Chair Report
The business end of the season is basically upon us with the Women’s finals starting this
weekend. Our Jetettes will be taking on Queanbeyan at Jamison Oval on Saturday in their semi-
final. This is a great result for the team and club as this is the first time the Jetettes have finished
in the top four of the AFL Canberra Women’s League Division 1 competition.
As the saying goes a week can be a long time in footy. Our Ingenium First Grade team had a
great win over Tuggeranong the other week. It was a close contest all game and to come away
with a one-point win was a great result for the Jets! Our next game against Ainslie last weekend
was always going to be tough given they sit atop the ladder having only lost a game all season.
Our team played hard all game and can be proud of their effort. While the score board showed a
heavy loss we continue to support the team and remain steadfast in our commitment to become
a competitive First Grade team over the next few years. We have made progress from last year
and will continue to this in our preparations for season 2017. We are also currently speaking with
AFL NSW/ACT and the other First Grade clubs about our support for next year. The whole
competition is committed with the Jets to achieving success in First Grade in the future.
Junior Finals start next weekend, 27 August, and will see the Jets hosting the Elimination Finals
from u12s – U17s. As part of our hosting duties we will be seeking volunteers to assist for a short
period on the day. Keep an eye out for the email about this on how you can help out on the day.
Hosting finals is another great fundraiser for our club as well as it being an exciting day of footy
for everyone.
A reminder, we are currently seeking expressions of interest for our senior men’s and women’s
coaching positions for 2017. We are also seeking applications for our Rising Stars Head Coach.

Junior President ReportAs we approach the end of another season, the Club and League are already looking towards
next year with a number of proposals regarding changes to the competition, mainly focussed on
the older age groups. The Club has been looking at some of the proposals with a firm goal of
having a team in the Rising Stars competition next year. The changes (if there will be any) will be
primarily focussed on addressing issues with players leaving the game in the older age groups
and therefore should have little to no impact.
As we also look towards the end of the year for the Club, Presentation Day activities will be held
on 24 Sep at Burgmann campus at Forde. The Club will be requesting nominations for the Club
Awards; Junior Jet of the Year, Junior Volunteer of the Year, Junior Coach of the Year and Junior
Clubperson of the Year. Please take the time to nominate those you feel worthy of recognition,
there are lots and lots of people around the Club that ‘go the extra mile’ to ensure things run
(relatively) smoothly and this is a great way to show your appreciation to those individuals.
Thanks to all those that attended the Trivia Night, we raised a fair sum for the Club and from all
reports everyone had a great time (especially the well dressed young men in the front table and
their great singing!). The competition for the coin toss and jam donut eating were hotly
contested and it was a close tussle in the overall winning table with only two points separating
the top two tables. Thanks to all those involved in organising the event and to those that helped
out throughout the evening!
Lastly, a final request, please don’t let your emotions get the better of you in the last weeks of the
season and during finals. Our most important aim is to provide a safe, fun and positive playing
environment and this needs to be maintained despite frustrations with umpires, opposition
players/officials and spectators. It is important to remember, everyone is trying their best out
there and if your comment is not in line with the code of conduct or is likely to have a negative
impact, rethink what you are going to say and/or do.

Expressions of Interest - Senior Football
Coaching and Support RolesThe Gungahlin Jets are currently 3 years into our strategic plan to move its senior teams from
community football to First and Second Grade in AFL Canberra’s senior men’s competition. As a
key pathway in this strategy, the Jets will once again be fielding a team in AFL Canberra’s ‘Rising
Stars’ competition in 2017.
Due to the new team of Rising Stars and actions stated in our strategic plan, the Gungahlin Jets
are seeking Expression of Interests (EOIs) for a variety of positions in its senior football
department:
•First Grade - Head Coach and Assistant Coaches – Paid position, Remuneration to be based on
experience
•Second Grade – Head Coach and Assistant Coach – Head Coach paid position
•Rising Stars – Head Coach and Assistant Coach – Head Coach paid position
•Women’s - Head Coach and Assistant Coaches – Head Coach paid position
•Football Operations Manager (Men’s)
•Football Operations Manager (Women’s)
Player/coaches will be considered for these positions.
If you don’t have current coaching qualifications, the Club can look at subsidising these as part of
your remuneration package. Tenure of contract will be discussed with the preferred applicants.
All EOIs are to be sent with a cover letter stating:
1. Why you would be the best candidate for the position you are applying for
2. A detailed breakdown of your coaching and playing experience, and
3.Information regarding relevant formal coaching qualifications.

