Playing it safe.

The State Road 408 and Interstate 4 interchange in downtown serves more than 135,000 vehicles a day. The Orlando-Orange County Expressway Authority (OOCEA) has a keen interest in keeping traffic moving and alerting customers to delays. Due to limited sight distance approaching the interchange, the ramp congestion can catch some drivers by surprise, contributing to traffic incidents in the area. The Authority needed a solution to provide automatic, real-time alerts when queues were building onto the mainline so drivers would be prepared to slow down when approaching the interchange.

Our automated congestion warning system provided driver awareness and safety. The full-color, full matrix dynamic message sign (DMS) automatically posts high-resolution warning messages. The system, one of the first of its kind, required solid engineering judgment mixed with creativity. The result – a unique and creative combination of technology and enhanced static signage elements. Since installation of the system, there’s been a 38 percent reduction in crashes.

A clear solution.

Polluted stormwater runoff from development around Lake Tahoe threatened the clear waters of Lake Tahoe, a major worldwide attraction. The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) made it mandatory for property owners to follow a stormwater best management practices (BMP) guide to handle runoff from their land. The cost burden and technical hurdles to homeowners and commercial properties was substantial.

We developed a website where homeowners can zoom into their property in a Google-like map and be walked through a semi-automated process to create and submit a stormwater BMP design for their property. Inclusion of collaborative web-based tools reaches far beyond stormwater in helping engineers and scientists plan and stage best management practices for the entire built environment and its integration with ecosystem services to meet social, economic, and cultural goals.

Growth takes a toll on the environment. Except here!

Our team completed an FDOT-approved environmental impact report (EIR) in 12 months for the first toll road in Leon County, Florida, funded by the first SIB loan awarded to a private landowner for the development of a Florida toll road.

We tapped into an innovative new means of funding and developing transportation infrastructure in Florida (and any other state that has a State Infrastructure Bank or SIB). We helped determine what needed to be done to make the client’s SIB loan application a winning submittal and provided the supporting documentation and analysis to the application package. Once the client was awarded the loan, we coordinated with all of the federal, state,

and local agencies to complete the NEPA analysis of the project and get it approved through FDOT.

Private landowners tend to be the best stewards of the land. In this case, the client wanted to explore the creation of a wildlife crossing to avoid species impacts; the use of natural berms to ease noise impacts on the surrounding birds and animals; the development of larger-than-needed drainage ponds to better capture and treat run-off that was contaminating Lake Jackson; the development of an on-site mitigation bank to offset the minimal wetland impacts of the project by creating forever-preserved habitat on the same area of land.

20121Hail to the Chief.

Atkins’ Aviation Construction Management Group was THIS close to the President! Well, sort of. They provided Title II Quality Assurance Services for the repair of the West Runway at Joint Base Andrews, where Air Force One and the Presidential Airlift Group are based. In fact, it’s THE primary runway for Air Force One.

The 50-year-old infrastructure was crumbling at well past its anticipated 25-year lifespan. We partnered with Geo-Marine to inspect and document the contractor’s daily activities. More than 25 professionals from across Atkins supported the project. Complex arrangements had to be made to balance security needs while promptly completing the project.

Get Smart.

The team used all kinds of smart innovations and tools including Primavera P6; a high definition laser scanner; smart phones with cameras; and tablets. While the construction contractor was fumbling with cumbersome full-sized drawings and binders of paper, Project Manager Peter Nielson, armed with a stack of cool gadgets, was quickly zeroing in on details and other items of discussion. As far as the government was concerned, we appeared to be the only entity totally plugged into the 21st century.

Eco-friendly endeavor.

Finca Virginia was transformed from an abandoned agricultural site used for illegal dumping, to a high value ecological area that has engaged the local community. In fact, the site is currently in the process to be transferred to the Puerto Rico Conservation Trust who manages other lands in Puerto Rico and incorporates ecotourism efforts. It’s expected that our mitigation project will serve as a place where generations can visit and learn about wetlands, birds, plants, and ecology.

Atkins engineers worked seamlessly with Atkins scientists to develop a mitigation project that’s exceeded the expected ecological benefits

Takin’ it to the streets.

