A TORAH MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI

Parashat Bo brings us the final three plagues, locusts, darkness, and the slaying of the first-born. It also features the splitting of the Sea of Reeds and the actual departure of the Israelites from Egypt. This year, probably because of the surge in anti-Semitic incidents across the globe, I was stuck by one subtext of the Exodus story. I

have found myself pondering the initial problem raised by Pharaoh and his chosen solution. Near the beginning of the Exodus story we are told that there is a new Pharaoh in Egypt, who did not know Joseph. (The first question to be raised is how can it be that a Pharaoh, or any other Egyptian for that matter, could not remember the person who saved the country from disaster.) Not only did this new Pharaoh forget about Joseph, he posited that the Israelites, who had been invited to stay in Egypt, had become too numerous and too powerful. He decided that they posed a danger. After creating issues where none seemed to exist, Pharaoh needed to solve the fictional "problem" of too many Israelites. If Pharaoh's motives had been honest and pure, common sense

dictates that he could have asked (or demanded) the Israelites to leave Egypt. Pharaoh, however, does not take a benign approach. Indeed, when Pharaoh's enslavement plan failed to reduce the population, Pharaoh decides to kill the Israelites off. The fact is that Pharaoh's decisions made, and the actions he took, hint at something more than Egyptian fear of the Israelites. The story is actually indicative of a strong underlying hatred. The next thing that happens in the Text bolsters the irrational hatred conclusion. Moses comes and asks Pharaoh to let the people go. If fear of the Israelites' large numbers was truly the motivating factor for treating the Israelites harshly, then the offer to take the people away should have made Pharaoh happy. It does not make Pharaoh happy because it is not the number of Israelites that bothers Pharaoh; rather it is the fact that there are any Israelites at all. It is this irrational hatred that, for some reason, gives people license to do as they please to the Israelites of old and the Jews of today. From Pharaoh to the terrorists in France to the Palestinian bus stabber, it is not what the Jews have done that enables evil people to do heinous things to Jews. Rather, they do these things simply because the victims are Jewish. Any other reason given is simply an excuse to hide the underlying hate. The cartoonists of Charlie Hebdo created caricatures of Mohammed which, sadly and sickly, made those cartoonists targets. But, the Jews in the Kosher market did nothing other than being born Jewish. The media, and the world, have not highlighted this fact. Our ancestors were freed from Egypt, but their descendants were not spared the agony of future "Egypts". We should use this Shabbat, in which we relive our emancipation, as a time to begin to give serious thought to how we might combat hatred of our people. Passively watching is no longer an option. Pray for peace, perform good deeds, and do not be silent. Shabbat Shalom - Rabbi Michael S. Jay

COMMUNITY EVENTS OF INTEREST

JEWS OF CUBA

Jews have lived in Cuba for centuries and there are somewhere around 1,500 Jews now living there, mostly in Havana. With landmark talks about renewing diplomatic relations between the

US and Cuba, there is a great deal of renewed interest in the island.

Rabbi Richard Hammerman, a frequent guest at the JCC of LBI, organized a Jewish Mission to Cuba this December, 2014 as Chairman of the World Jewry Committee of Congregation Agudath Israel, Caldwell, NJ. The day following the group's return, President Obama announced that Alan Gross was freed after 5-years imprisonment in Cuba. Rabbi Hammerman had first visited Cuba in 1959 and was always interested in returning. He and his wife Sharon will discuss their visit, the "coincidence" of Alan Gross' release, the current state of the Jewish community- and its future."
