JEWISH CARE SCOTLAND ANNUAL REVIEW 2016 “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much” Helen Keller One of the strengths of Jewish Care Scotland throughout its long history has been the ability to evolve and adapt to changes in the Community and the wider world. This flexibility means that we can always keep our focus on the needs of the clients and design high quality care services to meet these needs in the best way possible. The last year has seen some changes in staffing and volunteering in particular as we adapt to the challenges of declining numbers in the Jewish Community and severe restrictions on Local Authority funding for charities like ours. We are not unique in facing these circumstances and one of the best responses is to build strong relationships with others and work in partnership wherever possible. So we are delighted with the appointment of our two Community Engagement Officers to strengthen our links with the Jewish Community through communications, volunteering services and fundraising. Partnership with the wider Community is the lifeblood of JCS and we can achieve so much more together. Partnership is such a big word these days. We do not want to operate in splendid isolation when we can better serve our clients through co- operation and joint working. A great example of this is the new Get Together group at Barrland Court which sees JCS volunteers working alongside ERC staff in an Arklet facility. We don’t know the full extent of partnerships for the future: JCS is talking with Cosgrove Care and Newark Care about opportunities to achieve more together and we are also in discussions with Cosgrove Care, Maccabi and the Glasgow Jewish Community Trust about how to maximise the potential of the May Terrace buildings. What we do know, however, is that Jewish Care Scotland will be stronger if we work together and that good partnerships will help us to continue to provide a great service to our clients. We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your partnership with us. Whether as a volunteer, a staff member, a donor or a supportive friend we really appreciate all that you do for us and ask you to stand with us in the exciting days ahead. Jewish Care Scotland

GEORGE HECHT 1949-2016Chairman 2013-2016

George led Jewish Care Scotland with compassion, energy and enthusiasm. Our clients were alwayshis focus and he was at the forefront of change with a clear understanding of the need for servicesto evolve and adapt to the changing needs of the community while respecting the heritage of thecharity.

Having been a volunteer with other organisations, including JNF and Maccabi, George joined JewishCare Scotland in 2005, following in his mother’s footsteps by becoming a Thistle Club volunteer. Hewas a very good Befriender, visiting clients and bringing sunshine into sometimes lonely lives.

George joined the Board becoming Treasurer in 2008, the 150th Anniversary of Jewish Care Scotland, and succeeding Maureen Solomons as Chairman in 2013.

George was passionate about Jewish Care Scotland, totally committed to supporting and growingthe Charity, and his Chairmanship was a time of change for the organisation. George was determinedto safeguard the future of the charity, making sure there would be a Jewish Care Scotland in years tocome to look after the community.

His enthusiasm for the charity was infectious and in 2008, with David Kaye and Albert Sammeroff,he organised several successful events including a Kosher Kurry Night, which raised substantialfunds for the charity.

In 2011 he was one of the organisers of the successful JCS Trek to Latvia and Lithuania when over 50 supporters visited the region of manyof their forefathers and raised over £40,000 for the charity.

George had a vibrant personality and engaged with everyone he met. He was a warm and caring person who put his heart and soul intoJewish Care Scotland, never giving up on people in need. He will be very sorely missed and his invaluable contribution will never be forgotten.

“With the support of Angela, George never allowed his health problems to stop him from enjoying life, giving to his children and grandchildren, caringfor his many friends, and devoting himself one hundred percent to Jewish Care Scotland.” Rabbi Moshe Rubin

BETTY’S STORY

Betty Black has been coming to Jewish Care Scotland forover two years. Betty enjoys coming to JCS so much thatshe comes along on Sunday, Monday, Wednesday andThursday.

Her favourite activity at JCS is the choir. She says: “Itbrings so much to people, it’s wonderful. I don’t think anyof us can sing! But it brings out the best in us.”

Betty is particularly fond of JCS because she wanted to bea part of a place that looked out for those in need. Shesays: “The staff are so selfless and caring. You have to bea certain kind of person to work here.”