The southeast community of Newport News once was a thriving neighborhood, with Jefferson Avenue serving as a classic “Main Street” corridor. After nearly 50 years of continual decline, the City of Newport News was looking to restore the vibrancy of this vital gateway to the southeast community by creating a pedestrian-friendly, active, mixed-use area with on-street parking, improved pedestrian facilities and bus service, underground existing overhead utilities and enhanced hardscape and streetscape.

Our local Newport News team designed a streetscape plan that incorporated sustainable hardscape elements and landscaping that would survive a challenging

downtown environment. It was important that the visual elements of the hardscaping recapture the livelihood and success of the corridor.

We Googled it.

Using Google SketchUp Pro, we presented an interactive 3-D model which was used as a design and communication tool. This helped the client visualize the end result. The model was used by the City to convey the improvements to the community and City Council, and eventually was used by the City to garner the necessary funds from City Council for the construction of the project.

CDOT Twin Tunnels WideningIdaho Springs, CO

Twin Tunnels Project Overview

First things first.

This project represents a number of firsts - it’s the first tunneling project for Atkins in the U.S.; the first project to be delivered in the U.S. under the Construction Manager/General Contractor (CMGC) method; and it’s believed to be one of the first, and certainly the largest, transportation tunnel expansion project in the U.S.

The project widened eastbound I-70 near Idaho Springs to three travel lanes, and included widening an existing tunnel bore, building a major bridge structure, nine retaining walls of various types, and constructing a trailhead and stream enhancements as mitigation. We played a major role in several separate studies and projects.

We had a vision.

Two Atkins employees participated in a week-long visioning session to develop the project concept. Atkins was recognized as a leader in that process, and as a result, was selected to perform the concept design in the Environmental Assessment which cleared the way for the project, and then also to perform the final design and produce construction documents.

Several procedural and technical innovations took center stage, including a new project delivery method, water quality enhancements, stream restoration techniques,

“softening” tunnel portals through visual aesthetics, using cutting-edge lighting technology, and use of a visioning process to develop the project concept. Sustainability was also key to this project.

Saying yes to NOAA.

Atkins served the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) as technical advisors and field scientists in the Deepwater Horizon oil spill shoreline assessment program. We served as the NOAA shoreline assessment coordinator (the lead federal scientific position in the shoreline response); state-wide technical advisors; shoreline treatment recommendation managers; inspection managers; and assessment team field scientists.

We also worked closely with BP/USCG shoreline cleanup operations, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), and state wildlife agencies to address endangered species issues during shoreline cleanup. As part of the solution, we helped develop a series of shoreline cleanup best management practices (BMPs) for endangered species, as well as an emergency consultation and signoff process with USFWS, which became incorporated into all shoreline cleanup plans and approvals.

Ahead of the game.

The 10-mile corridor improvements included pavement rehabilitation on I-80 from the Keystone Interchange to the Fourth Street Interchange, Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) infrastructure, new signing and striping, operational improvements, and landscaping and aesthetics throughout the project corridor. The corridor was opened to the public three months ahead of schedule!

The team included more than 15 disciplines and 30 subcontractors in addition to more than 25 task leads from Nevada Department of Transportation. With several varying goals and objectives, the team’s approach to success was defined in the foundation of doing what was best for the project, the community and the traveling public. Safety, quality, scope, schedule and budget were driving forces for every project decision.

This program is aces with the kids.

The ACE (Architecture, Construction, Engineering) program is about mentoring high school students and inspiring them to pursue careers in design and construction. Besides feeding the pipeline with the next generation of A/E industry workforce, our involvement with ACE offers many other opportunities: mentoring students, which continues beyond ACE; networking; connecting us to talented and motivated part-time help and potential future employees; enhancing young professionals’ presentation and communication skills; giving back to our community and our industry; building local relationships; and branding.

The kids definitely grow from being a part of ACE for the year! You can see it in their eyes and hear it in their stories (they’re excited when talking about it and participating in our after school program).

Denver does it all!

The Denver office focused on helping as many different populations within their community as possible. They provided help to newborns (Newborns in Need and Race for Fetal Hope; kids (school supplies and angel tree); adults (extreme community makeover); and seniors (angel tree and penny wars donation to Denver Hospice). Many of the activities focused on helping people in the short-term so they could make long-term changes on their own.

