President’s Column

This is my first column as your new president. My term began in unusual fashion as I was out of the city when the AGM was held. I extend my sincere thanks to Past President Mark Salkie for his years of devoted leadership and for his assistance and advice. I also thank former Past President Hal Simons and Secretary Odette Masliyah for completing their years of service on the board. It is with pleasure that I welcome the new board members, Danny Assh, Laurie Mozeson, and Debby Waldman.

Our Hanukkah celebration on December 14 was very memorable. More than 100 guests joined us for a lunch of the best latkes in the city. Our Young at Heart choir entertained us with a variety of songs. Thank you to our wonderful chef, Bozena, and our amazing volunteers who made this celebra-tion so special: Hanna, Ken, Naomi W., Bronia, Pauline, Aisulu, Paula W., Donna, Wendy, Cecil, Hans, Raisa, Leslie, Elaine & Mark, Phyllis and Louise. Special thanks to our Ikebana masters Jean-Marcel Du-ciaume and Brenda Jackson for organizing volunteers and creating beautiful centre pieces for the cele-bration.

A special presentation was made at the Hannukah celebration. Stan Bronson, the President of Beth Tzedek Congregation, presented us with a donation of $2,150.00 from Beth Tzedek as it has ceased operation and is distributing funds to various organizations. Stan, his wife Sheila, and Martin Bankey all attended the lunch on behalf of Beth Tzedek.

More than 80 curious minds took classes in our 14th annual Learning in Retirement Series. We re-ceived everyone’s evaluation and are pleased to report that all of our learners were very satisfied with the variety and quality of courses as well as the engaging and interesting lecturers.

We have also had some amazing outings including Luminaria, trip to a Sikh temple, and a trip to Wetaskiwin Theatre. Our office would be pleased to receive suggestions from you, our members, as to where you would like to go and what you wish to see on future outings.

You will see in this newsletter that there are more good programs planned for you in January and February. Please mark your calendars and do not miss these wonderful events.

In closing, I wish all of you a year of peace and happiness in 2018.

Lewis Wasel, President

On January 18, beginning at 1p.m., experienced traveller and teacher, Ann Manson, will tell us

about her trip to Discover Franklin and Find the North West Passage. This year Ann embarked on a journey which took her 580 miles north of the Arctic Circle to see where Sir John Franklin and others searched for a northwest passage from Europe to China. Ann visited Franklin sites as well as Dorset and Thule archaeological sites, and bird sanctuaries. One of Ann’s fellow passengers was comedian, travel writer, broadcaster, Michael Palin. This is sure to be an extremely interesting Armchair Traveller.

is the day that marks the beginning of a “new year” for trees. This is the season in which the earliest-blooming trees in Israel emerge from their winter sleep and begin a new fruit-bearing cycle.

Wednesday, January 31 @12p.m. Sharon Bookhalter and Jerry Glasser: We were thrilled that we accomplished the challenges of the bike journey through the starkly beautiful Negev Desert. We have a whole new group of close friends. We visited sites that we would not have been able to visit had it not been for the JNF arrangements. We saw the desert in a way that cannot be compared to views through the windows of a car. We are looking forward to making our presentation and showing our incredible journey through Israel from this unique perspective.
