PASTOR’S LETTER
Dear Parishioners,
I came across this article that you may find of interest.
The Good Surprises of God and the Coronavirus Crisis
As the coronavirus situation stands, things don’t look good. The virus is killing thousands of Americans (as viruses do). The economy is in free fall, hemorrhaging trillions of dollars and millions of lost jobs.
Abortion clinics and marijuana dispensaries are open as “essential” businesses. Churches are closed, and the Sacraments hardly administered in America - and most of the world. All these developments point to medical, economic, and spiritual disasters.
To those engaged in the fight for Christian culture, it seems that little can be done to stop this crashing disaster. Everything seems disproportionate to the means at hand. Only one factor stands outside this terrible spectacle. That factor is God.
The God Factor
Yes, God is outside this threatening scene. He goes unrecognized by the scientific and political establishments at the controls of this crisis management. God does not figure into the solutions now offered by politicians and technocrats. He is told to stay out of this crisis as Church services are largely suppressed globally. Nevertheless, He is there.
His exclusion is not something new. There are times in history when the cause of the Church seems lost. All world powers are arrayed and ready to head down the road to disaster without God or the Church. They seem content to rely upon their own resources, flaunt their pride, and push their agendas.
This crisis seems to be one of those times.
The Surprises of God
And yet all is not lost.
In times like these, God sometimes has His surprises that confound the designs of secular officials, scientists, and politicians. When least expected, their plans start to go wrong. The unexpected happens.
What usually triggers the surprises of God are fervent souls that raise their voices to heaven, asking His aid. Such souls are not recorded on worldly registers but weigh heavily on heavenly scales.
By all accounts, America should no longer have these fervent souls. As the nation on the cutting edge of modernity and the sexual revolution, they should have been wiped out long ago. Kissinger would have us embrace our secular, post-corona future enthusiastically without God.
(continued….)

SAINT JOSEPH PARISH WAKEFIELD MA
However, despite everything, America remains a religious nation. And in this time of tribulation caused by the coronavirus crisis, many Americans are turning to God. Recent polls claim that almost half of all Americans (44%) see the coronavirus as a “wake-up call” to return to God or even as a sign of the last days. More than half of the population (55%) has prayed to God for an end to the crisis.
An Ever Greater Uneasiness
Such movements toward God express an ever greater uneasiness with a situation that worsens daily. People are losing faith in the ability of politicians and technocrats to dominate the virus. They are confused by the media that create panic and alarm around the issue to the point that it becomes almost impossible to understand correctly and prioritize intelligently.
The shutting down of the economy threatens to make the “cure worse than the disease.” Above all, the shuttering of the churches has led many to question why are officials “quarantining” God.
Most people have not converted. They are not yet asking for His aid with great fervor. However, they are looking in God’s direction. With each passing day, more wonder if the solution might come from Him.
Preparing for the Surprises of God
When enough people change, the surprises of God can occur. God hears the cries of His people and can respond for their better good. God writes straight with crooked lines. Thus, His action may not be the instant resolution of the problem since suffering often brings out the best in people and unites them to God. His solutions might be different from what we imagine—and they are always much better. God hears our prayers and answers them for His greater glory and our good.
Much depends upon us in this complex scenario. We have to call upon God with sufficient zeal and sincerity. If we do our part, God will not abandon us. Indeed, God acts in history, especially in times like these. He moves when people appear helpless so that it might be clear that it was He who acted and changed the situation. Thus, we are invited to confide more in Him.
However, God can also surprise us by asking us for a great gift and sacrifice. Our love for Him must take us to the point that we convert and amend our lives, as the Blessed Mother requested at Fatima. Our pleas for aid cannot take us to a return to the “normal” pre-corona gravely sinful world. We must desire a culture and society that follow God’s law.
As the coronavirus crisis stands, things look bleak. Let us confide in the surprises of God.
~ The American TFP, John Horvat II
I will be available for confession this week on Saturday, May 2, from 3:00 p.m. - 3:45 p.m. in the chapel or by appointment. May Jesus continue to shepherd you in all of your needs.
God love you,

