WHAT’S YOUR STORY?
http://www.congregationemanuel.org/
September 2016
Elul 5776
Dear Congregants and Friends,
“What’s your story?” A question we’d expect at a job interview, a bar, perhaps from another
passenger on an airplane. But this year, we’re asking it at Emanu-El.
The Jewish people have a great story. Jewish tradition offers myriad ways to understand our
story. Our prayers, our Torah, and our holidays all recall the events of the past – historical
and mythological – Adam and Eve, Abraham and Sarah, leaving Egypt, the 10
Commandments, entering the Land of Israel, exile and redemption over and over again.
At the same time, the peace of Shabbat and the reflections of the High Holy Days give us a
better perspective from which to consider our own, personal stories and how they fit into
the narrative of our people. Being “the people of the book” means sharing our stories,
passing them on, learning from them, and honoring them. The traditions that we hold dear
stand at the intersection of our personal narratives and those of the Jewish People.
This edition of our Jewish Journeys catalog is filled with opportunities to learn the tales of
our people and to reflect on our own stories through a Jewish prism. Listening to a visiting
scholar, learning Torah with our clergy or educator, enjoying a film, praying at services,
hearing a concert, traveling with one another, helping others in our community, and
celebrating our holy days and festivals – all of these and more will fill our year with
moments to connect, learn and better understand the stories that define us as individuals
and as a people.
So take out your calendar and mark down some dates when you can join us, and, together
we will continue our stories and the story of Congregation Emanu-El of Westchester.
L’shalom,
Rabbi Howard J. Goldsmith
RABBI’S MESSAGE
SEEK & DISCOVER
Jewish study leads to vitality that keeps our minds sharp and our souls searching. Rather than
relativism, Judaism confronts us with issues that help to clarify our place in history and our place in
our world. Classes, lectures, text study, book clubs, Single Malt Torah, and the Women’s Study
Group: see what you can discover.
FAMILY TIME
Family is the center of Jewish life. At our temple, your family will spend quality time together
living out the values that we all hold most dear and creating memories that will last a lifetime.
Congregation Emanu-El of Westchester is your family’s antidote to our fast-paced, digital,
over-programmed society.
MIX AND MINGLE
The center of our congregation is our sense of community. We celebrate together, comfort
each other, forge friendships and make connections - that is what we can uniquely offer as a
synagogue.
REFLECT & ELEVATE
We gather for Shabbat, holy days, festivals, memorial services and life-cycle events to reflect on the
themes of our lives as they echo through our tradition. Through songs and readings, sermons and
theatrics, sharing and quiet, we find our lives uplifted.
STEP-UP & GIVE-BACK
We live in safety and security, with an abundance unimaginable for past generations. Donating our
time and resources to worthy causes shows our gratitude for the plenty we enjoy. These acts of
tikkun olam (repairing the world) allow us to express our Jewish identity in a fulfilling, important way.
ICON GUIDE
As a congregation committed to meeting you where you are on your Jewish Journey, we are
determined to make it easy for you to identify the points of connection that most appeal to
you so that you can bring holiness, community and wisdom to your own life while adding
strength to our congregation. Watch for icons in materials from the temple and religious
school. Each icon answers the question: Why should I come?
VISION
A Community Dedicated to Celebrating Modern Jewish Life
Congregation Emanu-El of Westchester is committed to continuously fostering Reform Jewish life among all our congregants. There are three essential pillars to realizing this vision:
Instilling Jewish Values
We are committed to instilling and encouraging the practice of ethical and moral values. This includes the mission of extending acts of charity within and beyond the Jewish community.
Worshipping and Reflecting
We encourage active participation in Shabbat and holiday services, and activities as a means of educating, building Jewish community, and sharing traditions. We aspire to participatory services attended by all age groups.
Learning and Studying
We believe in studying Torah and texts of our tradition and relating them to the modern world. We embrace the concept of inter-generational study, family education and chevrutah, study groups of people coming together to learn and to discuss.
Through the implementation of these three pillars, we hope to strengthen a sense of community among our geographically diverse and multi-generational congregation.
We welcome all to join us in interpreting Judaism, so that it may continue to be a source of meaning and inspiration for our time.

Lay Led Shabbat Services
Our dedicated corps of lay-service leaders pitch in when the clergy are out of town. These intimate,
warm services provide a moment of reflection and community as the week comes to a close.
Family Services We each have stories from the synagogues of our childhood. These services create those stories
for the next generation. Familiar melodies and prayers as well as special features, holiday
celebrations and surprises make worship fun and meaningful.