The variety of activities gave everyone the option to donate time, supplies, money, gifts, and/or energy. An incredible amount of participation and enthusiasm, on behalf every member of the office, was displayed throughout the year.

They talk, he listens.

Jason Barton listens. Sounds simple, right? But it takes a unique individual to really listen to what a client’s concerns are and then to actually act on the information to take the bricks off their back. Jason hears what the needs and concerns are, and then figures out how our services can address them efficiently and successfully.

Winning personality.

Jason’s quite the entrepreneur, too. He’s not afraid to approach a potential client to win business. In fact, he was instrumental in winning some great work with the largest Class I railroad company in the U.S., Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR). To date, we’ve executed three contracts totaling $3M, and have a new upcoming contract for $500,000. This happened, in part, because Jason is great at relationship building.

It’s no surprise, then, that we’ve also been invited to propose on two high-profile projects in which UPRR is involved with in Illinois and California.

Listen. Act. Win Work. – What a great combination, congratulations Jason!

He’s Personable. He’s Professional. He’s Palanuik. J.D. Palanuik is an on-site construction manager on our National Park Service (NPS) contract. You might say, he’s a personable, professional parks advocate! Because he’s all of those things in all of his dealings, he’s developed friendships with many of the people he works with.

Birdman of Alcatraz.

When the NPS was looking for CM services to oversee structural repairs to the cell house at Alcatraz, they requested that Atkins assign J.D. as the construction manager. Atkins was awarded this prestigious project as a direct result of the quality of work and excellent reputation J.D. has established with the client.

What can Brown do for YOU?

Compensation and benefits, recruiting, Oracle HRMS, Global Mobility, Performance Management System – if it involves Human Resources, Kevin Brown is ON it! Kevin oversees all those things and more. And he does it with efficiency and ease. He most recently managed the successful rollout of the new Cigna health insurance program on a very short turnaround. When it came to the HDHP and HSA benefits program, well, let’s just say…it was complicated. But Kevin’s innovative thinking led to a successful company-wide implementation of this benefit.

In the trenches.

Kevin’s really good at motivating his team. You know why? Because if there’s something to be done, he’s right there alongside them, providing support and guidance every step of the way. His confident and comfortable management style doesn’t hurt, either.

Congratulations to Kevin, a true human resource!

Aaron Autry knows the twists and turns of managing multiple transportation projects. As part of the Central Texas Regional Mobility Team (CTRMA) he’s taken on numerous critical roles including deputy program manager for Manor Expressway Phase II; and corridor manager for the Manor Expressway Phase I the Oakhill Parkway. Speaking of the Manor Expressway, Aaron’s efforts have literally spanned 10 years, two clients, and four professional services contracts. Talk about endurance!

Action figure.

When it comes to mentoring junior staff, Aaron swings into action. He’s always looking for opportunities to engage and challenge younger teammates to take on larger and more complex tasks, and he’s the first to offer and provide support.

Great going, Aaron!

Balancing act.

As a senior marketing manager, Megan Disney balances personnel management, work flow processes, proposal volume, conference coordination, organizational leadership…the list goes on. She’s successful at it all, in part, because of her frequent, positive and open communication. She even dedicates time each week to speak with every member of her team, listening to their concerns and supporting their marketing efforts.

Go team!

Megan’s infectious enthusiasm for her craft is really motivating. She’s always pushing her team to acquire new skills and learn new things. She encourages them to get involved with organizations within our industry and to take courses which will advance their knowledge and skills. She cares about what she does and how she does it. Talk about leading by example!

Congratulations, Megan. You’re a real inspiration.

A man and his lab.

Theran Gay can work in any area of the lab, including outside of the lab doing field work. As culture manager, this kind of diverse background helps him easily predict the needs of the testing facility and helps him troubleshoot and solve testing or related issues. Because of his vast amount of knowledge of overall testing and lab/culture operations, he’s the go-to source for lab personnel when it comes to testing questions and problem-solving within the lab.

Follow the leader.