Preferred candidates will be asked to present their coaching plan for 2017 and be interviewed by

Why should Dad’s have all the fun?That’s right mums, you too can have fun getting out on the field and umpiring. I think this has
been a secret that has been kept hidden by dads as it’s so much fun.
I decided to give umpiring a go on the weekend with the u10 Blacks and what an experience!
I must admit I was a little nervous, however after a chat to the opposition coach & chatting to the
kids before the game about the modified rules, it was all systems go.
You really do learn that umpiring is not as easy as it looks but it’s not rocket science either.
It’s great getting involved :
‐ you are right there in the midst of the game with the kids interacting with them
‐ you learn & appreciate the rules
‐ you build your confidence around the game
‐ it’s terrific exercise
I did make a couple..few questionable calls but that’s OK, it’s all about learning and getting
experience & the more you do it, the better you’ll get.
So I would like to ask all mum’s to give umpiring a go, it really is fun. You don’t have to do it on
your own at first if you don’t want to, you can co-umpire with a dad or mum and Steve Wall, our
Umpire Ambassador is always willing to assist. He gave me some great feedback on the weekend.
The opposition coaches came over, shook my hand and said well done & I was even awarded a
game day award by our team – we have one of the best coaches/managers in the club!
So I encourage all mum’s to get involved and the club is always happy to organise a coaching
session. And you know what, I didn’t know you could get so much satisfaction out of blowing a
whistle..maybe it’s to do with the fact that the kids actually stop and listen to you!
Would I do it again….YES. So GO JETS MUMS, GIVE IT A GO!

Round 20, the last round of the regular season, saw the Jetettes take on Queanbeyan in what was
was a must win match. The girls went into the round sitting in 5th place behind the Riverina Lions
- separated by just a small percentage, the girls needed a solid win to move into Division 1
(women's) finals for the first time in the Club's history.
The first quarter was possibly the Jetette's best starting quarter of the year, with an impressive run
amassing a decent buffer with a few quick goals. As to be expected, the wind at Amaroo caused
havoc with the girls in front of goal. Queanbeyan clawed back in the second quarter, reducing the
deficit to just one goal. After a uplifting half-time speech from Julesy, the girls switched back into
gear. The defence stepped up, letting in just one goal in the entire second half. The forwards were
connecting beautifully, with some strong hands and solid kicking increasing the lead. Special
mention to Maddie Shevlin with a serious contender for Goal of the Year after selling candy to
Queanbeyan's defence. In the end the girls prevailed with a ripping team effort. Well done girls!
The girls would also like to extend their best wishes to one of our newer Jetettes, Becky Mulherin,
who is moving from Canberra for more exciting things. We have loved having Becky in the team,
and wish her all the best for her new adventures. Just remember, jetettes.4.lyf.xo ! We would also
like to congratulate Ben Conway, Krystle 'Spesh' Cole's fiance, on achieving 100 games for his
club in Goulburn. Ben has been a massive help this year, running water and messages regularly.

The win meant the girls moved into outright 4th spot on the ladder, making the Division 1 finals!
As it turns out, the final ladder positions mean the girls will again come up against Queanbeyan
in the first semi next weekend. Keep an eye on the Gungahlin Jets Facebook page for further

Seniors Division 1vs AinslieAfter a big win the week prior we were hoping to be able to carry that momentum through to the
next week against a strong Ainslie outfit. Unfortunately however injury and work commitments
struck us badly resulting in a total of 31 regular players being unavailable to play this weekend.
The result of those absentees was seeing the club unfortunately having to forfeit the reserves
match and secondly on a more positive note bringing on the debut of another 2 players in Dan
Kelly and Daniel McAlonan, bringing the total of First Grade debutants this season to 11. To go
along with that Matt Ryall was recalled to the first grade side to play his 200th game for the club,
a fantastic effort from a loyal clubman.
The goal of the day was to compete as often as we could. We were realistic and knew that the
odds were stacked against us, however we were committed to playing team footy and putting
our best foot forward.
The match started with maximum pressure as Ainslie sent the ball forward time after time. The
Jets were able to hold them at bay for the initial stages, however Ainslie's workrate was first class
and we simply couldn't match them resulting in them piling on the goals in the second half of the
quarter to finish the quarter with 11 goals 3. They didn't have it all their own way though with the
Jets able to move the ball swiftly at times setting up Mitch Frail to kick two goals of his own in the
first quarter.
The second quarter was much the same as the first, however this time the Jets weren't able to
kick any of their own, whilst Ainslie put another 11 goals on the board, taking a 20 goal lead into
half time.
Things didn't change much in the second half with Ainslie dominating the play for the majority
of the half. The Jets found some momentum in the final quarter to kick their third goal of the
game and create a few more opportunities, however it was a massive win to Ainslie on the day.
Final scores saw the Jets 22 beaten by Ainslie 290 who kicked an unbelievably straight 46 goals
14.
On a tough day for the club it was great to see the future of the Jets stand up against a really
experienced and professional team. Joseph Looby was tough and gritty in and under the packs all
day. His ability to get first possession in the stoppages was outstanding . Joshua Bubnich
continued his stellar season showing plenty of dash and drove the ball forward time and time
again, whilst Will Hambleton carried his form on from the previous week to be everywhere in the
first half especially and Mitch Green showed plenty of guts running and tackling himself to
exhaustion.
Congratulations again to Matt Ryall on playing 200 games for the club. Matt has given over 11
years of service to this football club riding the highs and the lows, but even when times have
been tough Matt has been there giving his all for this football club. What a remarkable effort.
With one final game of season 2016 to come we are keen to finish the season on a positive note.
only two weeks left of football, so lets make the most of it whilst its here and give ourselves the
best chance possible to finish the season off on a high.

