JESUS: our model of forgiveness and love
SJC WWW.STJOHNOFTHECROSS.ORG JULY 19, 2020 16TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME PAGE 2
Today is celebrated as the Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time.
This weekend we welcome the Rev. Brian F.
Kean to the parish staff as our new Associate Pastor. Father was ordained as a
priest of the Archdiocese of Chicago in 2010 and has most recently served as the
Pastor of St. Julian Eymard Parish (Elk Grove Village). In addition to his introduction in this
bulletin, he will greet parishioners at all the Masses this weekend.
While the annual SJC Fest was cancelled for
2020, this year’s Fest Raffle was merely postponed a month. The Fest with its raffle is
our major fundraiser. The winning tickets for monetary prizes will be drawn next Sunday,
July 26. Raffle tickets ($20 or six for $100) were mailed to registered parishioner
households. If you have not yet done so, please return your ticket stubs and payment
this week to the mailbox outside the Parish Center office. This bulletin has additional
information including prize details. Thank you for supporting the work and mission of
St. John of the Cross Parish in this manner.
We continue to offer our full schedule of
Masses at the current maximum allowable capacity of 20% or 160 attendees. In order
to do this, many volunteers are needed for
us to comply with safety precautions. Please consider helping at the Mass you will be
attending. Registration/Reservation, wearing a mask, maintaining proper distancing, and
hand sanitizing are still required of all. The necessary information, including a “what to
expect” video, is available at stjohnofthecross.org
Given the travel restrictions due to Covid-19,
the annual summer mission co-operative collection will be taken up on the weekend
of August 1-2 throughout the Archdiocese of Chicago. I have invited my friend, the Rev.
Chris Aleti, MCCJ, to make this year’s appeal on behalf of the Comboni
Missionaries of the Sacred Heart. In June 2018, just before I began as pastor here, I
travelled to Uganda on a Comboni pilgrimage with Father Chris and other
friends of the MCCJ. There I grew in my appreciation for the vision of the founder, St.
Daniel Comboni (feast day: October 10), and for the work of the missionaries - men
and women, religious and lay - who carry out Comboni’s Plan.
Let us continue to pray for one another and
for our parish.

SJC Welcomes Fr. Brian Kean!!

Hello, my name is Fr. Brian Kean and I am looking forward to sharing my ministry with you! My last assignment was at St. Julian Eymard Parish in Elk Grove Village, where I was the pastor. Last year, my parish went through the Renew My Church process and, as a result, it was closed along with a nearby parish, Queen of the Rosary. Together, these two parishes combined to create a new parish (yet to be named). As it turned out, I was not selected to remain as the pastor of the newly-formed parish. As such, this is a time of both grieving for me, at the loss of St. Julian Eymard Parish, and a time of new possibility and excitement for me, at joining the St. John of the Cross community. (St. John of the Cross was my first choice for assignments during the priest placement process.) Circumstances being what they are, I believe God’s grace is at work (as always!) and leading me to a situation that will allow me to nourish my spiritual life as well as the spiritual lives of those I serve. Prior to my assignment at St. Julian Eymard, I was assigned as an Associate Pastor at St. Germaine Parish in Oak Lawn. I served at each of my assignments for five years and, before that, I was in the seminary for five years. Interestingly, I worked at my first job out of college for five years. To add to these coincidences, my birth-year ends in a five and I have five siblings. When I looked up the biblical meaning of the number five, I discovered that the number five represents God’s grace. This is certainly comforting and gratifying - even if God’s grace didn’t place me in the executive ranks after five years with Citibank (my first job out of college). God’s grace did lead to
the priesthood and, so, I did receive a different, and better, kind of treasure, after all! As you have probably picked up on by now, I am what is termed a “late” vocation, meaning that I discerned a call to the priesthood after leaving college and pursuing a career. In my case, the career was auditing and accounting. I passed the CPA exam and I worked at different Fortune 500 companies, mostly as an auditor. I also worked for a short time as a public accountant. Although I had noticed a call to the priesthood in elementary school, I overlooked the call and, instead, pursued a more traditional path of work, marriage, and family. (I never did manage to find a wife or have children!) As you might expect, when we ignore our vocations, we become restless and dissatisfied. This restlessness and dissatisfaction became more acute for me during my professional career and, especially, when I became more involved in volunteer activity through the 20/30 Club of Chicago and when I became more active in the Young Adult Ministry at Old St. Patrick Church, St. Clement Church, and St. Michael Church in the city. These activities along with weekday Mass at the Cathedral, when I worked at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, helped me to see that my greatest consolation was in the Eucharist, my most fervent hope was in our faith, and my greatest joy was in serving others. Putting two and two together (easy for an accountant), I re-discovered my calling and pursued it through ordination to the priesthood in 2010. I’m looking forward to joining your parish family and seeing where God’s grace will take us! Fr. Brian Kean

