Discovered in 1911 on the island of Madagascar; this peachy pink stone added

a new dimension of sophistication to the myriad of exquisite gems mined from African soil.

The stone was destined for a finer palate when it was named after John Pierpont Morgan – famed banker & gem connoisseur. It was Tiffany & Co. that first championed the pink champagne hued gem. And for their 175th Anniversary, the doyennes of the industry designed a breath-taking necklace using a 175 carat sq. cushion cut Morganite, accompanied by platinum and diamonds. (pictured).

A variety of Beryl; Morganite belongs to the same family of stones as Emerald and Aquamarine. Thus adding to its precious status, making this gem more than just a pretty bauble.

Morganite is relatively rare; the deposits in Madagascar have since declined; leaving only Brazil, Afghanistan, the US and some areas in Africa from which to mine the exquisite gem.

The peach tone in Morganite is the most common naturally occurring hue for the stone – with heat treatment often producing the pink shades.

Morganite scores a 7.5-8 on the Mohs scale; making it a reasonably hard stone with good toughness.

Being a member of the Beryl family, Morganite has a stable crystal structure – meaning that it wont lose its colour or clarity over time, and making it the perfect gem for both everyday and cocktail jewellery.

Because of its crisp, light tone and predominant lack of inclusions, Morganite is a gem best suited to being kept clean – to avoid a dull, opaque or milky appearance.

This beautiful gem is set to remain a firm favourite and ever popular with jewellery wearers the world over.

Intercolour Gems is proudly housing an extensive range of this exquisite gem – please contact us for quotes and availability.

There are numerous varieties of trigonal boro-silicates that mineralogists call

tourmaline. Tourmaline has many variations in its chemical composition and elements are easily substituted. These variations in chemical composition require that a species name be used for a range of compositions and not just the ideal “end-members’’.

Important Tourmaline VarietiesElbaite: The most prolific tourmaline variety used in jewellery and refers to a lithium bearing sodium aluminium boro-silicate. The name comes from the island of Elba where “lithia tourmaline’’ was first found in situ.

Dravite: Is a sodium aluminium boro-silicate. Whilst Dravite has no intrinsic colour the majority of natural occurring dravite tourmalines have brownish tones, because gem quality dravite is so rare many brown elbaites are often described as dravite due to their colour and are not actually the mineral variety dravite.

Liddicoatite: Is an uncommon member of the tourmaline group and is a lithium bearing calcium aluminium boro-silicate. Multicoloured tourmaline is often called liddicoatite by the trade but this usually has no scientific validation.

Tourmaline Trade NamesAchroite: The name used to describe colourless tourmalines, usually elbaite.

Bi-Colour: Used to describe tourmaline with marked zones of differing hue.

Chrome Tourmaline: Used to describe a bright green dravite tourmaline coloured by chrome or vanadium.

Indicolite: Is the name used to describe elbaite tourmaline with a dark blue to indigo blue colouration.

Paraiba Tourmaline: This name is still a contentious issue with many arguing that it should be reserved for tourmalines of Brazilian origin. Which would include tourmalines that do not contain copper. Others use it to describe copper bearing elbaite tourmaline from any region. The correct gemmological term for this copper bearing tourmaline is Cuprian Elbaite. The detection of copper and manganese in tourmaline became important to the gem trade after the discovery of vivid blue to greenish blue cuprian elbaite in the Brazilian state of Paraiba in the late 1980s. The trade seems to have accepted the use of “paraiba type’’ tourmaline to describe cuprian elbaite.

TOURMALINENOMENCLATURETourmaline is a very popular and colourful mineral group with many different varietal names as well as accepted trade names. Let’s take a look at the tourmaline family and what all these names really mean.

Rubelite: Is used to describe tourmalines with strong saturation in hues approaching red and purplish red.

Schorl: Is one of the tourmaline varieties as well as being a trade name for black coloured tourmaline.

Verdellite: Is used to describe green elbaite tourmalines.

Watermelon: Is used to describe tourmaline that features concentric bands of colour zoning. The middle is reddish, pink or purple surrounded by a whitish zone enclosed in a skin of greenish material.

As tourmaline is such a chemically complex group it requires the use of high tech equipment to determine the varieties. The presence of elements such as copper and manganese are essential to determining if the description “paraiba type’’ can be given to a stone. The most effective way to test paraiba type material is by using an Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence (EDXRF) spectrometer. The use of trade names like rubelite and indicolite is less scientific and relies on an individual’s perception of colour. There are no defined boundaries and the old adage comes to mind “How red is a ruby?’’.

Gem dealers now know that a minute trace of copper can make a vast difference in the

prices that are either paid for or realised by specific tourmalines.

In the case of many ornamental gem materials copper is an essential component in their composition. Typical examples would be the copper carbonates malachite and azurite, the phosphates pseudomalachite and turquoise or the silicates chrysocolla and shattuckite. Fine greens and blues are the most characteristic hues of these generally opaque minerals but the copper oxide cuprite may be transparent and it exhibits an intense ruby red. Several of the copper sulphide minerals such as bornite, chalcopyrite (peacock ore), chalcocite and covellite may be cut to yield striking iridescent cabochons.

While it is known that the initial discovery of copper took place in prehistoric times and there are no records to provide even an approximate date. However copper beads found in Iraq have reportedly been dated back to 9000BC. Native copper would have been employed to manufacture ancient artefacts of this nature. In fact it was much later, around 5000BC, that methods were finally developed that enabled metal-smiths to refine copper from its ores. The name copper is derived from the Latin word “cuprum” the Roman name for the island of Cyprus. The island was an important source at that time and the old Roman copper mine at Amiandos was still being worked in 1956 when the author was serving as a Royal Marine commando on the island.

One of the world’s best known and oldest copper mines was situated in southern Israel at Eilat in the Timna Valley of the HaDarom District. Reputedly this was the mine that supplied King Solomon with metal, the pharaohs with colourful gems and Cleopatra with eye-shadow.

Eilat stone (also named King Solomon’s stone) is the national stone of Israel. It is an attractive combination of azurite, chrysocolla, malachite, pseudomalachite and turquoise. Suitable material usually occurs in the upper, weathered region of copper ore bodies. While it was originally obtained from the mine at Eilat that source is now depleted. Very similar material is being imported and sold to the tourists that visit Eilat. It usually originates from mines in the Central African Copperbelt, Namibia or Chile.

COPPERCOLOURFUL

Copper plays an important role in the colouration of many gem materials. Quite recently, with the advent of Paraiba tourmaline, the gem trade has been made much more aware of the importance of copper as a colouring agent.
