Dear Friends,We often say that you are the Jewish Community Foundation. But what do we mean by that? The services we provide and relationships we have developed with individuals, fami-lies and organizations across Kansas City and beyond are varied. Like a comfortable home with many doors and windows, there are many ways to enter, it’s warm inside and there is always a place for you!

Together, we accomplish so much, doing more than we could alone. We owe our success to thoughtful planning and to the many relation-ships we have based on trust and mutual respect with people like you.

This year, we revisited our strategic plan, updating it and reinvigorating our goals to reflect the changing realities of our community. The process of planning alone was very instructional and helped us look at how our activities and our goals are aligned. The plan represents real aspirations of what we would like to see the Foundation become, and our updated mission statement on the following page reflects this.

Also fundamental to our success, are those inter-connected layers of trust – based relation-ships that extend far into the Jewish world to reinforce the values of charitable giving and to develop the financial resources to bring those values to life. They begin with a strong core – the relationships between the Foundation’s staff and volunteer leadership – and extend out to include our connections with individual donors, community organizations, other Jewish communal funders, and even to the greater North American Jewish communi-ty. Wherever you find yourself within these Jewish “communities”, we extend our welcome to you and invite you inside to become a part of the Foundation family. The doors (and windows!) are always open and there is a place for you!

OUR MISSION

The mission of the Jewish Community Foundation of Greater Kansas City is to promote the practice of tzedakah (righteousness, charity) and the pursuit of tikkun olam (repairing the world) by serving as the central resource and advocate for planned giving and endowments in the Kansas City Jewish community. We accomplish this by:

Building the financial resources to promote sustainable Jewish communal organizations and programs;

Engaging, educating and inspiring multiple generations of givers throughout the Jewish community; and

Providing creative philanthropic planning expertise to individuals and families to assist them in achieving their charitable goals.

OUR VISION

The vision of the Jewish Community Foundation of Greater Kansas City is to foster, sustain and ensure a strong and vibrant Jewish community for today and for generations to come.

IN MEMORIAM

We remember with sadness the members of our Foundation family whom we lost in 2011. We were indeed blessed by their love of community and generous spirit.

Celebrating the Past, Present & FutureOn Tuesday evening, December 6, 2011, members of the Jewish Community Foundation gathered to install the coming year’s Board of Trustees and re-dedicate the Foundation’s Donor Wall of Honor.

The elegant Wall located in the foyer of the Jewish Community Campus recognizes caring and committed members of our community who have arranged to create a permanent endowment at the Jewish Community Foundation of $25,000 or more. These gifts will ultimately benefit the Foundation, the Jewish Federation, our donors’ synagogues and many of our Jewish communal organizations.

Ron Goldsmith, President of the Board of Trustees, reflected upon the collective impact of the more than 300 donors whose names are proudly displayed on the Wall:

“For 52 years the Jewish Community Foundation has been guided by the Talmudic quote… ‘As my ancestors planted for me before I was born, so do I plant for those who come after me.’ We have been the beneficiaries of the wisdom and foresight of many leaders and donors who have brought us to where we are today, many of whom are listed on the Wall. Now it is our turn. We have all pursued our own personal paths within the Jewish community. But together we have built and sus-tained the full complement of Jewish communal insti-tutions and synagogues in Kansas City. And together through our planned gifts we are investing in vibrant Jewish life for the future.”

“Philanthropy has been a major priority for me all my life, no matter what the amount. Having a Donor Advised Fund at the Jewish Community Foundation is a wonderful way to take control of all my giving now and in the future. It is convenient, practical, and allows me a way to leave a legacy so that those who oversee my fund after I’m gone can preserve my philanthropic intentions.” – Robin Onikul

“My brother, Jacob ‘Chuck’ Friedman, was a man of few words whose quiet passion for Jewish education was patterned after the example of our parents Anna and Isadore. Touched by the sacrifices they made to meet the educational needs of their children, Jacob honored their memory with an endowment for the Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy through a charitable gift annuity. Later, with a second gift annuity, Jacob created an endowment for his synagogue, Ohev Sholom. Without much fanfare, Jacob joined the ranks of those whose generosity will affect the lives of generations to come.” – Dorothy Loeffler

“When we moved back to Kansas City we looked for ways to support the Jewish community and we found the Jewish Community Foundation is an excellent way to do this. We joined the Foundation for several reasons: they are very easy to work with; it provides a simple way for us to make donations to both Jewish and non-Jewish organizations; and, through the Foundation we will be able to continue to support the Jewish community after we are gone. Last but not least, assets we contribute are tax deductible for the year we make the contribution, but we can use those funds to support our favorite charities in future years.” – Allen and Gail Gutovitz

Bushman Community Endowment ProgramENSURING A BRIGHT FUTURE

The Bushman Community Endowment program was created in 2007 to train and motivate our Jewish communal organizations to secure their financial futures through planned giving. Since its inception, volunteers and professionals from thirteen Jewish organizations and synagogues have learned the art of planned giving and how to cultivate their most loyal donors. And YOU have responded beautifully.

