In an effort to prepare our students for success in the new semester, the administrative team, counselors and class advisors held advisory class meetings at the close of the fall semester. The meetings provided an opportunity for students and staff alike to review and discuss our schoolwide expectations as part of our Positive Behavioral Supports and Interventions (PBIS) program. J.H. Rose has continued to build our PBIS program to maintain an environment conducive for academic and social success. Our ROSE expectations are: Parents are encouraged to further discuss with their children the expectations, the display of expectations in various settings, and the positive outcomes of meeting such expectations. Speaking of outcomes and successes, Rampants closed the fall semester with some notable accomplishments. The J.H. Rose Computer Science Club participated in the US Cyber Patriots preliminaries resulting in the following team placements: Teams: Hack n' slash - 1st gold in NC Digital Doom Squad - 2nd gold in NC Slackers & Hackers - 6th gold in NC micropachycephalosauruses - 1st Silver in NC In addition, our media center was recently awarded funding through the Future Ready Library Grant. One of the senior class milestones was reached with the completion of the fall semester “Project Connect Symposium”. Seniors completing English IV in the fall participated in the symposium, sharing the community connections they established while refining their research and writing skills. I end this month’s letter with a special congratulations to Ms. Karen Medlin who was named one of the six finalists for Pitt County Schools’ 2017-18 Teacher of the Year. I trust that as we seek to set our expectations high at Rose High School, we are building a foundation for success now and in the future. For your reflection: Expectations drive behavior. Academic Boosters Fund Spring Semester Grants

Academic Boosters January 2017

...enhancing teaching and learning Academic Boosters aim to award grants to teachers each semester in an effort to impact student learning. In the fall semester, we typically grant most of our donor dollars, and in the second semester we receive fewer requests for grants, thus less funds are awarded. The impact of these grants over the entire year is mighty! We are proud to report to you, our donors who make this happen, the grants that you were able to fund this semester...

DECA

Grant Sends Students

to State Competition

Rose High DECA students recently

won a variety of awards at the district

competition, and this grant makes it

possible for them to extend this

learning experience by competing at

the state level in March. Students

will gain valuable skills in Marketing

and Business.

Media Center

Storyteller Maker

Space: Recently the Media Center was awarded partial funding for this grant from the PCS Media and Digital Learning Department. Academic Boosters have now awarded the remaining funds needed to create this Storyteller Maker Space that will be available to all students. This grant gives students the ability to

collaborate on video projects like the

monster / oddities project in some English

classes as well as senior projects.

Because of these grants, students can

use iPads for recording, iMacs for editing,

and various supplies for creating clay-

mation characters and stop motion videos.

CTE Department Data Expansion: Grant money was awarded to purchase

extra digital storage for managing a

string of large data files associated with

student video and 3D production.

Taking Steps Beyond Rose (TSBR) TSBR is a multifaceted incentive and learning program targeting students

who have never considered attending college and are at risk beyond high

school because they have no one in their sphere of influence to guide them

toward a productive future. Academic Boosters is granting funds for the

culminating activity this year: a very special and formal business luncheon. Prior to this event

(which they must earn), students will attend seminars on professional attire, networking and

etiquette. At the luncheon, students will have the opportunity to use the skills they have learned

in the seminars while conversing with members of our local professional community and

celebrating their academic (and many other) accomplishments.

A community built on…

CHOCOLATE!

Deep within the walls of the file “vault” lies a well known sweet treasure… a stash of chocolate! When Ms. Pam joined the staff of Rose High in 2005, she did not know a soul. She observed, “No one ever looked this way unless they needed you!” As a way to meet the staff and get to know her new community, she offered chocolate to bridge the gap. “Who knew a simple piece of candy would bring us together?” Staff and students pop in daily for a pick me up, “but chocolate is only for staff,” notes Ms. Pam. “I buy the candy for the kids,” but the chocolate pours in from co-workers, parents, neighbors and organizations affiliated with Rose. Boosting academics includes giving our teachers a boost! If you have a heart for our teachers, drop off a bag for the “stash” in Student Services! Greet Mrs. Sawyer and Ms. Pam, and treat yourself to something sweet!