Under 8 Silver vs Magpies White
A glorious but windy day greeted all comers as the high flying Jets Silver put in arguably their
most dominant display of the season against Magpies White at Reid Oval.
Right from the first whistle the boys looked switched on across all zones. They used the ball
extremely well sharing it around with team mates and they marked their opponents when the
opposition had the ball with a terrific work rate. This caused a lot of frustration from the
opposition who struggled to get a grip on the game with a few of them showing signs of ill
discipline towards our boys.
To our boys credit they just continued to play the ball and goals came at a consistent rate. They
never really let the Magpies in the game and they controlled large patches of the football match
until the final whistle blew.
Leading the way was Mitchell McGrory who continued his remarkable season collecting many
quality possessions in another powerful display.
Sebastian Czoban was a constant thorn in the oppositions side as he marked and kicked long in a
commanding performance.
Karl Niesen was another who played a solid game putting his body on the line to win the ball.
Even when injured he went up forward and kicked a couple of telling goals.
Isaac Di Iulio was strong in the contest yet again. His willingness to stick to his task is most
pleasing and he continues to showcase just how much his kicking has improved.
Cooper Sheehan was picking up kicks for fun. Our most reliable kick is also a terrific mark for his
size and he always presented on a lead for his team mates.
Cooper Power just keeps finding space to allow a switch for his tram mates, he was rarely picked
up by the opposition and of he used his voice more would have had many more touches.
His brother Ryley Cooper was always energetic and keen for the football while being very
disciplined when marking his opponent when the opposition had the ball.
Lincoln Ashton again showed an uncanny ability to out jump taller players in the ruck and while
the windy conditions made it tricky to kick he continued to persist with his much improved skill.
Tommy Connolly was very good this week at marking a player. He regularly was right next to his
opponent and when we had the ball always presented an option for his team mates.
Edmund Popplewell used his speed and voice well continually providing an outlet to his team. His
enthusiasm for the ball allows him to collect many disposals.
Our Awards winners were Cooper Sheehan who won the Zambrero Award, Isaac Di Julio and
Tommy Connolly won the Sportsmans Warehouse Award, Sebastian Czoban received the Jets 1%
Award, with Maccas Awards being presented to Karl Niesen, Cooper and Riley Power, Lincoln
Ashton, Edmund Popplewell and Mitchell McGrory.
Well done boys on a wonderful team effort where the old cliche "All Played Well” could have
been the best way to describe the sides performance.
Under 10 Bluevs Tuggeranong Lions Blue (Round 13)
Round 13 saw the Jets Blue boys make the trek down the Tuggeranong parkway to take on the
Tuggeranong Lions Blue at their home ground in Kambah. Despite the clear blue sky, conditions
were chilly and the Jets boys spent some extra time in the warm up to ensure they were ready for
the conditions that awaited.
The team was given a challenge for the match and that was to play fast, look for the first option
for disposal and make that play. The boys heeded these instructions and were able to take the
field and execute this fast style of footy.
This immediately gave the Jets Blue boys the running advantage in the match, which turned into
possession advantage and then ultimately scoreboard advantage. The Jets were clinical and
focused; the final siren was welcomed relief for all those at the ground as it signalled the end of
the torture for the home team.
The final score was unknown but in simple terms it was ‘lost count to a couple’ with the Jets boys
sending an ominous message for season 2017 when the field opens up, player movement
becomes less restricted and scoreboard points count towards a final series.
Captain Courageous Jack Fitzgerald, led the team and led from the front with gritty contests for
the ball and lots of energy throughout the match looking to get involved at every opportunity.
Kasey van Dieman played smart and sought out scoring opportunities by getting himself free
from the defence and putting himself into scoring position to take advantage of the Jets ball
movement into the forward line.
Harrison Greenwood kicked more than a few and showed his evasive running skills to consistently
break into free space with the ball and seek out his teammates to launch attacking raids. Declan
Howard was busy, looking for chances to get involved and contesting hard when the ball came
his way.
Dylan Wherrett produced a number of high value plays which was just reward for his ongoing
efforts that usually start with the opening whistle and end at the final siren. Rok van Dalen kicked
several and was ever present in attack and defence looking to contribute to the team in any way
he could.
Austin Evans continued his run of good form and showed resilience by managing to play a full
match after missing most of the week at school through illness. Austin kicked a good goal for
measure.
Ashton Morrissey produced another high running effort and was continually rewarded by
dismantling the attacking raids of the opposition and securing possession for his team mates.
Domenico Pelle was everywhere and put on a general master class with strength in defence and
sublime skill in attack. Domenico was also well supported in this role by Darcy O’Keeffe who was
equally strong in defence and equally sublime with his level of skill on display.
Cassidy Schlesinger played his second game of AFL and produced match highlights of
outstanding ball handling at speed to secure possession and link with his team mates to
transition the ball to the forward line.
Next week, in the final match of the season. The mighty Jets Blue will again be playing away from
home when they take on the Eastlake Demons Red at Mawson. Go Jets!

