2009 Annual Report

Dear Friends,

Our 2009 annual report depicts a vibrant agency that is recognized in the community for its excellence. For more than 30 years, the agency’s vital programs and services have been considered necessary; however, they are needed now more than ever. This past year, our agency has done some incredible work in connecting those programs and services to people who need them.

To cite some of our many achievements over the past year: the JFS Pearlman Pantry provided enough food for nearly 100,000 meals, a 13% increase over last year. The Roth Family KidsKonnect Program was evaluated by the University of Central Florida School of Social Work, which indicated the program made “signifi cant” improvements in childrens’ attendance and social behaviors. Our Family Stabilization Program has been recognized by community funders as a model program and has received stimulus dollars through the City of Orlando and Seminole County, based on its impact within the community.

Two of our biggest accomplishments over the last year were the opening of the JFS Southwest Orlando Offi ce and the Darden Restaurants Foundation Pantry on the Jack & Lee Rosen Jewish Community Campus. This new site allows us to expand our reach and helps us to meet the needs of impoverished families in Orange, Osceola and Seminole counties. Equally exciting, JFS was one of the inaugural organizations selected to participate in the Community Foundation of Central Florida’s DonorEdge program, a web-based information site about local nonprofi t organizations’ management, governance, programs and fi nances that can infl uence the behavior of donors to drive results-oriented philanthropy.

While JFS has been true to its mission of meeting the needs of our community, we have not been immune to the economic adversity that has befallen this country. Diffi cult decisions were made and we were forced to close our adoption program, Adoption Services of Central Florida. Older Adult Services and the pilot KidsKonnect Dependency Program were also discontinued. As a result of these tough choices, we have refocused our resources and energies on case programming, with an emphasis on basic needs and prevention.

We believe that for 2010, JFS is well positioned to continue to provide key services in a fi scally responsible manner. The economic times will continue to challenge our daily operations, but with our dedicated board members, staff , volunteers and your support, 2010 will be a thriving year.

The Center for Counseling, Growth and Development . . .encompasses individual, family and group counseling. JFS is one of the few remaining agencies that operates on a sliding-fee scale to help meet clients’ needs, despite their fi nancial means. Medicare and select insurance providers are accepted to provide a continuum of care for our clients. All counselors are licensed and have Master’s degrees in Mental Health Counseling, Clinical Social Work or Marriage and Family Therapy. In 2009, JFS contracted with 110 new clients while continuing to carry a caseload of 49 existing clients.

Community Services . . .encompasses various components such as:

~The Women’s Forum - an interfaith outreach program developed to educate and support women in a group format. Topics have included Budget & Saving, Breast Cancer Awareness and The Sandwich Generation.

~Community Rabbi - Rabbi E. Arnold Siegel conducts a tri-county pastoral outreach program to the unaffi liated Jewish community. He is available for end-of-life services, visits to hospitals, correctional facilities, skilled nursing/assisted living facilities and those under hospice care.

~Centerpieces for Tzedakah - a special program that provides beautifully decorated centerpiece baskets which may be rented for special occasions. The centerpieces provide an opportunity to give tzedakah as you celebrate your special event. Funds raised help maintain the JFS pantries.

~Volunteer Services - Dedicated volunteers deliver nutritious holiday meals to homebound seniors, help stock food in the pantry, and participate on fundraising committees. Additionally, students fulfi ll community service and b’nai mitzvah projects at JFS. Residents of Kinneret Apartments participate in a group called the Kinneret Angels who knit and crochet baby blankets for infants in the Crisis Nursery.

~RIDE (Reliable Independent Drivers for the Elderly) - There is a large population of older adults who require support to get to and from essential medical appointments. JFS’ grant-funded RIDE program provides free door-to-door transportation to medical appointments for low-income older adults or disabled individuals who have no other means of transportation.

What We Do

The Roth Family KidsKonnect Program . . .is a supportive, educational group program developed for children experiencing family disruption. Trained counselors hold group sessions within the school setting to help children cope with the stresses and emotions of their families’ changes. Each year, more than 750 students from 45 public elementary and middle schools in Orange, Seminole and Osceola counties participate in the KidsKonnect program. In 2009, a study conducted by Dr. Eileen Abel from the UCF School of Social Work, and funded by the Roth family, proved that children who participated in KidsKonnect reported signifi cant improvements in attendance, social skills, and distracting behaviors. Based on the fi ndings, the KidsKonnect program was recommended as a national model.

Emergency Assistance . . .includes traditional fi nancial aid for rent and utilities in a one-time assistance program as well as the distribution of food through the Pearlman Pantry at our Winter Park site and the Darden Restaurants Foundation Pantry at our Southwest Orlando site. Caseworkers receive more than 110 telephone calls a day for help. In 2009, food for nearly 100,000 meals was provided for families and individuals in need. During the same period, JFS experienced a 20% increase in requests for emergency services. Another program through Emergency Services includes Get Caught Caring, our annual holiday toy drive. Nearly 300 underprivileged children received toys this past holiday season.

The Family Stabilization Program (FSP) . . .is a preventative, solution-based, long-term case management program designed to increase self-suffi ciency in low-income families through intensive 6-month case management and education. FSP helps to improve money management skills, employability and job security, family functioning, parenting skills, emotional coping abilities and improve/maintain current housing status.

In 2009, 56 families participated in the program and were given a certifi cate of completion. Ninety percent of clients referred for employment assistance gained employment. Of those referred for further education, 50% enrolled in GED or college courses. Forty percent of FSP clients improved their housing status to either more aff ordable or safer housing.