Betty wasn’t always too keen to come along to JCS. It wasa friend of Betty’s who originally suggested she camealong but for a while she resisted.

Betty says: “Finally I said yes. As soon as I had put my footthrough the door I knew it was for me and by golly, I havenever regretted it.”

PESACH FOOD PARCELS

Since 2013 Jewish Care Scotland’s Kosher Foodbank hasbeen a lifeline for individuals and families in thecommunity who are in need.

Rising costs, loss of income and family breakdowns arejust some of the reasons why people go hungry and turnto Jewish Care Scotland.

Pesach can be a particularly challenging time for those inneed. This year 23 Pesach food parcels were neededcompared to only 15 last year. JCS managed to meet thedemand due to the generosity of its supporters and thecommunity.

JCS Social Services Director Cathy Bell said: “We havebeen able to help 70 people (23 families) with Pesach foodparcels this year. Throughout the year we also help, onaverage, 19 families per week.”

The parcels contained all the basics for Pesach, includingenough grape juice for four cups of wine each, matzo, jam, soup, tea, coffee, sauces and tuna fish, as well as sweettreats for the children.

FLOWER ARRANGING CLASS

In our Day Centre we aim to provide lots of fun andinteresting activities. One of the classes we offered to theAviv club was flower arranging.

Our Community Engagement Officer, Sarah Rushbrooke, trained as a florist before working for JCS and was eager toshare her expertise with the club members. Sarah showedthem all how to make hand tied vase arrangements andshared some helpful tips on how to care for flowers.

The selection of flowers included red roses, chrysanthemums, gypsophila as well as some wonderfullyscented stocks. The class really enjoyed themselves andlearnt lots of floristry tips; they also got to take home theirarrangements.

ALBERT TANKEL

Albert Tankel combined a successful businesscareer with public service, always putting othersbefore himself.

Albert gave a lifetime’s service to Jewish CareScotland and, together with his wife Alice, hasbeen an inspiration to all in the organisation andbeyond.

Serving as Joint Chairman with Marcus Green from 1979-1995, Albert threwhimself into the role with his customary enthusiasm. He was sole Chairmanuntil 2005 when he became Honorary President of the charity. Under hisremarkable 26 year chairmanship the organisation was transformed fromthe Glasgow Jewish Welfare Board, based in Coplaw Street, into the JewishCare Scotland of today in its purpose built day care centre and offices, withAlbert skilfully negotiating the unique partnership with East RenfrewshireCouncil.

With his steady hand, Albert guided Jewish Care Scotland, listening to andloving the clients, staff and volunteers in equal measure. He was neverjudgmental and was wise and compassionate in all he did for the charity. He would often go out during the night with any volunteer who needed hisguidance or help with a client in trouble – even supplying chips for Aliceand Joan Sellyn late one night as they waited for a client in Govanhill!Indeed, there are a great many people in the community and beyond whobenefitted from Albert’s support over the years, always given in his owndiscreet and unassuming way.

VIVIAN STRANG

Vivian Strang made a huge contribution to JewishCare Scotland over many years, serving as boardmember, vice-president and most importantly, asa committed and talented volunteer who alwayshad time and concern for everyone.

Vivian was passionate about art, holding a Cityand Guilds qualification in embroidery, and was along-standing member of the Glasgow Society ofWomen Artists. She held classes in her home before joining Jewish CareScotland as a volunteer, and became Chair of the Arts & Crafts group, bringing energy, creative flair and enthusiasm to that work.

Vivian’s commitment, selfless dedication and outstanding work with JewishCare Scotland and the Jewish Convalescent Holiday Fund has benefited anenormous number of people in the community.

The walls of The Walton Community Care Centre carry reminderseverywhere of the high quality work which Vivian and her club membersproduced and she will be missed by her fellow volunteers, staff and clients.
