and default to the directory you are connected to and the current file. After the filename position you may use the intrafile address forms in any order as in TNLS-7- Following A: you may omit the parentheses that normally surround links, 11a

Links

Note that links now differ from addresses only in allowing viewspecs and comments and in normally requiring delimiters. llbl

The prompt T: expects a link in certain situations, for example when it expects a file name. When you type in a link after T:you may omit the parentheses. iioia

Periods in Addresses 11c

Do NOT put periods in front of statement names or numbers or SID's; instead put them in front of structural relationships (i.e. .u .d .b .a or .2d or .5p etc.). llcl

Content Addresses lid

Quotation Marks have replaced square brackets and angle brackets to mark off content searches used in addresses. Thus an address that moves your CM to statement 5, then to its successor, then to the first occurrence of the string "xxx", would have been --.5 s /xxx/ — in the old system and is -- 3 .s "xxxM -- in TNLS-8. lldl

To limit search to a single statement as you did with semi-colons in the old system, you must append "ss" to the address of the string. I.e. to limit the search above to the successor of 5 you would use -- 5 *s "xxx"=s . llala

SRI-ARC 5-SEP-7fc 19556 31039 , New" and Changed Features in TNLS-8 /"Advance Copy#

In the old system you searched for a word rather than a string by inclosing the characters in angle brackets, in the new system you apaend =w. Thus the address of a certain word in a file of mine is <vannouhuys, onetest, "cryptobiotic"sw>

& and @ Meaning File Return and Return

",fr" has repalced "&", and n.r" has repalced

Prompting

You can set prompting in one of three modes: Full, Partial, or Off, The default is partial. Partial does not show options and some alternatives. The complete list of prompts is:

C: calls for a command Word

A: calls for an Address,

T: calls for you to type something in, e,g. free text, or an ident.

OK: calls for confirmation of the command or a field within a command, usually CA or REPEAT (<control-b>)*

CA: calls for a command accept, <control-d> functions as command accept and by default carriage return does so as well,

Y/N: calls for "y" for "yes" or "n" for "no" in commands like substitute where NLS wants to know if you want to repeat a specification step,

/;, square brackets indicate that you have t,o use the option character <control-u> to specify the option named inside the brackets,

/#*/ shows that you may use <control-u> to gain access to a list of options.

V: calls for viewspecs,

L: calls for level adjustment.

SP: calls for a space as a quasi CA.

RPT: calls for a <control-b> to repeat the use of some buffer as in content searches.

Where in TNLS-7 you hit space at the herald before to move your CM, in TNLS-8 type J A for Jump to Address. A whole list of Jump commands that allow you to express address elements as command words (Jump to Return, Jump to Name, Jump to Link, etc.) is also available in TNLS-8, space retains its meaning within addresses, 13a

From/To

In TNLS-8 you Move and Copy things FROM someplace TO someplace else instead of vice versa. It's not too hard to get used to and the noise words help, but the changeover may be confusing for a while.

By default the herald is the first four letters of your subsystem. In the Useroptions subsystem you can reset the length of the herald or change it to a # for all subsystems (called terse herald)•

It controls feedback in the form of heralds, prompts, noise words, etc.; it controls recognition and default viewspecs; it redefines control characters (like the old NLSControlCharacters branch); and it formats pages in the TNLS Drint command. got fed UP with lack of documentation of computer conference evaluation which had been ready after a great deal of effort on Dec, 28; spent a week on writing report up myself since I had all necessary facts but was told indirectly by Gord Johnson that sinee BNR had originated project they would follow it through; I was also assured that now that various CC proposals were out of the way, attention would be paid to documenting what was becoming awfully stale data 9h2

completed cost benefit paper 9h3

afetr running many sensitivity analyses on BC Tel pr-ojet cross impact matrices, I decided that the results would not be useful si nee answers were often inconsistent, rather than document this in a working paperjas I had dome earlier woth Turoff applications in sept 1973), I decided that I would hold off • publication unless it became apparent that it would be useful reading for someone in the field 9h4