SOCIAL ACTION COMMITTEE
“If I am for myself alone, what am I?” - Hillel
The story of the Jewish people is the story of tikkun olam, our ageless efforts to repair our world. Help make our community a better place! Our award-winning Social Action Committee runs projects throughout the year that further this mission. One day or every week…anything you do makes a big difference!
DOROT Westchester
Through personal contact with seniors, our volunteers help deliver vital services to the frail elderly
and forge loving bonds between the generations. In the process, they reap a rich harvest of
friendship, wisdom, and mutual appreciation. DOROT alleviates social isolation among the elderly
and provides services to help them live independently as valued members of the community. We
serve the Jewish and wider community, bringing the generations together in a mutually beneficial
partnership of elders, volunteers and professionals. Our work provides an effective model for
others. For more information or to volunteer, email Emily Cohen at [email protected].
Teach English as a Second Language
With all the opportunities to learn, we also take time to teach. Volunteers from our congregation
teach English as a Second Language to the immigrant community in Port Chester at the Don Bosco
Center. This wonderful opportunity to share our love of learning with others takes place on
Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9:30 - 11:00am. For more information or to volunteer
email [email protected]. Help others tell their story.
Knitzvah Corps
If you like to knit or crochet or would like to learn how, Knitzvah Corps
is the perfect project for you! Our Knitzvah Corps participants will
meet monthly to knit items like baby clothing and chemo caps to donate
to those in need. This is an opportunity to have fun and to perform a
mitzvah at the same time.
All sessions are on Mondays at 6:30PM.

Contribute to The Annual Fund (Operating)
“Without flour, there is no Torah.” - Pirke Avot
We welcome contributions to support the work of our congregation. Gifts in memory of a loved one are a fitting tribute to their lives. Gifts in honor of loved one’s accomplishments are a wonderful way to celebrate an achievement. Through additional dues, our Year-End Appeal, and our Annual Spring Benefit, there are numerous opportunities to give to the Annual Fund throughout the year. We have a number of options for planned giving to ensure your legacy and that of the congregation. Contributions are tax-deductible and ensure many more years of wonderful programming like that described in these pages. If you are interested in giving a gift of any kind, please contact Abbie Levitt in the temple office at 914-967-4382 x18.

The L’Dor V’Dor Campaign: Our Home, Our Future (Capital)
As anyone can see in the pages of this Jewish Journeys catalog our synagogue brims with activity. Much of that activity takes place in our beautiful sanctuary, classrooms and library. After 40 years, the sanctuary’s the roof and HVAC system need to be replaced. We have therefore embarked on The L’Dor V’Dor Capital Campaign to ensure that these inspiring spaces continue to be safe, comfortable, and welcoming for our myriad programs. Please consider a pledge of support to assist with this vital project. Our goal is 100% member participation in this effort. Pledges are payable over 5 years and every penny will help to ensure the future of the beautiful synagogue home that we share. Let’s raise the roof. Together. For more information please contact Temple Administrator, Abbie Levitt at 914-967-4382 x18.

Israel Beyond “The Conflict”
with Student Rabbi Jade Sank Every time the political rollercoaster of an American presidential election comes around, questions about the candidates’ relationships with Israel are of considerable concern to many American Jews. During the month of November, we will explore an Israel beyond "The Conflict" and American politics. We will learn about the fundamental components of the Israeli political system including the functions of the branches of government and the make-up of the political parties. We will also look at the diversity of Jewish voices within the State of Israel focusing in particular on the challenges of Jewish pluralism. And finally, we will consider the evolution of the relationship between the North American Reform movement and the Zionist project. Fridays at 12:00PM.

Engaging Aging
“...Man’s potential for change and growth is much greater than we are willing to admit, and that old age be regarded not as the age of stagnation but as the age of opportunities for inner growth.” - Abraham Joshua Heschel Just as the synagogue is a place where young children set down roots in the fertile soil of our tradition, it is also a place where adults - no matter their age - can reflect on how to live a meaningful life. This year our congregation continues our important discussion about aging, what it means to live “the third-third of life” with dignity, meaning, connection, fun, and holiness. We’re calling it Engaging Aging representing the ways that we embrace this part of our life. Please add your voice to these important dialogues.