Under 8 Grey vs Jets BlackThe Jets Grey took on the Jets Black on Saturday with both teams showing onlookers the talent
that's growing in the Jets juniors.
We took the field a player short to start with and toiled hard with the Blacks gaining midfield
supremacy and some great goal kicking, Clancy and Lewis defending brilliantly with some long
clearance kicks to ease the pressure. The second third saw the arrival of Lachlan and a bit more
zest from the team showing some tremendous teamwork hand balling and keeping momentum
going forward, Jesse and Lachie started getting their goal radar on even cracking out a nice snap
which unfortunately only registered a behind.
Darcey pulled off maybe the goal save of the year with her tippy toes right on the chalk as she
worked on identifying her team mates with jumpers inside out. Lewis's time in the forward
third was productive bagging a couple of goals and really showing the effort he has been putting
into improving his kicking distance. Well done Lewis!
The last third Harry racked up the touches, and as bombing his trade trademark barrels deep into
the forward line wasn't having the desired effect his handball and passing went to a new level.
Lincoln and Cooper toiled hard creating options up forward and both contributing to our better
teamwork coming out of the back half.
All in all it was great to see some of the growing talent from Black and Grey with some real skill
and teamwork starting to develop in both sides.
This week the coaches award went to Jesse, his direct kicking to teammates is really standing out.
The player of the day went to Clancy whose skills are always on display but during this game he
went further by showing great hand passing skills, identifying teammates in the open and really
trying to direct his disposals.

Under 11vs Eastlake
Last Saturday the Jets played the strong Eastlake team at Mawson. The Eastlake Demons are on
top of the ladder and the Jets were missing several key players so it was always going to be a
tough challenge, but the Jets pushed the Demons in every quarter.
From the centre bounce the Jets announced their intentions with an excellent passage of play
from Nathan and Justin through the centres and into attack on the right flank.
Lead by our two 50-Gamers, Connor and Jett, the boys were relentless with their tackling pressure
and chasing. A stiff breeze favoured Eastlake in the first quarter but the Jets defensive line held
fast and kept the Demons to a couple of goals. Tom, Charlie and Noah staved off the strong
Eastlake attack allowing the Jets to take advantage of the breeze in the second quarter and
outscore the opposition with a goal from Jett.
Jonathan, CJ, Finn and Rama were also strong in the centres and busted through line a number of
times to push the Jets into attack. CJ was a tackling machine and unlucky not to win a number of
free kicks for his side.
Rhys played one of his best games of the year. He controlled the centre and was a dominant force
in the defensive line. The two ex-Giants, Jonathan and Rhys, are proving dominant in the halves
and centre line and will be key to the Jets finals hopes.
Sean moved from his usual defensive position and was thrust into the forward line. He was put
under a lot of pressure from a strong Demons defence but used his size and strength to win the
ball and support the other Jets in the forwards.
The Jets were missing three key players for the Eastlake game and this meant other players need
to step up to the challenge. Chris and Cameron both took on the challenge and were excellent in
the forward line. Both boys attacked the ball well and were rewarded with shots on goals. Sana
also stepped up and had a great game in the centres. He made a number of good runs through
the pack and was a real headache for the Demons centres.
Ryan and Jack are improving each game and put in 100% effort against Eastlake. Ethan and
Hudson attacked the ball well and used their speed and strength to beat the Demons half line.
Both boys are growing in confidence each game and should be a force come the finals.
Two players played their 50th games against
Eastlake, Connor and Jett, and both had strong
games. I was proud to award the boys with their
50 game medals having coached them since the
under 8s. Jett and Connor have a love for footy
and the Jets - I look forward to them developing
into champions in the future. Well done boys!
The Eastlake coach addressed our boys after the
game and congratulated them on a great game
– “One of their toughest games this season”.

the Jet’s umpire, Jeremy Archer, on his excellent
performance officiating the game – feedback
that came from the players themselves.
We have one game before the finals and the
boys are confident and ready to take on the top
teams – bring on the finals!

Under 12vs Eastlake Demons at Mawson Oval, Saturday, 13 August, 2016
The mighty Under 12s Jetters jetsetted across to the southside for this tough Round 13 test
against equal-top side Eastlake, in the penultimate round of the season. This was going to be a
herculean challenge for the understrength Jets who, despite welcoming back Dom C and Ollie to
the side, were missing superstars Felix, Ky and Tanner.
The Mawson surface was a little on the lush side and the ground markings were noticeably
absent (i.e. no centre square) but the weather conditions were quite pleasant – the sun was out
and a light breeze favoured one end of the ground.
The home side won the toss and kicked with the breeze but the undermanned Jetters had come
to play – the first quarter was nothing short of brutal as the young Jets threw themselves into the
contest in a frenzy! Jakey Rawlins started with all guns blazing in the ruck, however copped a
nasty knock to the head and headed off for a rest. Despite this, the gutsy Jets hung tough and
both sides were goal-less at the first change.
The Jets had the wind advantage in the second quarter and continued to work extremely hard to
stay in the contest. Eastlake finally managed to break through for their first goal after Jets'
Captain Finn was whacked around the eye and came off with a budding shiner. By half-time the
lead had been extended to 16 points.
The injuries were beginning to take their toll on the Jets in the third term as they conceded three
goals but the Gungahls never stopped trying and gallantly battled back in the last quarter,
holding Eastlake to a solitary goal, an amazing effort under the circumstances.
This was a truly courageous effort by the mighty Jets – missing several key players, having several
others go down during the match but, despite all of this, holding the equal-top side to just 5
goals on a small ground – superb stuff!! There were some inspiring performances from the Jets –
Finn W, Jake and Nath played on with injuries, Josh took the field despite being sick as a dog,
Dom Calderazzo was crunched in a massive bump after putting his body on the line. Every single
Jets player made a significant contribution with their backs to the wall! Stirring stuff!!!

