    Vice Deans Message

We are here to help you prepare to meet the global business and leadership challenges of tomorrow. We are a school with a geocentric 21st century approach (as opposed to an ethnocentric 20thcentury approach) to management education today. Much of the knowledge creation at JGBStakes place in the classroom, through concentrated interaction between our faculty - who are well-

grounded in both research and practice - and our graduate students who are rening, redening, upgrading, and recreating their skills in management, careers, and professional lives.

In todays world where you can Google knowledge, you cannot Googlegood judgement, wisdom, creativity and innovation, leadership, communication skills, team-working abilities, or the values underlyingethical decision-making.

Tolerance for ambiguity, embracing diversity of thought and culture - these are not learnt on theInternet. They are learnt through extensive practice and the application of sound principles thatrest on strong, tested, conceptual foundations. This is the kind of leader for tomorrow whom weare trying to prepare today at JGBS; where learning to lead in the right way at the right time inthe right place, is not a skill which is learned quickly and lightly through memory tests; wheregood teamwork is a skill acquired and developed through extensive practice and continuousimprovement throughout our two years intensive, rigorous MBA and MBL curriculum.

Our students are consciously taught to take a global perspective in their management thinkingthrough their work with case studies and internationally experienced professors, in appliedresearch projects, and in their Action Learning programmes which are the capstones to theirdegree. These key learning components, reinforce and dovetail with their two-month internshipsat leading companies, upon completion of their core courses, and prior to nal placement at the

    end of the second year.

    Inspired Learning

Business education is witnessing a shift from conventional to innovativelearning.

Increasingly, students need to be trained in real life situations which enablethem to eectively respond to business issues. In this scenario, there is anincreasing emphasis on work experience prior to postgraduate studies, andsharing past knowledge to help chart a road map for the future of business. In addition, inter-cultural and cross-cultural understanding has become animportant component in a global managers prole.

Todays business education, therefore, should enable students to:

Deal with issues and ideas that are important for business value creation and

developmentDevelop skills and competencies that go beyond theoretical knowledgeMake their education relevant to the emerging global business paradigm.

The objective of our post graduate programmes is to create not just excellentmanagers, but also to instill the spirit of entrepreneurship so that they canevolve into leaders and wealth creators in years to come.

The Management programmes at JGBS are among the most rigorous in thecountry and are designed to give students a global management perspectivethrough a unique pedagogy of learning and interaction among peers in a

modular format. Activities like live projects, eld assignments, and simulationgames form an integral part of the programmes.

The programmes incorporate industry internships with an in-depth dissertation requirement to achieve holistic learningand a comprehensive understanding of the contemporarybusiness environment.

Over time, JGBS seeks to play a leading role in thedevelopment of a transnational knowledge economythrough interdisciplinary, inter-jurisdictional, and timely

research pursued by the various research centres of theSchool.

    Professor Sunanda SangwanAssistant Dean (Research)

At JGBS, research is pursued under various research centres - all with thefocus on creating knowledge for modernorganizations.

    Research Centres

    APPLIED FINANCE

The Centre for Applied Finance aims to dene, explore and assess theemerging issues and their implications for the protability of nancial marketintermediaries, the stability of the nancial system, and the welfare of nancial

service consumers. The centres main areas of focus include banking, insurance, investment management, risk management, pension funds, the operation ofnancial markets and other related topics.

    CORPORATE GOVERNANCE & APPLIED ETHICS

The centre aspires to become the leading multi-stakeholder, globally orientedresearch platform in India, in the eld of corporate governance and appliedethics. It will strive to be a centre of excellence for both theoretical and appliedresearch.

    DIGITAL MEDIA & COMMUNICATIONS

The centre seeks to create and disseminate knowledge for eective digitalmedia management in a business studies context through innovative and cross-disciplinary research, and interactions with leaders in academia, business andgovernment. FAMILY BUSINESS & WEALTH CREATION

The Centre for Family Business & Wealth Creation is designed to help anddeliver research based programmes that will serve to strengthen families inbusiness through business process reengineering, contemporaneous businessstrategy formulation, ownership and professional succession planning, familyleadership training and legacy building. This centre appreciates the pivotal role

that resources unique to a family rm can play in a companys survival andsuccess, and help it achieve a position of competitive advantage in its business

    domain.

    EMERGING ECONOMIES & MARKETS

The centre aims to monitor and develop a comprehensive understanding ofemerging economies and in particular the impact it might have on the Indianeconomy. Emerging and fast developing economies present a great opportunityfor multinationals, investors, and entrepreneurs but also pose a threat to jobs,

products and resources. Finding a medium for Cooptition as Joseph Stiglitz would refer to it, and fostering it is our central objective. The centre willmaintain the largest regional database on emerging countries which will fosterthe understanding of short-term and long-term trends in potential sectors inthese countries.

    INNOVATIVE LEADERSHIP & CHANGE

The centre is conceived as an entity which will not merely address Leadershipas a separate subject of debate and study, but instead tackle the integralquestion: What does it take to be an eective Leader operating in a global

context of customers, suppliers, competitors and regulatory environments; What do you need to know? How must you learn to think and act, in order tosuccessfully be a Leader? In other words , the Centre is not simply dedicated tothe study of Leadership per se isolated from the rest of senior managementresponsibility for planning, organizing and controlling. Rather, it is all abouthelping prepare the global leaders of tomorrow to assume responsibility andaccountability in equal measure, today.

    NEW CONSUMER TREND STUDIES

The centre has been established to bring new insights on consumer behaviourby conducting innovative research on various aspects of consumption patterns, shopping, new media, social media, retail formats, and unusual factors. Thecentre will also engage in knowledge dissemination to all stakeholders includingconsumers, retailers, marketers and researchers.

    SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP

One of the basic premises of entrepreneurship involves innovation to meet theexisting demand-supply gap. Given the lack of access to basic amenities likehealthcare and education by a majority of the population in India, the needfor creating a breed of trained individuals who can take initiative and facilitatein making the essential services available to the local communities, cannot beoveremphasized. This centre seeks to further this end by:Imparting entrepreneurs with the essential know-howIncubating ventures.

    INFRASTRUCTURE, ENERGY & GREEN TECHNOLOGY

This centre seeks to assess the current and future state of the nationalinfrastructure, identify and prioritize opportunities, and make strategic policy

recommendations. The current research focus spans South Asian countries.

    SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT & LOGISTICS

This centre aims to achieve research and education excellence in the eld of

SCM and Logistics, by oering research driven consultancy to organizations. With this objective the focus areas of the centre are:Establishing a strong research team with a special focus on a particular industryof choicePromoting outcome-based research looking at analyzing implementations thatresult in major savings and benchmarking of best practices.