Theran always comes to work with a positive “can do” attitude and uses that enthusiasm to encourage, motivate and lead his team. He listens. He guides. He encourages his team to perform their job well from the first few days of training and throughout their tenure. He’s a communicator; the job requires constant interaction and feedback among the team members so that everything gets done and done well. Theran certainly upholds the communication part of his job; his team members are happy, work hard, produce good work, and have just as much enthusiasm for the work as he does.

Great job, Theran!

“ Theran has proven himself to be an important and respected team leader in the toxicology lab. His vast knowledge, commitment to excellence, exceptional work ethic, and enthusiasm for his fellow teammates makes him a true leader. He’s highly valued for the work and enthusiasm he contributes to this division, and I’m not sure what I would do without him!” - Rachel Brown

She’s got our number.

Witty. Accounting savvy. Experienced. You can count on Sandy Parker for all three, and then some. With more than 20 years of Security and Exchange Commission accounting experience, she’s lightning-fast when it comes to finding resolutions to any issue that comes her way.

Every number tells a story.

When she needs to convey information to her team, Sandy does it by sharing a story or past experience, making it relatable. She’s a leader in the best sense – she figures out ways to build people up even when they’re down. No wonder she’s considered a mentor in the department. It’s easy to just direct people on what to do, but Sandy goes above and beyond and ensures that they understand the purpose of their job and how their sub-parts connect to the company as a whole.

Thanks for all you do, Sandy. Congratulations!

Sandra Parker

Connecting the DOTs.

As project manager for the Florida Department of Transportation’s (FDOT) central office ITS contract, David Chang works side-by-side with a pretty diverse group, including Atkins staff, other consultants, and FDOT staff. He’s one of those rare people with the ability to connect with and adapt to any person’s style. David must carefully balance the goals of program with the competing desires and interests of other client staff. He’s mastered an approach of how to work with a cast of strong personalities in a savvy way that keeps them all satisfied; so much so that FDOT refers to David and his team as “their staff.”

In hot pursuit.

David is a strong advocate for pursuing professional development opportunities, not only for himself, but for his staff. In addition to his Professional Engineer registrations, he’s also a professional project manager and a professional traffic operations engineer. Did we mention he hold a Master’s degree from Northwestern?

Congratulations David! We appreciate your hard work and dedication.

“ The time has come for us to recognize David for his tireless service and dedication to Atkins, the ITS Sector, his team, his clients, and the industry he seeks to advance.” - Matt D’Angelo

TECHNICAL ACHIEVEMENT

That’s a fact, Jack.

Ron Meyer’s roles have included technical sales and marketing, project estimation, design collaboration, technical writing and spec development, product evaluation and technical team leadership – this makes Ron a jack-of-all-trades.

Man with a past.

Ron’s past experience has been a real asset in implementing plans for the future. It’s helped shape many of the procedures, practices and requirements used by FDOT for statewide product approval. Need an example? The compliance matrix. Used by FDOT as part of the approved product list (APL) submittal process, the matrix was born from Ron’s experiences with past project submittals. As a vendor, he’d often provide a table of project requirements with a statement of conformance as part of the submittal. A rare thing for a contractor to provide. It didn’t go unnoticed. Reviewers liked the compliance matrix format so much that it’s now become part of FDOT’s APL requirements.

Congratulations to Ron Meyer, a man on the move within the transportation industry.

TECHNICAL ACHIEVEMENT

John Eash W&E

“ John truly has been and continues to be a vital technical resource for Atkins.” - Chris Sharek

Progressive professional.

Both internally and externally, John Eash is viewed as a responsive project manager, a technically excellent engineer, and a very knowledgeable professional. He’s been overseeing water, wastewater, stormwater, and environmental projects from the preliminary planning stages through final construction at Atkins for nearly 20 years. John is always innovative in his approach to various utility-related projects, including the design of vacuum sewer and grinder pump sewer systems.

Eash-y does it.

Without a doubt, John’s greatest ability is to take a challenging design and break it into its project components to sort out the most efficient and cost effective solution. For one client, he salvaged the root balls taken from exotic trees which had been removed from the site, and reused them as freshwater habitat for fish and wildlife.

Here’s to an environmental champion. Congratulations, John!