Summer Mission Appeal: Comboni Missions
SJC Welcomes Fr. Chris Aleti
at all Masses on August 1-2 Fr. Chris Aleti MCCJ, pictured to the right, joined the Comboni Missionaries in the North American Province in October 2014. He now works as the Mission Office Director at Comboni Mission Center (La Grange Park in Chicago). After his ordination in 2003, Fr. Chris worked in Uganda as a diocesan youth chaplain until 2013. He was then sent to Rome for his sabbatical year where he got his new assignment to come to work in the North American province in 2014 stationed at Chicago Comboni Mission Center. Fr. Chris said his greatest memory of working in Uganda was the hope the people brought to him in his ministry as their servant. During his theological studies, he spent some time for his missionary experience working in South Sudan.
The Comboni Missionaries of the Heart of Jesus were founded by St. Daniel Comboni, the first Bishop of Central Africa, in 1867. Originally they were a group of priests and brothers from all over Europe doing mission work in Africa under the name “Institute for the African Missions.” They became a religious society in 1895. Up to recent years they were popularly known as “Verona Fathers.” In 1979 the name was changed to the present form to honor both the founder and the spirituality of the society. The Comboni community in LaGrange Park was founded in 1985 for mission animation and formation of lay Comboni missionaries for mission work overseas. Currently, we minister and assist in parishes, nursing homes, Chaplaincy to the Sisters of St Joseph and the Hispanic community in Chicago and Joliet areas. The Comboni Lay Missionaries Program is another way in which we continue the work plan of St. Daniel Comboni today. This program began in the U.S. in 1994 and is also located in La Grange Park, Illinois, and we prepare lay missionaries for overseas assignments. For St. Daniel Comboni, the key elements of missionary methodology include respect for the culture and to nurture the religious expression of the people they serve. We join with the local community, living a simple life-style, showing solidarity with the least of all, and being the prophetic voices of the voiceless. The funds collected in this Mission Appeal Program this weekend will be sent to the Catholic dispensary of Amakuriat Parish, run by Comboni Missionary Sisters. The parish is built in a very remote area in the northwest part of Kenya. The majority of the people of this area are Pokots who are pastoralists. The sisters are involved in: first, evangelization, then education, women empowerment and health care. The sister in
charge of the healthcare is Sr. Gabriella, 81 years old from Italy. This facility provides healthcare for many patients that come every day to the dispensary. They also have a mobile clinic project for children and pregnant mothers, vaccinations, HIV/AIDS prevention program and a food program for malnourished children. Sr. Gabriella has been receiving some medicines from the government of Kenya but due to the situation of Covid-19, that supply has been reduced and does not come as regularly as before due to many other programs of the government that are affected. Apart from the government support, Sister used to get some help from her friends in Italy, which too has been affected due to Covid-19 crisis. In all our mission needs, we see this as a priority to support those sisters in their efforts to help the poor among the Pokot whom God has entrusted into their care. Whatever you can give, will make a big difference for the community where the sisters are serving. It is true that we have all been hit hard by Covid-19. We are struggling to put food on the table and send our children to school. Amidst all this, may we do all that we can to assist this community of the Pokot. We understand what you are experiencing these days, and we promise to keep you and your family in our daily prayers. May God protect you and keep you and your family safe.

The community of the Comboni sisters was opened on 14th of July 1985. The area does not have good infrastructures like schools, roads and health services. The few that are there are run by different Church groups. The illiteracy rate is high. The sisters follow the charism of St. Daniel Comboni to work and live with the poor.
Thanks for your continuous support of the St Francis Xavier Food Pantry, especially during the COVID