Under 13vs Queanbeyan Tigers
This week the Jets re-packed our bags, topped up the petrol tanks and made the journey this
time to Rockley Oval in Googong, which was an impressive facility, to take on the Queanbeyan
Tigers in the second last home and away game for 2016.
Q1 and Jet-lag, get it…(?) from the epic trip south must have been the reason why the Tigers got
the early lead on the Jets. It didn’t matter what the lads tried, the Tigers were everywhere using
their really tall talls effectively and the backs wondering if the Tigers had called an air assault on
the Jet’s defensive line with balls raining down on them. As the Jet-lag subsided, the boys began
to arrest the slide and provide a glimpse to what the next three quarters had in stall. At the end
of Q1, it was Jets 0.0.0 to Tigers 7.4.46.
Q2 saw the Jets pull the Tigers tempo back a few notches and beginning to get the measure of
the Tigers talls. In doing so, the Jets were able to make a few runs into the Tigers 50 but the
Tigers defence was pretty solid and the work hard going but we were getting shots at goal which
is all you can ask. Momentum was building for the Jets who arrested the first quarter goal fest to
keep the Tigers to just 3 goals in the second. At half time, it was Jets 0.0.1 to Tigers 10.5.65.
Q3 and many teams would think a 64 point lead was game over. Not the Jets; to the lads credit -
it was challenge accepted. Ash got the measure on the Tigers ruckman and was rucking well with
Ethan and Magnus zipping around making life tough for the Tigers mids and defence. Tayus and
Daniel were everywhere and Lachlan’s white t-shirt could be seen in many a contest. There was a
roll call of players who shrugged off the first half and put in a 110% effort; Dom, Jett, Austin and
Will were all in the contest and then some. The Tigers had a spell in the third that caused a bit of
grief for the Jets but the defence pressure from Alex, Ben, Noel, Nick and Trent P with cracking
support from the mids kept the Tigers to 1.5 for the quarter. The Jets were unlucky to land any
majors for the quarter however the pressure on the Tigers backs showed the Jets were not going
down lightly. At the end of Q3, it was Jets 0.1.1 to Tigers 11.10.76.
Q4 and the Jets were really firing. From end to end, the quality of play was awesome. There were
numerous link ups, handballs out of tight contests, quick plays and the use of space all proved a
big advantage to the Jets. The roll call of epic-ness continues with Blake M, Blake H, Trent H,
Rohan, Braden, James all showed the Jets will be a team to reckoned with in 2017. The runs into
the Tigers 50 became a lot more regular with the forwards having plenty of opportunities at goal.
Sadly, the efforts didn’t pay off with the Jets landing 1.3 and Jordan Mc landing the only major
for the Jets. The Jets scored a little win taking out the final quarter 1.3 to Tigers 1.2 but at the full
time siren, it was Jets 1.4.10 to Tigers 12.12.84.
This week’s much deserved awards were: The two Guzman y Gomez awards to Ethan and Jacob,
Zambrero to Blake M, Canberra Rock Climbing award to Ben and the Goodberry awards to Trent

Under 14vs Queanbeyan TigersA great day was provided for a game of football in sunny Queanbeyan. The boys were looking
forward to playing all week and were keen to practice the latest kick-out plan which had been
rehearsed all week in training. The ground was in good condition except for the pitch which the
car keys would not penetrate being so hard, so a definite “avoid” spot in the centre.
We mixed the side around a bit to give some practice to up and coming on ballers, also
welcoming back from a long injury break was Lachlan Armstrong. The boys were firing and keen
to do well. At the first bounce it was noted that Queanbeyan had come to play and were putting
some real pressure on the ball and stoppages. It was great to see Josh Staples doing so well in
the centre backing up his great game from last week. It was also good to see Alex Klose getting
plenty of the ball around the ground in which must have been a great break from being in the
back-line. Ben Ebdon, Gibson Foster and Mitch Evans were getting plenty of the ball up forward
and were making the most of opportunities constantly attacking the goals. Harrison and Gibbo
were kept very busy up forward but weren’t having it all their own way with the Tigers showing
great resistance.
It was great to see the backline being pushed by the Tigers with Tim, Jordan, Harry and Ian
showing why they are at home in the backline with the ball being pushed forward time and time
again. The two James’s were dominating through the centre as was Jack Thornton and Matty
Hambleton. Jack Bones was getting his hands on the footy quite a bit and chipped in for a
beautiful goal. A few 50 meter penalties ensured the Tigers hung in the game with some straight
kicking. Half time came and still we were yet to try out our new kick-out plan, always the way.
Both Lachlan’s started the third quarter full of fire with both being involved in running plays, it
was great to see Lachlan Armstrong back in the team and being the option out wide. Mitch
Robinson was dominating all over the ground and a move to put Logan in the back line paid
dividends straight away with him dominating the backline and running play. Jake was drifting
forward and was part of several passages of play resulting in goals to the forwards. Even chipped
in for a couple himself. Ben was absolutely killing it up forward and was presenting at every
opportunity taking marks, creating the play with his second and third efforts and was easily the
best on ground. Mitch Evans wasn’t far behind him as was Jack Bones. Ishka got his hands on the
footy and even laid a few good tackles which was great to see.
In the end it was a hard fought game and the score certainly did not reflect the way Queanbeyan
applied themselves and played the game, however it was a consistent effort from the Jets and
capitalising with some great kicking which saw the win go our way. Still for the whole game we
didn’t get to practice our kick out plans which was disappointing as we want to get them down
before finals, but that’s footy.