THE SAMUEL L AND DAN L FRIEDMAN LECTURE
ON PEACE AND UNDERSTANDING
The vast territories of the Russian Empire at one time hosted the largest population of Jews in the world. Under the Soviet Union, every effort was made to erase Jewish identity while, at the same time, prejudice against Jews continued unabated. The international Soviet Jewry Movement sought their freedom, refusniks suffered behind the iron curtain, and those who managed to get out struggled to establish themselves in Israel, the US, and Western Europe. Today, Jewish life in the Former Soviet Union is experiencing an unprecedented renaissance.
On this night we’ll hear from Lev Golinkin, author of a memoir about his family’s escape from the Soviet Union and their journey to a new life in America. We’ll also be joined by Richard S. Hirschaut from the American Joint Distribution Committee (JDC). The JDC played a vital role in the resettlement of Soviet Jews and continues the critical work of sustaining Jews still living in Russia and fostering new Jewish life in that historic land. This vital piece of the Jewish story will inspire us as it challenges us to accept the past and chart a course to the future.
NIGHT OF COMEDY WITH BOB ALPER
Bob Alper is the world's only practicing clergyman doing stand-up comedy…intentionally. He performs internationally, from The Hollywood IMPROV to London theatres, has appeared on Comedy Central, Good Morning America, and Showtime, and was featured on T.V.'s EXTRA, immediately following a segment on the size of Jennifer Lopez's buttocks.
Bob is the author of a warm, poignant book, Life Doesn't Get Any Better Than This, which The Detroit Free Press awarded four stars and called “a volume of spiritual gems.” Bob (and please call him “Bob” or “Rabbi Alper;” anything other than “Rabbi Bob,” which, he says, is “too nauseatingly cute”) earned a B.A., rabbinic ordination, as well as a doctoral degree, and served congregations for fourteen years. All of this, naturally, prepared him for a successful career as a stand-up comic.

AUTHOR DAVID LASKIN History becomes more powerful for us when understood as part of our own stories.
Author David Laskin brings the Jewish history of the 20th century to life in his riveting book The Family: Three Journeys into the Heart of the Twentieth Century. “A modern-day scribe, Laskin honors the traditions, the lives, and the choices of his ancestors: revolutionaries and entrepreneurs, scholars and farmers, tycoons and truck drivers. The Family is a deeply personal, dramatic, and emotional account of people caught in a cataclysmic time in world history.” Laskin will speak about his journey of writing this incredible book and help us consider how the choices we make interact with the events around us to forge a future for ourselves and our descendants. In other words, how will our stories shape the stories of the future?

Our Israel: Historically, Religiously and Today. We can always find Israel near the front page of the newspaper or in our prayer books. But what does the ancient homeland in the Bible have to do with the place we now read about in the New York Times? On this adult trip to Israel, we will explore Israel’s many facets. What is our historic connection with the land of Israel, both in antiquity and in modern times? Israel has been a potent religious symbol for Jews for thousands of years.
What does it mean for us religiously today, especially in light of contemporary Orthodox hegemony? Finally, Israel both unites and divides the American Jewish community. What are the many issues faced by the modern state: security, technology, socio-economic, environmental, cultural and more? We will delve into these questions on an unforgettable journey led by our Rabbi Howard Goldsmith and the extraordinary Israeli guide Muki Jankelowitz. Important issues, beautiful hotels, colorful culture, delicious food, and a wonderful group of congregants: this will be an Israel trip like no other. RELIGIOUS SCHOOL & YOUTH
“We will do and we will understand.” - Exodus 24
Our 7th grade Hineini ACT NOW students go out into our community and put the Jewish values that they have learned into action making our world a better place and writing the next chapter of our Jewish story. This service-learning model has transformed Sunday mornings for our students and their families. Classes typically meet on Sunday mornings at 9:30AM at the synagogue except where noted in the schedules distributed by Jane Dubro, Program & Youth Director. Parents will be reminded of alternative times and locations.

9th Grade Trip to Washington, DC
Depart: Friday, December 2 Return: Monday, December 5 Every year at the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism's L’Taken program nearly 2,000
high school-aged students are exposed to a variety of public policy issues, explore the Jewish
values surrounding these issues, learn effective advocacy skills and then present their positions
on Capital Hill. We also celebrate Shabbat with teens from across the country and see the sites
of Washington, DC. This is a truely transformative experience for our teens.
Junior Youth Group
A chance for our younger students to have fun with the friends they’ve made at religious school, our Junior Youth Group is the perfect way to help build community among our younger members. Fun events set the stage for a commitment to Judaism that will endure. We’ve got three events scheduled and more to come. Watch Emanumail for additional programs, updates and details. Meets Sundays at 12:00PM.

“And the youth shall see visions.” - Joel 2:28
With a strong emphasis on social action, our Youth Group builds community while making our
community a better place. And they do it all while having fun! We have planned another busy year
that will help to build a meaningful connection between our teens, our congregation, and the
broader community. Watch the Emanumail and the bulletin for more information on these events.

AND SO MUCH MORE...
EMANUMAIL
To sign up for Emanumail, our weekly email blast, please send your email address to Dan O’Connor at [email protected].
GET INVOLVED
We welcome your involvement in the congregation. Beyond all the wonderful programs, we have a number of committees that would welcome your participation, input, and support. If you are interested in volunteering, please call Abbie Levitt in the temple office at 914-967-4382 x18.
Watch the weekly emails and monthly bulletins for new programs that we add throughout the year!
DONATE
“Without flour, there is no Torah.” - Pirke Avot
We welcome contributions to support the work of our congregation. Gifts in memory of a loved one are a fitting tribute to their lives. Gifts in honor of a loved one’s accomplishments are a wonderful way to celebrate an achievement.