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is the process through which adults become fully initiated members of the Roman Catholic Church. They may be unbaptized, or a previously baptized Christian who wants to find out more about becoming Catholic. If you are an already baptized Catholic and wish to receive the sacraments of Eucharist and Confirmation we are here to help! The number one reason adults consider becoming Catholic is because someone asked them. Do you know of someone who is considering the Catholic faith or would like to know more? Lifelong Learning
Background on the Gospel In today’s Gospel, Jesus offers three parables to describe the Kingdom of Heaven. He also explains why he speaks to the crowds in parables and interprets the parable of the sower for the disciples. This reading is a continuation of Jesus’ discourse that we began reading last Sunday. All three parables use commonplace experiences to describe aspects of the Kingdom of Heaven. The first parable is longer and more detailed than the next two, and it alerts us to the two-fold reality of the Kingdom of Heaven. The beginnings of the Kingdom of Heaven can be found in this world. The fruition of the Kingdom of Heaven, however, will not be realized until the final judgment. In the meantime, as Jesus’ explanation to the disciples cautions, any effort to judge the progress of the Kingdom of Heaven is premature. Only God, in the final judgment, will distinguish the fruit of the Kingdom of Heaven and offer its reward. The second and third parables call to our attention the abundance that will result from the small beginnings of the Kingdom of Heaven. Just as a mustard seed—the smallest of all seeds—will become a large bush, so too God will bring his Kingdom to full bloom. As a small amount of yeast will leaven the entire batch of bread, so too God will bring about the expansion of his Kingdom. In each case the image is of the superabundance that God brings out of even the smallest of signs of the Kingdom. Contained within these parables are words of caution as well as words of consolation. In the parable of the sower we are warned against judging others. To judge and uproot the “weeds” prematurely will harm the wheat; final judgment rests with God. In the parables of the mustard seed and the yeast, we are consoled by the message that God can work wonders and produce abundance from even the smallest beginnings of the Kingdom of Heaven. Scripture Insights
What is heaven like? Wouldn’t we all like to know! So, it’s not surprising that people asked Jesus this question. But instead of telling them about pearly gates he told them about seeds. It’s true that the Kingdom of Heaven is the hope of eternal life, but according to Jesus, the Kingdom of Heaven is not only something in our future. It’s here already, planted like a seed in the hearts of those who believe, and in the Church. It may be hidden, like the seed under the dirt or the yeast folded into the dough, but is it here nevertheless. And Jesus promised that what is now concealed will someday be revealed (Matthew 10:26). This time we live in is a time of waiting between the planting and the harvest—that is, between Jesus’ first coming and his return. But during that time, those who follow Jesus are expected to do some things. We can continue the work of Jesus by spreading the seeds of the Kingdom. When we love our neighbor, when we feed the hungry, when we talk about our faith with others, we are planting seeds. But there is one thing we are not to do, and that is to judge others That means we are not allowed to try to determine who are the “wheat” and who are the “weeds.” As our First Reading says, we are to treat others with leniency and kindness. The psalm reminds us to forgive. In fact, forgiving others is another way to plant the seeds of the Kingdom (Matthew 18:21-35). Judgment is God’s job and even he is not yet doing it because there is still time for conversion—as long as one is alive, there is still time to turn to God. So keep spreading those seeds. Lord, you are good and forgiving. PSALM 86
We are called to work for justice. Justice must be tempered with compassion for the wrong-doer,
for God himself meets our own repentance with abundant kindness and mercy. Let Jesus, who died for us when we were sinners and now give us his Body and Blood,
be our model of forgiveness and love.

Prayer
May we live according to God’s ways and so make visible
the kingdom of heaven. May we be wheat
that nourishes, shelter that protects, and leaven that raises others to new hope.
Lord Jesus, You chose to be called the friend of sinners.
By your saving death and resurrection free me from my sins.
May your peace take root in my heart and bring forth a harvest of
love, holiness, and truth.
Bless us with Love, O Merciful God; That we may Love as you Love! That we may show patience, tolerance, Kindness, caring and love to all! Give me knowledge; O giver of Knowledge, That I may be one with my Universe and Mother Earth! O Compassionate One, grant compassion unto us; That we may help all fellow souls in need! Bless us with your Love O God.
Bless us with your Love.
O Lord, open my eyes that I may see the needs of others Open my ears that I may hear their cries; Open my heart so that they need not be without succor; Let me not be afraid to defend the weak because of the anger of the strong, Nor afraid to defend the poor because of the anger of the rich. Show me where love and hope and faith are needed, And use me to bring them to those places. And so open my eyes and my ears That I may this coming day be able to do some work of peace for thee. - Alan Paton, South Africa, United Methodist Hymnal #456 Unless noted, authors unknown. Source: xavier.edu
God of Goodness, I come into your presence
so aware of my human frailty and yet overwhelmed by your love for me.
I thank you that there is no human experience
that I might walk through where your love cannot reach me.
If I climb the highest mountain you are there
and yet if I find myself in the darkest valley of my life,
you are there. Teach me today to love you more.
Help me to rest in that love that asks nothing more
than the simple trusting heart of a child.
Grant us, Lord God, a vision of your world as your love would have it:
a world where the weak are protected, and none go hungry or poor;
a world where the riches of creation are shared, and everyone can enjoy them;
a world where different races and cultures live in harmony and mutual respect;
a world where peace is built with justice, and justice is guided by love.
Give us the inspiration and courage to build it, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Ever present God, you called us to be in relationship with one another and promised to dwell wherever two or three are gathered. In our community, we are many different people; we come from many different places, have many different cultures. Open our hearts that we may be bold in finding the riches of inclusion and the treasures of diversity among us. We pray in faith.