Youth Girls U16 vs AinslieThis week was our first game against Ainslie due to a washout early in the season. They have
been sitting just above us in second on the ladder so today was very important leading into the
finals. The only team we haven’t played, the only team we haven’t beaten.
We had 23 and they had 16. All the plans were out the window. 7 on the bench and the coach
was in all sorts. Trying to find the right match ups and getting everyone reasonable game time
was going to be tough. Just before the start of play Lily was struggling to get ready. The deep
heat could not be found. Aaron managed to pull some magic lotion from somewhere and Britto
got to start in the midfield.
Right from the start it was on like donkey kong. Both teams were here to play and both were
trying to physically dominate the other. The midfield contest was hard right from the outset. B2,
Britto, Sam and Matisse getting heavily involved. The ball didn’t get out of the middle for several
minutes. Lily, now on the field, and Britto had made some new friends in the Ainslie team and the
impact was intense. Possessions were many along with bumps, tackles and pressure. We moved it
forward to Odellia, Kim and Sarah who were making space but struggled to find the final pass
and convert. We were getting more inside 50s and the ‘wall’ was being set up and working.
Ainslie struggled to get out of their backline.
Some sustained pressure from the forwards and we picked up the first goal. Taking a 5 point lead
into the first break.
Into the second the game continued to be played in the midfield. Our mids and backs were
manning up and causing grief. Crystal, Chloe and Lisa again marking up really well, giving Foley
and Sam plenty of help. Courtney managed to stop the Ainslie full forward. She is improving each
week, reading the play well and getting in front. Bronte made a welcome return from injury and
was in a hurry to get involved. She played in front, chased, tackled and fought hard for the ball.
Ainslie made a break and through some good kicking picked up the only goal for the quarter. We
were down by a point at the long break but it was anyone’s game.
The championship quarter and the coach cracked. Another mix up with the magnets and we had
some girls out of position. After a quick reset and head count to make sure it was still 16 a side,
things settled down on the sideline. On the field the battle continued and had lost none of its
intensity. The girls lifted and started to play more controlled and deliberate footy. There were
some really good passages of measured kicking and marking from Sarah and Breeza which
started with the strong defensive efforts of Ella, Sam and Foley, and we marched up field, finding
space and hitting targets. We spent a lot of time in our forward 50. 1 goal 4 points was the
return. This was a lot in the context of the game. Especially considering we held Ainslie scoreless.
9 points up heading into the last and we were looking good.
We maintained our composure and the intensity right across the ground. The forwards kept the
pressure on when we missed our chances, Zoe, Kierra, Tess and ZAK were relentless against the
bigger Ainslie backfield, they got in and under, tackled and looked to set up their teammates.
This work and combination with Letiesha, Breeza, Sarah, Charlotte and the midfield saw us get
the break through goal we needed. The team lifted and a couple of minutes later B2 got a goal of
her own and was immediately dragged for not doing her post goal dance.
2 Ainslie goals late in the quarter, one after the siren, made the score more respectable but we
had the well earned victory and have secured our position in the finals.
We have now beaten every team in the competition, improved markedly across the season and
have set ourselves up very well for a crack at the finals.
At the end of the day Aarons magic lotion, sunscreen, had sorted out Lily and she made it
through the game.

Under 17 Bluevs Queanbeyan at Town ParkA hard day at the office!
We were taught a football lesson in our R13 clash against the top placed Queanbeyan and as
such were shown the level of intensity, physical & mental, that is required to be a better side. As
they say, good players play well against good teams and real character comes out when
challenged. Players should assess their own games honesty. All good is hard. Mediocrity is easy.
Stay away from mediocrity.
Parts of our game were pleasing however there are definitely areas we need to improve in quickly
if we are to be a chance to take out the comp, which the coaches strongly believe we can achieve.
We did play out the last quarter well which was a show of pride in the jumper. We are though still
yet to play well for four quarters which needs to come from the group demanding more of
themselves. No excuses, push through pain, run when you think you can't and compete, compete,
compete.
We would like to make mention of a few player's effort. Firstly, Mitch who again stood tall. His
skills were a little off however his ability and willingness to fight to the end are traits that some of
his team mates could aspire to. Also, Aiden who was given a role tried his heart out and can hold
his head up, Matty R, like Mitch, just gives his all and even when injured or sick never is and
Lachie Smith for his huge effort in keeping the competition's leading goal scorer goalless - Real
heart and courage!
Again we had the services of Logan & Lachlan from the 15s who gave all they had - Champion
effort boys and a real show of maturity in heavy traffic.
To our boys, Jack Walker, Jack Kennedy & Eric Wyndham thanks so much also for backing up to
help your brothers out. Very much appreciated.
So, some work to do however there's a great deal of upside. The coaches strongly believe in the
group and will continue to push hard to get the very best out of them as footballers.
Success is never on sale, you have to pay full price up front.