FOR YOUR INFORMATION
Why Did Steve Jobs Limit His Children’s Exposure to Technology?
There is the mistaken impression that computers represent the future and that everyone, especially the very young, should become computer savvy as soon as possible. According to this view, failure to expose children to high technology handicaps their ability to function in the real world.
However, in the real world, addiction to the omnipresent small screens can be an actual handicap. Discouraging overexposure to technology might actually be an advantage in today’s hyper-connected world.
Such views are not those of overprotective parents unfamiliar with these technologies. Even the most enthusiastic promoters of computer gadgetry can be seen discouraging the very products they produce. The most notable case was Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, who claimed he did not let his teenage children have iPads and limited their tech consumption at home.
When the iPad exploded into market in 2010, Jobs’ daughters Erin and Eve were not part of the market. The late Steve Jobs and wife Laurene Powell deliberately regulated their children’s exposure to the new products and its culture.
What did the young Jobs girls do instead of texting and surfing the Web? Apparently, they did the things normal children do.
Biographer Walter Isaacson reports the family had dinner together every night where they would discuss books, history and other non-technical things. The iPad, iPhone and other devices had no place at their table. And the children did not seem particularly disturbed by the fact.
Jobs, who died in October 2011, thought that limiting his daughters’ computer use would help his children develop a love for creative expression. He did not want them whiling away their time on games and useless programs. Paradoxically, Jobs enthusiastically filled the world with gadgets that transformed the way most people listen to music, entertain themselves and communicate. However, what he marketed to other families, he did not necessarily want for his own.
Apparently Jobs was not alone.
It appears that a growing number of high-tech executives take measures to limit the amount of exposure their children have to the technology they produce, design and market. These concerned parents cite the new technology’s overwhelming attraction and addiction as factors in their decisions.
One example of this trend is found at a Silicon Valley elementary school. According to a 2011 New York Times story on the trend, many engineers and executives from high profile tech companies like Apple, eBay, Google, Hewlett-Packard, and Yahoo send their children to a Waldorf elementary school in Los Altos, California, where television viewing is discouraged and electronic devices are banned. They claim such radical educational measures are necessary to ensure their children develop all their talents without unnecessary distractions.
Such “radical” measures are really not that radical. In fact, parents need not send their children to expensive private schools to allow their own children the same privileges as their counterparts in Los Altos.
All parents need to do is let their children be children. Children need to grow up being children with all the interacting, creativity and spontaneity that has always been part of a healthy childhood. They need to do things like play games, eat together as a family and solve problems together.
The real radicals are those who allow their children to be electronically sequestered and tethered to their little devices and thus never encountering the real world. If there is any doubt about this, all one needs to do is ask the experts. Steve Jobs would agree. ~John Horvat II

Reflection of the Week
The gem cannot be polished
without friction,
nor man perfected without trials.
Out of the Trap
The Venus flytrap was first discovered in a small area of sandy wetlands not far from our home in North Carolina. These plants are fascinating to watch because they’re carnivorous.
Venus flytraps release a sweet-smelling nectar into colorful traps that resemble open flowers. When an insect crawls inside, triggering sensors along the outer rim, the trap clamps shut in less than a second—capturing its victim. The trap then closes further and emits enzymes that consume its prey over time, giving the plant nutrients not provided by the sandy soil. God’s Word tells of another trap that can capture unexpectedly. The apostle Paul warned his protégé Timothy: “Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction.” And “some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs” (1 Timothy 6:9–10).
Money and material things may promise happiness, but when they take first place in our lives, we walk on dangerous ground. We avoid this trap by living with thankful, humble hearts focused on God’s goodness to us through Jesus: “godliness with contentment is great gain” (v. 6).
The temporary things of this world never satisfy like God can. True, lasting contentment is found only through our relationship with Him. ~James Banks

Laughter, THE BEST MEDICINE
Pearly Gates
A minister dies and is waiting in line at the Pearly Gates.
Ahead of him is a guy who's dressed in sunglasses, a loud shirt, leather jacket, and jeans.
Saint Peter addresses this guy, "Who are you, so that I may know whether or not to admit you to the Kingdom of Heaven?"
The guy replies, "I'm Joe Cohen, taxi driver, of Noo Yawk City."
St. Peter consults his list. He smiles and says to the taxi driver, "Take this silken robe and golden staff and enter the Kingdom of Heaven."
The taxi driver goes into Heaven with his robe and staff, and it's the minister's turn.
He stands erect and booms out, "I am Joseph Snow, pastor of Calvary for the last forty-three years."
St Peter consults his list. He says to the minister, "Take this cotton robe and wooden staff and enter the Kingdom of Heaven."
"Just a minute," says the minister. "That man was a taxi driver, and he gets a silken robe and golden staff. How can this be?"
"Up here, we work by results," says Saint Peter. "While you preached, people slept; while he drove, people prayed."

Saint Joseph School is currently enrolling for the 2020/2021 school year
Every window in our school has a heart in it! All of us at SJS are sending our love and support to our students, parents, church, community and all essential workers! Thank you so much for all of the love and support that you are sending to us! We can't wait to all be together again! Take a drive by our school and feel the love!
A Grade 3 Thank You to Fr. Ron Barker:
Grade 3 children are so thankful to Fr. Ron Barker! On Ash Wednesday, Fr. Ron gave each third grade child a beautiful chapter book titled, The Adventures of Nick and Sam: Trouble With Lent by Paul McCusker. Mrs. Ellis saw this as a wonderful opportunity to combine Religion and Reading by assigning a long-term book report project that would be due on Holy Thursday. Each child was given a detailed book report form with suggestions for budgeting time so the reports could be given to Fr. Ron as a surprise by each student on Holy Thursday. We had our own “Trouble With Lent” this year that came in the form of COVID-19, and the school closed temporarily beginning March 13, 2020! However, we began distance-learning and zoom classes immediately on Monday, March 16, 2020 so each student was able to continue with this wonderful story and sent their book reports to Mrs. Ellis by email. Our Holy Thursday Zoom class was spent reviewing the book reports and discussing the main idea of the story that in life we are all faced with temptations every day that we can overcome through prayer and our personal relationship with Jesus. Fr. Ron Barker emphasizes that there are two “T’s” that we should each focus on. 1. Thanksgiving and 2. Trust. We should be thankful to the Lord for His gift of life and salvation and we should trust in God to be with us every step of the way because He loves us and He wants to be our friend. Thank you to Fr. Ron Barker for the wonderful gift!