For Families
The easy days of summer give families more time together. Use this page as a discussion starter at dinner during the week.
Gospel Matthew 13:24-43 Gospel Summary This Gospel is a way of explaining why there is good and evil in the world today. As Jesus explained in the parable, the weeds (or evil) are allowed to grow with the wheat (or good). Only at the harvest (the end time) would God separate the good from the evil just as the farmer will separate the wheat from the weeds in Jesus' parable.
Reflection for Families How do we answer our children when they ask why bad things happen to good people? This parable of the wheat and the weeds may be a way of explaining why God allows evil, like the weeds, to grow next to goodness in our world today. Evil will not really be gone until the fullness of God's Kingdom.
Bringing the Gospel Into Your Family Try as a family to think about why God allows weeds to grow among the wheat in today's Gospel story. Either by looking through the newspaper, or sharing news about people in your own community, family or neighborhood, think about where weeds are growing. Consider ways that as a family you can help control the spreading of these weeds. What actions will you take?
Discussion Starters 1.Even though there are weeds in my life, I try to plant good seeds of wheat by . . .
2.One kind of weed this Gospel helps me understand better is . . . because . . .
3.One time that I saw something very small yield something very large was when . . . rclbenzinger.com
God of the earth, you make the land fruitful. You send the sun and rain to nourish the fruit of the earth. You sent your Son to nourish us. May the presence of Christ within us yield a harvest of justice and mercy. We pray through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son. Amen.

Tweets from Pope Francis
On the Day of Judgment we will not be judged for our ideas, but for the compassion we have shown to others. Pope Francis @Pontifex July 14
The Gospel recalls that the Word of God is a fruitful and effective seed that God scatters generously everywhere. If we want, we can become good soil, ploughed and carefully cultivated, to help ripen the seed of the Word. Making it fruitful depends on us. Pope Francis @Pontifex July 12
Faith is either missionary or it is no faith at all. Faith takes us out of ourselves and toward others. Faith must be transmitted, not to convince but to offer a treasure. Let us ask the Lord to help us live our faith with open doors: a transparent faith. Pope Francis @Pontifex July 9

Our Staff Mass Remembrances
Order a Mass Remembrance Online Remember a loved one with a Mass Remembrance. In addition to praying for all parishioners both living and deceased at Mass each week, Mass Remembrances may be offered for a particular intention or person; appropriate examples include the repose of the soul of someone who has died, on the occasion of a birthday, a wedding anniversary, anniversary of a death, for a newly married couple, in thanksgiving or when someone is ill or suffering. Your loved one’s name will be read at Mass and his or her name will be printed in the bulletin if you wish. Mass Remembrances may be ordered online on the home page of our website. We can mail the card to you or the recipient family. To make bulletin deadlines, Mass Remembrances are usually scheduled three to four weeks in advance of the Mass date.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic we were unable to host our Family Festival this year. The proceeds from our annual fundraising event help support all the ministries offered by the parish and the overall maintenance of our wonderful, but expensive parish facilities. These needs still exist and have been compounded by the impact of the pandemic on parish finances. While we do not expect to raise the funds the Annual Festival normally does, we would like to try as best we can to close the hole its cancellation has made in the parish budget. A key part of our fundraising at the Fest has been a cash raffle. Last year’s raffle, for example, netted SJC nearly $40,000. We have decided to go forward with it again this year. With your help, we hope to top last year ’s success. By now, all parishioners should have received a mailing for this year’s raffle. It includes a packet of 6 tickets. Please consider purchasing them yourself or selling them to family and friends.
Individual tickets are $20 each. If you buy five for $100, you receive the sixth one for free!
Prizes are the same as they were last year:
5th Prize: $250 each (2 winners) 4th Prize: $500
3rd Prize: $1,000 2nd Prize: $2,500
Grand Prize: $5,000
Additional raffle tickets can be picked up in the church narthex. All ticket stubs and checks or cash should be mailed or dropped in the Parish Center mailbox in the envelope enclosed with
the raffle mailing. Checks should be made payable to St. John of the Cross. The drawing will be held on Sunday, July 26.
Thank you in advance for your generosity and help in offsetting the financial impact the pandemic has had on our parish’s finances!