Under 17 Blackvs Marist at Arctic Park
Ah! Memories. Fronting up to Arctic Park for the 9 o’clock bounce, kicking the frost off the
ground and warming hands in front of the (barely adequate) heaters. Not sure how we got to
this point (although I vaguely think it was my idea) but it was 8am on Saturday morning and if we
had to get up at this time we thought we may as well make the best of it (at least I didn’t have to
drag my sorry arse from Yass like Elliott and Laekan).
This was our last game before commencing our finals preparations (we have a Bye this weekend)
so we wanted to build some momentum to take into that campaign (he says starting to get a bit
Napoleonic). A crisp, clean post-photo training session on Thursday really showed the boys were
clicking at the right time although, as with our opponents over the past few weeks, we didn’t
really know who was going to front up for Marist so despite their relatively lowly position we just
had to prepare for a dogfight.
With limited scratches in the W column ourselves in recent weeks the coaching staff was getting
a bit nervous as late season niggles began to limit the available foot soldiers. Calls were made to
former players to see if we could rouse any more teenagers from their Olympic slumbers but all
to no avail and we fronted up with just 18 on the day (some of whom shouldn’t really have played
but couldn’t be talked out of it). During the warmup though Moz appeared having cast off his
sling the day before and we now actually had someone to sit in those blue boxes we religiously
drag in and out of their house week after week.
With the Amaroo school whirligig starting to get some steam up we knew where most of the
game would be played and with James calling poorly again we started into the strong headwind.
It mightn’t sound much but a 3 point lead at quarter time (albeit from 6 inaccurate shots to 3)
was an excellent performance and really set us up for the day.
Under 17 Black continuedWith the first goal of the game not coming till late in the 2nd quarter (from a well taken set shot
from Jack as he battled to inure himself against the gobful he was getting from the opposition)
we probably weren’t really making the most of our dominance – 1 goal 11 never looks great on a
scorecard (unless the other card reads 0 goals 4 I suppose).
The third quarter showed that it wasn’t just the early start that bought back memories of the
Under 10’s; during the quarter Moz kicked his first ever goal and his smile was absolutely
infectious and his joy spread quickly with his teammates a whoopin’ an’ a hollerin’ – it was
wonderful to see that even sullen, uncommunicative teenagers can work themselves into a joyful
frenzy when their inhibitions are lowered.
That goal started a mini avalanche of goals over the next quarter (well, for a low scoring team we
considered it an avalanche) including another one from Moz, one from Datto to celebrate his
100th and then a couple from the unlikeliest of sources – Dirty D playing in his new role as a
small forward. Not only that but with Matisse kept scoreless on the Sunday D expected to reign
supreme at the traditional McNair footy review over Sunday dinner - until Essendon chalked up
their 2nd win for the year (not fair is it mate).
Although goals are always good what this team has prided itself on this year is its full ground
defensive effort so to keep Marist goalless for the game (the only occasion this happened in
Under 17 footy this year) and scoreless in the 2nd half pleased them more than anything and
we’ll finish the year with the lowest Against total in the comp – they’re stingy, miserly little
buggers.
So who played their part? It all started in the middle where Brad dominated the centre bounces
and James, Datto, Issy, Nick and OJ racked up the k’s chasing, tackling, extracting contested ball
and genuinely being unsociable. Up front the revamped forward line including Jack, D, Eric, Andy
and the Package worked tirelessly to provide targets and to actually get to front and centre in
virtually every contest (and don’t worry Andy
I won’t mention your shot on goal). The
backline of Laekan, Jack, Sam, Owen and Ben
were brutally efficient and gave their
opponents nothing all day. While Jesse and
Elliot worked tirelessly across most positions
on the field to paper over any gaps as they
appeared. But in the end it was all about
Moz.
There was one sad note at the end though
when we learnt that the Package was leaving
Canberra in a couple of weeks and had
therefore played his last game for the club.
Take your form down south mate and show
those Victorians how the Territorians play

Youth Girls U19s vs Eastlakes at AmarooRound 13 saw the Under 19 Youth Girls take on Eastlakes at Kingston. With a whole bunch of the
Under 16 girls telling me that they were unable to play, getting the numbers we needed to field a
side was looking a bit sketchy. With time fast approaching bounce down, we had 10 girls - Immy,
Lizzy, Chloe from Under 19s and Kim, Courtney, Sam, Letiesha, Crystal, Bronte (playing with a
broken finger) & Britto (who has 3 stitches in her knee). The Foley's rolled up with minutes to
spare bringing Zoe and Odelia (Giving us 12).
Eastlakes made a clever decision to have their team photo just before the game so their numbers
were impressive. Far outnumbering our dozen players. Eastlakes assured us that they were
losing most of them at half time and as such, were not in a position to lend us any players to
even up the numbers. It was decided that with 12 being the absolute minimum required to field
a side, that would be the numbers we were going to play. 7-9 Eastlake girls warmed their bench,
while our contained, Naida, James, Lochie and Myself. Then true to her form, Brit1 suddenly
appeared on the bench along side us as the girls ran into their positions to start the game. Ha...
the last laugh is ours Eastlakes, we now have 1 one the bench.
The game got underway with our girls throwing everything they had at Eastlakes. Lizzy started in
the ruck, "Stitches" Britto, Zoe and Crystal in the midfield and Odelia and "Fingers" Bronte on the
wings. The Kardashians (Kim, Courtney & Chloe) in the backline, joined by Sam who had the
tough task of cutting their Centre Half Forward out of the game. We boasted the powerhouse
forward line of Letiesha and Lizzy.
Immy seemed to be playing angry and was charging into every contest. Sam was doing her job
in the backline to great effect. Kim was drifting through the backline and cutting off all the loose
passes. And Chloe and Courtney were backing her up with intercepts of their own. Despite their