Thanks to YOU and the generosity of more than 300 individuals and families like you, organizations in our Jew-ish community have secured an estimated $32 million in cash and future gifts to be added to their permanent en-dowments. These gifts will ensure that the physical, spiri-tual, educational and cultural needs of future generations will be met.

People of all ages, backgrounds and financial resources have left meaningful gifts to the organizations they love. They are the places where you have lived your Jewish val-ues; where you have developed life-long friendships; where you have made some of you fondest memories; and where you have turned for strength, support and celebration.

Memorial funds are a beautiful way of honoring the lives of those we have loved. These funds can be used to accumulate tribute gifts from family and friends for immediate distribution or to establish a permanent fund that perpetuates the name of the deceased and provides on-going support to the organizations or programs that touched our loved-one’s heart.

The tragic loss of her beloved daughter Brooke Tivol McGrath at age 28 inspired Cathy Tivol Maslan to establish the Brooke Tivol McGrath Legacy Fund as a way for her family and friends to honor Brooke’s memory: “We were each blessed to spend time on this earth with her and we will forever be shaped by her beauty, grace and good humor…” – Cathy Tivol Maslan

G3 Summit: The Women’s Guide to Good GivingThe Jewish Community Foundation values collaboration with our community partners and fellow funders. One of the highlights of 2011 was the G3 Summit, The Women’s Guide to Good Giving. This event was planned hand-in-hand with The Jewish Federation of Greater Kansas City’s Women Division. Held on October 30, this half-day conference helped more than one hundred women, of all ages and financial means, learn how they could make their charitable giving more meaningful and impactful.

Underwritten by the Foundation’s Jacob and Frances O. Brown Family Fund, the event featured keynote speaker Andrea Pactor, Associate Director of the Wom-en’s Philanthropy Institute at Indiana University. She presented research in the area of women’s giving and inspired the group to align their gifts of both time and money with their personal values. Attendees took away skills to help them use their giving as a force for societal change, to encourage a culture of char-ity within their own families and for the next generation, and to create individual giving plans that mirror their charitable values and financial abilities to give. This event made a tremendous impres-sion on the attendees. One participant reflected, “The event has had a huge, profound impact on my thinking! My at-titude, my thought processes and motiva-tion are totally different and so directed after attending! I’ve been discussing my charitablegiving with my kids and my husband and explaining the way I’m thinking. It has made such a difference! You’ve made a life change for me!”

The North AmericanJewish Community

2011 – A Year of National Prominence and RecognitionThe North American Jewish Community honored and celebrated with the Jewish Commu-nity Foundation of Greater Kansas City twice in 2011.

2ND NORTH AMERICAN JEWISH LEGACY FORUM

From May 3-5, 2011 the Foundation hosted more than 100 volunteers and development professionals from thirty-three Jewish communities across North America to network and learn from one another about different strategies for designing and implementing Create a Jewish Legacy programs. Kansas City’s success with the Bushman Community Endowment program has put us in the fore-front of the North American Jewish commu-nity’s planned giving and endowment build-ing movement. We are considered leaders and role models and were proud to showcase our very special Kansas City Jewish community. All of our out of town guests returned home empowered with practical information and new ideas in best-practices for implementing com-munity wide initiatives focused on the art of culti-vating planned gifts. The result? Jewish communi-ties across North American will have permanent resources from which to meet future generation’s needs and innovations.

WE’RE NUMBER 1!

In an annual survey conducted by the Jewish Federations of North America, Kansas City’s Jewish Community Foundation was ranked number 1 in overall endowment success! “The Endowment Health Check” compared Foundations of sixteen like-sized Jewish communities, including Co-lumbus, Dallas, Milwaukee and San Diego. Kansas City received straight-A’s for our per capita achievements in total assets under management, restricted fund dollars, number of charitable gift annuities, number and assets in both Donor Advised Funds and Supporting Foundations, and number of women who have endowed their Lion of Judah gifts to the Jewish Federation.

Thank YOU Kansas City for your trust and confidence and for helping make us #1!