superior numbers and fresher players, Eastlakes were struggling to win possession forward of
centre. When we did have the ball in our forwardline, Letiesha and Lizzy were presenting well.
Our first goal of the game came off the boot of Letiesha who seemed to have her head in the
game. She lead hard out of goals, then doubled back to shake off her opponent and run onto
the bouncing ball and kick her first Under 19 goal of the season from the goal square. With Brit1
on the bench, I was able to inject her into defence and give Courtney a break before she could
have a run through the mids.
The second quarter was an armwrestle. Eastlakes manned up Kim in defence because she was so
outstanding the previous quarter. Crystal decided to man up on Eastlakes best midfielder and
saw her taken off the ground twice. Chloe pushed to a wing and was still damaging across the
backline. Bronte was moved to the forward line to protect her finger. And Lizzy and Immy
continued to be a menace in the rucks. I think we have the best rucking combination in the
competition. They dominate against Eastlakes and Queanbeyan and can hold their heads high
with their efforts against Belconnen. Odelia showed that playing a game of Basketball and 2
games of Football doesn't effect her pace. And on he wing she was darting in and out play,
usually taking the ball with her. Brit1 was holding up strong against the Eastlakes attacks. Britto,
typical to her crash and bash style of play was unstoppable, running through half hearted tackle
attempts and driving the ball long into our forward line. She sent a scare through the bench
when she started bleeding through her stitches, but was keen for a quick patch up, so she could
get back out there. Which was lucky for us as Chloe continued her horror run of injuries to
damage her shoulder and had to spend some significant time on the bench.
After the long break, we sucked in the oxygen, water and lollies to start the third as fresh as we
had the first. Sam was sticking to her opponent, and like Crystal's opponent from the quarter
before, had her dragged from the field, in an attempt to get Sam to pick on someone else!!! Zoe
moved to the forward line and was so full of run, she worked the whole ground and burnt off her
fresher opponents. Her efforts to get the ball and then her skills by foot saw it delivered to the
chest of the Jets player further down the field. Kim swapped with Britto and went into the
midfield. Both players continued to have a huge influence on the contest. Kim's tackling and
fight to win the ball, and Britto's charges out of fullback had to be uplifting to the girls around
them. Letiesha, not happy with a run on the wing during the second quarter, returned to the
forward line and kicked her second goal. A warning of things to come in future games?
The last quarter was played on heart and determination. With Crushed Shoulder Chloe on the
bench, Busted Knee Britto in defence and Fractured Finger Bronte back on the wing, we showed
Eastlakes what true football spirit was about. Lizzy joined Immy in the centre instead of swapping
out with her. She got 'Blue Hands' (That ones for you Naida) on the ball first and forced it
forward. Brit1 took up a midfield spot and played the position like a natural. She got herself into
open space, demanded the ball and bombed it deep into our forward line. Odelia moved into
defence, took some telling marks and ran the ball out. And Courtney moved forward with dashes
through the middle. Perhaps the play that best shows the passion and desire the girls exhibited
was late in the last quarter. Nursing a finger held together with wire and electrical tape, Bronte
showed little disregard for her own safety, when she ran with the flight of the ball, ended up
under a marking contest, copping a solid knee to the chest. She was hurt and didn't move from
the spot there she lay. As the play continued around her (not sure why the umpire thought it
best to move 5m to the left and continue with the game while someone was seeking medical
help), Bronte had James and Darren checking to see if she was ok. They eventually helped her to
her feet, she saw the ball was in her area and went back in to get it. The final Siren sounded not
long after.
Both myself, James, Naida and everyone else supporting the girls were proud of their
performance. With only 12 girls on the field, they all had to cover more ground, meaning that we
Youth Girls U19 continuedwere always going to run out of legs. Add to the mix 9 had already played a game earlier in the
day, and that Eastlakes had 12 fresh girls and a bench bursting at the seams, and the display
these 13 girls put on was inspirational. Not sure what happened to the players Eastlakes were
suppose to lose at half time, or was that on Optical Illusion (Told you I would get that phrase in
Michael) that made it look like they finished the game with a healthy bench of about 8 players,
and their cup of Sportsmanship running a little dry. But I have to say, I would much rather coach
a team of 13 girls full of spirit and loose, than stack the odds in my favour, play a depleted team
and win. Congratulations Girls, you were all the true champions on the day.
